We are a family of four (17 & 15 yr old boys) and stayed 4 nights using the hotel's "Great Escape" package which included a good quality car. The upper floor of the Plantation Suite is two interconnecting rooms which were ideal for our family.

We emailed the hotel a number of times before the stay with questions, and always received prompt and helpful responses - and when we were there, we encountered the same level of service throughout. The Sugar Mill is very well managed, and run and staffed by people who obviously care about what they do, and intend to carry on doing it well. Overall we had a wonderfully relaxing time, and would recommend the place without hesitation.

The rental vehicles recommended by the Sugar Mill (through National) are good condition (ours was brand new) and good for getting up the steepest roads! Driving is easy, as traffic is light. Taxis are ridiculously expensive in the BVI (charge is per person, not for the journey), so a return taxi fare to anywhere can cost about the same as a days rental! The hotel will help sort out everything, whether you want taxis, rental, and anything else (eg diving)..

The hotel is relaxing, peaceful and quiet (not stuffy). That suited us, and our boys, who (after a week of sailing school) were chilled out. My view is that you could take small children there too, but Sugar Mill is not where I'd head with boisterous or lively kids looking for constant entertainment/action. That's not a criticism, it's just a personal viewpoint as a parent who plans family holidays.

We ate lunch at the beach bar twice. It was great - good food, fair prices, lovely drinks, friendly staff. The only pity is that it didn't carry on offering a drinks service all afternoon; it can get quite hot lying on a sunbed and swimming! We also enjoyed dinner twice at the restaurant. The food was very good, and we really appreciated the iced water. A bit of a struggle one night to get pudding due to a large birthday group, but overall we found it (like everything about the hotel) well run, and a class act. For breakfast we always headed out (try the North Shore Shell Museum!)

I've too many other reviews to write after a great holiday, so please message me if you have any specific questions about the Sugar Mill.

Overall a wonderful place. It's not cutting edge boutique style, just high quality, and treating its customers and itself with respect.

For eighteen years we have enjoyed the delights that come with staying at the Sugar Mill. If my heart could design its own special place, this would be it -- hidden away in lush tropical gardens, quiet but for bird songs and wind rustling palm fronds. The rooms are beautifully appointed and kept immaculate by staff who take pride in working there. Some we met on our first stay, and each year we look forward to renewing our friendship with them long before we get there. You can see the look of contentment, a look that says 'I have found my place and I don't want to leave' on the faces of fellow guests. We have hosted sailing friends, celebrated life's milestones, and attended a wedding of two guests, at the Sugar Mill. Whatever your heart desires in an impromptu event, or something planned, all levels of staff, right up to owners Jeff and Jinx Morgan, will make sure that your every wish will come true.

Room Tip: We have stayed in deluxe hilltop rooms and suites by the pool. Lately we've become addicted to R...

My husband and I stayed 5 nights and had a wonderful, relaxing stay. The staff was friendly and accommodating, the grounds were beautiful and the food at the restaurant was delicious. We liked the location because we were close to other restaurants and beaches (Long Bay). We stayed in a pool suite and had a fabulous view. In addition to the Sugar Mill restaurant, Bananakeet is a must. We also enjoyed the lovely sunset at Sebastian's on the Beach, and of course Margarita Monday at Myetts in Cane Garden Bay. We used Taxis since we like our Painkillers, but all could have been easily driven to. My only complaint is that we were not there during Full Moon and could have walked to Bomba Shack- but that' was poor planning on our part ; ) We hope to return soon!

Room Tip: The pool suites have great views, are away from the street (and car traffic), have a/c and a TV.

Sugar Mill Hotel is a place worth visiting and revisiting! We stayed for five nights in a pool suite (103) and would highly recommend it. The view is great from the front deck and the suite was the perfect size. We had a separate sitting area and kitchenette, but the highlight was the outdoor rock-walled shower! The staff is friendly and quick to attend to any requests--to help with reservations or to make recommendations on sightseeing. The restaurant is truly outstanding! We had a special Celebration package which included some free meals, a gourmet picnic lunch, a bottle of champagne and a rental car for three days. The package was well worth it; if it's available it's worth consideration. The Sugar Mill is small and little out of the way, but we enjoyed the opportunity to get to know other guests. We're already looking forward to a return trip. The owners, Jinx and Jefferson (who we were able to meet at a Monday evening pool cocktail party), have done a marvelous job!

Just returned from the BVI - Tortola. We spent 6 nights at the Sugar Mill Hotel in
Little Apple Bay. Our room was very nice with a great view of the ocean. It had a comfortable bed with mosquito netting, a small living area with a tv, efficient kitchenette with a small sink, toaster, coffee maker, and small refrigerator. The outdoor shower was unique and was made of rock.
The star of this hotel is the restaurant. We had dinner all but one evening in the restaurant. Every meal was simply delicious. The chefs are just amazing and their talents come through with every entree. The ambiance is superb. It was warm and inviting as well as romantic. The prices are above average but well worth it. The service that we received was very good. We went off site to another recommended restaurant and were disappointed. The cost of our meals were the same but the quality didn't compare to Sugar Mill. We also enjoyed breakfast each morning. The rum French toast and apple French toast are very tasty. Be aware that breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. We recommended to the manager that the restaurant open the coffee bar at 7:00 so guests could enjoy the beautiful view from the breakfast area. Lunch is also served at the beach which is across the street but very close. The beach is small but sufficient. If you get a chance take a ferry to Virgin Gorda to see the Baths. You will be amazed at the view and rock formations in the ocean.
Note: Abi, Chermaine and Clifford were exceptional staff members.

