My husband and I wanted to experience something different instead of always going to an All Inclusive setting. The planning of this trip started last March. We hadn’t visited Tortola before and thought it might be a fun adventure for New Years 2014. We took a ferry from Red Hook, St. Thomas, on December 30th, 2013. Wear your ear plugs for the Native Son ferry! The noise of the boat was deafening. Going through Tortola Immigration was pleasant and friendly. The taxi ride to the Sugar Mill Hotel cost $15.00 each. We were greeted by Abiola, the Concierge, who made us feel welcome. Our room 105 was wonderful; large balcony overlooking the roof tops of the pool area, sitting area and kitchenette, very comfortable King size bed, two basin, bathroom sink and a large outside shower with plenty of hot water, internet in the room and a TV. We secured the 7 Night Adventure Package which was excellent for its variety of choice: 7 nights in a Deluxe Studio, Dolphin Royal Swim which we exchanged for an evening dinner since the swim did not appeal to us, 6 day vehicle rental which was excellent (National Car Rental, a new Daihatsu vehicle), 4 gourmet dinners, gourmet picnic for two, full day sail to Virgin Gorda, The Baths, autographed copy of the proprietor’s cook book, “The Sugar Mill Caribbean Cookbook,” and a bottle of Sugar Mill Rum. The highlight of this hotel was their evening meals. The food was always delicious, with a lot of variety, served hot by a very friendly staff. We have to recommend the filet mignon. It was the best! A car rental is a must because the taxis are very expensive. Driving on the left was easier the second week in Tortola than our first week in St. Thomas. Tortola offers many day trips to neighbouring islands by the local ferry or catamaran.
If you arrive before Monday night, the hotel hosts a get together so you can meet the other guests. It is a lovely way to meet everyone.
Just a heads up, for people affected by the insects in the tropics. Tortola has had an unusual amount of rain like the other Virgin Islands and mosquitos abound everywhere. I stongly suggest you bring bug spray and especially, After Bite medication. The hotel had provided some under the bathroom sink which I discovered much later so to be on the safe side, bring at least one spray and definitely the anti itch cream.
In conclusion, for rest, relaxation and meeting fellow guests, although quite expensive, this is the place to be.

Room Tip: When choosing the Deluxe Pool Suites, try to get Rooms 104 or 103. Our room, 105, was nice but you w...

This is a very cute hotel on the North Shore of Tortola. Although the beach is basically non-existent, it is close to the beautiful Cane Bay (10 mins). It's about 30 minute drive to Road Town and about 5 minutes from WestEnd. It is not luxurious...but Tortola is not luxurious so if that's what you're looking for I suggest another island. It is cute and clean and we had a nice view from our room. There are not tons of staff on hand - you do everything down in the restaurant - but we found the staff to be helpful (they made us a late night snack after we had a bad dinner experience somewhere else...even included a slice of cheesecake with our sandwhich!). The restaurant is very pretty and atmospheric and worth having dinner there one night. I found the food good but not great. Next time we are back in Tortola, we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 122 had a nice balcony and view of Jost Van Dyke...no road noise that I see others have complai...

My wife & I desired a relaxing Christmas break away from all the hustle & bustle of this over commercialized holiday. When we booked by phone we just sensed we would enjoy our stay form the friendliness of Amanda & Abiola; we were not disappointed. What an ideal spot the Sugar Mill turned out to be. After a warm welcome we were escorted to our room at the top of the drive that had beautiful views across to Jost Van Dyke. These were improved early during the stay when the gardener trimmed the bushes as he told us "especially for you". The large room had all the amenities we needed and house keeping did an exceptional job, quite discreetly & often while we were at breakfast. All the staff were courteous, friendly and professional. We received good advice on trips to take and ones we chose were arranged efficiently. The ambiance in the dining room, the converted part of the mill, just has to be experienced and the restaurant deserves a separate review. OK so the beach area is a little small and "yes" a road separates the hotel from the beach but this does little to detract from this delightful boutique hotel.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Sugar Mill Hotel in Tortola, which has large, pleasant rooms, nice bathrooms, outdoor showers, and an excellent restaurant. To top it off the staff were friendly and welcoming. The only reason I'm not rating it as Excellent is that the beach area was smaller than I would have liked, and despite there being a bar by the pool, it was unoccupied there was not really any service readily available for daytime snacks or food without walking down to the beach restaurant.

Let me say in starting that we never...let me repeat, NEVER go to the same resort a second time, much less again the following year. Now I get to eat my words!
We stayed at the Sugar Mill last December. I wrote a glowing review. And we just got back from our second visit! And, to top it off, I need to write an even more glowing review. They say you can't go back; well, they're wrong, at least about this place. Even most of the staff are the same: Amanda in the business office and Abiola and Theresa at the restaurant area front desk (and would you believe, they remembered us!) all totally pleasant and wonderful to chat with. They were more up on the news, so we depended on them to tell us it was snowing back home.
We had a different room this time, but it was as lovely as the one last year, beautifully maintained and spotless. The bathroom had a large vanity with two sinks, and a large tiled shower; the towels were large and fluffy, and every day we had fresh "beach" towels to take on our travels. We have NEVER been to a hotel where the rooms looked exactly like the pictures in the advertising brochure, but here, what you see in the photo really exists!
The restaurant deserves all the praise it gets. The chef is creative, and every meal is first class. The wine list is extensive, and there are enough moderately priced bottles to balance the higher ones. The setting is romantic and elegant, perfect for a special evening.
Can I praise this place enough? I don't think so. I just hope we get the opportunity to visit again.

We were upgraded to a pool suite and it was perfect, especially the outdoor stone shower! Immaculately clean, lovely staff, a very well run small hotel. Our idea of a perfect spot. The dining was great, loved lunch at the beachside restaurant! Dinner at the actual sugar mill was a real treat, tasty, charming and again, great service. The beach was fine and more great ones down the street for variety. The hotel's landscaping was lovely, My interaction with the reservation staff was very positive. We are looking forward to returning, what a gem!

Room Tip: Loved the pool suite, great space, privacy.

We stayed at the Sugar Mill in late October 2013 and despite the fact that it rained every single day, we still enjoyed ourselves and even ventured into the water to snorkel right off the hotel. The snorkeling is the best there, but it was fun and the water was gloriously war.

The cottages are clean and spacious with big bathrooms and free wi-fi. Ours had a view of the beach right from our bed! Staff are super friendly and will accommodate your every wish.

The hotel restaurant is very good with some really friendly waiters. Try the fish tacos at the beach restaurant.

Room Tip: Do not go to the BVI in October/November. It's the rainy season!
