My husband and I wanted to experience something different instead of always going to an All Inclusive setting. The planning of this trip started last March. We hadn’t visited Tortola before and thought it might be a fun adventure for New Years 2014. We took a ferry from Red Hook, St. Thomas, on December 30th, 2013. Wear your ear plugs for the Native Son ferry! The noise of the boat was deafening. Going through Tortola Immigration was pleasant and friendly. The taxi ride to the Sugar Mill Hotel cost $15.00 each. We were greeted by Abiola, the Concierge, who made us feel welcome. Our room 105 was wonderful; large balcony overlooking the roof tops of the pool area, sitting area and kitchenette, very comfortable King size bed, two basin, bathroom sink and a large outside shower with plenty of hot water, internet in the room and a TV. We secured the 7 Night Adventure Package which was excellent for its variety of choice: 7 nights in a Deluxe Studio, Dolphin Royal Swim which we exchanged for an evening dinner since the swim did not appeal to us, 6 day vehicle rental which was excellent (National Car Rental, a new Daihatsu vehicle), 4 gourmet dinners, gourmet picnic for two, full day sail to Virgin Gorda, The Baths, autographed copy of the proprietor’s cook book, “The Sugar Mill Caribbean Cookbook,” and a bottle of Sugar Mill Rum. The highlight of this hotel was their evening meals. The food was always delicious, with a lot of variety, served hot by a very friendly staff. We have to recommend the filet mignon. It was the best! A car rental is a must because the taxis are very expensive. Driving on the left was easier the second week in Tortola than our first week in St. Thomas. Tortola offers many day trips to neighbouring islands by the local ferry or catamaran.
If you arrive before Monday night, the hotel hosts a get together so you can meet the other guests. It is a lovely way to meet everyone.
Just a heads up, for people affected by the insects in the tropics. Tortola has had an unusual amount of rain like the other Virgin Islands and mosquitos abound everywhere. I stongly suggest you bring bug spray and especially, After Bite medication. The hotel had provided some under the bathroom sink which I discovered much later so to be on the safe side, bring at least one spray and definitely the anti itch cream.
In conclusion, for rest, relaxation and meeting fellow guests, although quite expensive, this is the place to be.
