“Not much has changed”
Reviewed March 19, 2012

Returning to the beautiful island of Tortola we checked out Long Bay to see if any changes have been made. The shop I spoke about last year still exists but has a new owner - the hotel. The inventory is not as stocked as before and the store longer sells any food for purchase so that villa rentals cannot buy anything for their kitchens. Did learn however why the same employees still work there. Natives of Tortola have first position on any job even if another person from a different island is more qualified. So therefore job security no matter how nasty they are. We went on a day sail and had to wait for another couple that we didn't know that was going as well. They were staying at Long Bay and the resort forgot to get them their taxi! They did not like staying there. The Foder's says there is a mini golf course at Long Bay and their kids were looking forward to it. It doesn't exist - just ratty grass that chickens and roosters occupy. We had a burger at the pool bar (good news, they are very good), same crabby lady and the pool was quite full. Come to find out after chatting with some of the folks that NONE of them were staying at Long Bay. One was a charter captain that lived in the hills, some natives with their kids, a couple from a cruise ship and a family from Sebastian villas. Also, someone fell off a villa balcony and died and that was under tight lip. We saw they had a band down at the beach restaurant. Called the hotel, she gave us the time he was playing. Got there and no one was there! It's really too bad as the beach is the best on the island but nothing is ever going to change. Frenchman's Cay just reopened and the restaurant was awesome as was Banana Keet and Sebastians. So the excuse it's island way is not the case. Poor management. Needs overhaul of useless employees.

Room Tip: Wouldn't stay here - place is tired - needs upgrading.

Stayed here from 3/7/12/to 3/12/12 and had a nice stay. Rooms were comfy and convenient. Toilet leaked and maintenance had it fixed in 5 minutes after call to desk. Staff was friendly also. Nothing over the top fancy about Long Bay but it has an excellent loctaion and beach, though rather rocky in the water.

We went here for a destination wedding and had a great time. Every room has a view of the ocean and it's truly a tropical getaway. My best advice is to get with a group of people and charter a boat - it is the best way to see the best of the islands! I read some reviews about the rooms being dirty or with bugs...found this to be untrue. The only bugs in the room came in when I left the door open!

My husband and I stayed at Long Bay prior to a business stay on Peter Island. We stayed in a beachfront cabana, and the location is amazing. You are right on the beach and the view is so beautiful. The location itself is well worth staying here. The floor outside the shower was soft from water getting out of the shower area but overall the room was clean and very nice for the price. We actually thought our stay at Long Bay was more relaxing and enjoyable than Peter Island.
I had contacted the resort prior to our arrival to set up dinner reservations and a island tour. They were very quick to respond and did a great job setting up my requests. Everything was all set up when we arrived. They had no problem customizing a tour to meet our requests. Eric was our guide for our tour and he is the best. He gave us so much information of the island and we had many stops to shop and sight see. He made the tour so much fun. I highly recommend him and this tour.
We thought the service was good at this resort, they don't wait on you hand and foot but if you look at you server they come right over and get what you need. If was so much better than the service we received on Peter Island. They were VERY nice and helpful all the time. We had breakfast and dinner at 1748 and thought the food was very good.

The concierge set up our reservation at Sebastian's seaside grill. Our table was right on the rail overlooking the beach, beautiful sunset. We had the lobster which was cooked to perfection, and after dinner you get a shot of their rum. We bought a bottle because it is so good.
This was one of our most relaxing trips ever and if we travel to Tortola again we will be staying at Long Bay in the Beachfront Cabana

Room Tip: The beachfront cabanas are raised and have an unobstructed view of the ocean. Some of the lower delu...

We just returned from a weeklong trip to the Long Bay resort on Tortola. When selecting our hotel we really studied these trip advisor reviews, so its only right to pay it forward so to speak!
Overall, we really had a fantastic time. The resort really delivers in regards to beachfront location, on Long Bay which is really once of the nicest and most pristine beaches on the West End of Tortola. Our room was literally steps from the water and sand, we could enjoy a cocktail on our private terrace and watch the waves crash. Another perk of the resort was the pool. I noticed that not many people commented on really how large and nicely landscaped the pool and surrounding areas are. Mostly we prefer to swim in the ocean, but the pool was really nicer than I expected. The swim up pool bar was really convenient too, we enjoyed many painkillers and mahi sandwiches poolside for lunch :-) The bartender/ chef was a character- she was not the most outwardly friendly, but I didnt mind so much. Her attitude reminded me of a diner waitress, kind of a "what'll ya have" sort of treatment.