Room Tip: This is not a hotel for children under 18. Get a pool suite if possible for the view.

Just spent 3 nights/4 days at the fabulous Sugar Mill Resort. What a fantastic little resort. It has a relaxed, low key vibe - perfect place to 'get away' from it all and enjoy the simple things of life. That being said - don't think for a minute that the staff aren't attentive to your every need - they're amazing - from the maid service who kept our rooms impeccable; the breakfast crew who always gave us a great greeting and smile to start out the day to the evening staff who provided excellent service in the restaurant. Annette ran the front desk in the morning - she was very helpful in scheduling our activities during the day and Sharon was simply one of the most helpful, knowledgeable and friendly hotel manager i believe i've met. She is the consumate professional and sets the tone and example for the rest of the staff on property.
This was our first stay at Sugar Mill and we took advantage of the "Celebration Package" - including 1 dinner; 2 breakfasts, a bottle of Champagne and an amazing picnic that my wife and I took to one of the beaches on a day trip. We'd read so much about the pool side suites that we were initially disappointed when they were all booked for the time period we were staying - so we ended up in one of the 'standard rooms'......we loved it!! Suite 112 - the views are amazing and best of all - no one can see up into the room from the rest of the resort - so you have great privacy (unless you choose to stand right in front of the screen door or out on the balcony!!)
Breakfasts were delicious - wide menu range - catering to traditional US & British b'fasts, with plenty of healthy options available as well. Dinners were off the charts delicious and the variety of food was exceptional - with a Vegetarin option at each meal. The prices are a little on the expensive side - $25-$40 for an entree - but the portions are generous and the taste is divine!!
We rented a car thru National (part of the package) and boy are we thankful we did. You definitely want to get out and see some of the other beaches on the island and you'll either need to rent a taxi or drive yourself. My wife and i like our independence - so we chose to drive. If you are a timid driver - you may want to consider a taxi!! i've driven in alot of countries around the world (europe; middle east; australia; africe; north america) - but this is one of the most unique....and exciting experiences ever. Tortola is very hilly and mountainous - roads are narrow (sometimes a road literally looks like it's a driveway) and when you're going up and down the mountains, they have alot of 'switchbacks', with major hairpin turns - but so long as you take it easy and don't feel like you have to compete in the Indy 500 - you'll do great.....and you'll have alot of fun. The views from the hills and moutains are just off the charts amazing - it's no surprise to me that people come here for vacation and decide to skip the rat race and move here for good!!
Smugglers Cove is a great beach to visit (we took our picnic there and had an amazing day) - some days you're the only person on the beach and other days it can be a little more crowded - also has some reefs off to the side to snorkle around; Cane Garden Bay is another great beach - much more popular - lots of charter yachts pull in there and anchor for the day. There's also a number of restaurants and bars right on the beach - so plenty of cocktailing!! Brewers Bay is also another great little spot to visit. All of the beaches are beautiful - but our favourites were brewers and smugglers. If you like to get a little exercise - get some beautiful views and get a little exercise - then take the trip to Mount Sage National Park. There is a wonderful lookout point near the summit that gives you spectacular view of the area. One of the unexpected surprises of our trip happened at the National Park. Next to the parking lot, at the park entrance, there is a small gift shop/snack bar restaurant. It's nothing to look at - looks sort of run down - but the owner of the place is a very helpful, friendly bloke named Jim. After a couple of hours hiking thru the park, my wife and i enjoyed a bananna smoothie at his store. He then told us that he also serves dinners. My gut reaction was no bloody way!! didn't look like a restaurant and the place looked like a 'dive' - but then he showed us the menu and we decided to take a punt. When we arrived that evening - we were the only people at the restaurant - which made me feel a little uneasy at first.....Turns out - this is what Jim does. Cooks for 2-4 people a night - makes it very personal and the food was fantastic. There's no atmosphere at all - but a wonderful, friendly, gracious host and delicious food. Final suggestion - visit Bananna Keet restaurant right before sundown. The food is good (not even close to Sugar Mill, but prices are similar), but the view is 'off the charts'. We ate dinner there one night and then another night we had drinks at sunset and then went to dinner at Sugar Mill. Sorry for the long review - but this has been a tremendous 4 days - felt the need to share!! Can't wait to get back here again and the Sugar Mill will be where we stay!!

Room Tip: If choosing the regular rooms - choose a 2nd floor room. Room 112 had fantastic views and great pri...

The Sugar Mill is a lovely little place on Tortola. A long cab ride from the airport or ferry dock, but it is nicely situation on a beautiful little beach in Apple Bay where the swimming is great when the water is calm. Staff is fun and friendly - special kudos to Amanda, who helped my husband charter a sailboat at the last minute and never lost her patience with all the back and forth required. The room was comfortable with a nice view to watch the sunset on the balcony, but the main reason to come to Sugar Mill is for the FOOD! Breakfast has lots of delicious options, lunch on the little restaurant right on the beach is delicious and very affordable, and the hotel restaurant for dinner is some of the best cuisine I have ever had ANYWHERE. Definitely worth every penny. You will not go away hungry or disappointed! The views from both the breakfast porch and the lunch shack are lovely, and the Sugar Mill's dinner restaurant is gorgeous no matter where you sit. Drinks are made generously (I actually had to ask for them to go easy on the rum at one point because I'm not much of a liquor drinker) and if you want the ultimate girly island drink, make sure to try the mango/coconut cream concoction before you go - heaven in a glass! A lovely place to stay with food thatcan't be beat for any meal!
P.S. there are some fun little bars within walking distance, if you're up for a stroll!