However, the room itself did leave some to be desired. The bathroom toilet area was like a tiny closet and in need of updating. The same with the shower, although large it had a old shower head and actually there was no door or curtain on the shower. So basically you are showering out in the open kind of behind a wall. The bathroom area did have two slatted doors you could close but it did seem odd. The TV in the room had terrible reception and we only got a handful of channels. We probably could have complained but we didnt mind, we didnt want to watch too much TV anyway. The room also had a small bar sink and fridge, which was good for storing water and drinks.

I also enjoyed a massage in the spa- its a very small little spa but the massage was good and reasonably priced. It did not have sauna/ steam rooms etc- so I would say it was pretty basic.

While traveling we really enjoy eating at the local restaurants. We had breakfast daily at the hotel which was sufficient- nothing fantastic, except the dining area is on the beach which was nice. We had dinner one night at the "Pasta House" they have on site, it was nothing too memorable. We had much better meals all around the west side of the island- Jolly Roger, Sugar Mill and drinks at Bananakeet were great.

We are a couple in our early 30's and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the resort- for the most part the other guests I would say ranged from 40's- 70's. It really is not a "party" atmosphere so to speak- not like an adult all-inclusive vibe. We enjoyed that it was quiet and tranquil, and could have drinks at the hotel pool and listen to the reggae music. We also did not see many children on the resort.

Customer service was fine- we found ourselves a little frustrated that the Concierge service was not really in place, usually at hotels you hope the Concierge can give you some real details about the restaurants in the area, usually we were met with little information.

Taxi's get very expensive on the island. You really cannot walk to many restaurants from the hotel, so be prepared to spend at least $20 every time you take a ride. We rented a car for one of the days to explore the island, which was great. The roads are windy and narrow but it wasnt a problem. When we go back we would probably rent a car for a longer period of time. Road Town is pretty far away and would have been a $60 cab ride (!) So we passed on that.

Overall, I have high marks for Long Bay Resort. I think its important to stress, this is not a posh, luxury style resort, like the Ritz Carlton for example. They do not have waitress service for drinks on the beach, or go that extra mile in regards to customer service. Dining options are not fancy, its a more casual vibe. As I mentioned, the room was in need of some modernization, but it was clean and adequate for us. The real beauty of the resort is the location, that beach is amazing!

After reading some of the reviews, we decided to select Long Bay for our honeymoon, and the experience was memorable, pleasant and we are making plans to return! The staff was very amicable! Upon arriving, they welcomed us withcold towels and rum punch! The Hillside deluxe room had a beautiful view! The room was clean, neat and very very nice! The beach is clean, clear and very romantic! We were able to take Speedys ferry to visit Virgin Gorda, took a day sail with White Squall II, took ferry to Jost Van Dyke, shopped at Road Town, tried local rum at Pussers, and had breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant 1748! This place is beautiful and we highly recommend it! The staff as a whole was the best always ready to help and did it with a smile. The standout on the staff was Vernon, one of the managers. A genuinely nice guy and always willing to help. We definately feel the resort is better because of him and will continue to improve. Thank you Vernon for everything!! Note: during high season, taxifares are quite expensive so renting a car would definately be a good thing.

Room Tip: Hillside Deluxe rooms have wonderful views. It does involve some uphill walking but the views are w...

We stayed at a beach side cabana this time. The front of the cabana has a balcony that faces right on the beach. You can lie in bed and watch the waves. Its a fantastic mesmerising spot.
The down side of these expensive rooms are the bathrooms. The back of the cabana house a sort of bathroom which is awful for the price of the room. The toilet flapper didnt work and there was some leaking from the tank. Wetf loors. The bathrooms in all the cabanas are sub standard. Disappointing but manageble due to the fabulous spot.
They also demanded full payment when I booked the room. Something I havent seen in a while.
