We celebrated my husband's birthday at the Sugar Mill with our two children. The entire family had a wonderful time. The service was exemplary from check-in to check-out, and we have absolutely nothing but wonderful things to say about the staff, the restaurant, and the room. We live on another Caribbean island across the channel and have stayed at many inns and hotels in the British and US Virgin Islands, and can say without hesitation that our best experience was our stay at TSM. I have never posted anything on Trip Advisor before, and our stay was over six months ago, but I felt compelled to post this review because the staff makes such an effort, far and above that of much pricier hotels in our region.

We treat this hotel as our home away from home: Or as our extended family.

This is a 5 star hotel.

Location and views are great. We are watercolorists and love to paint the scenes from our room, a private beach, total relaxation and a staff as friendly as your local postman.

. We have not even mentioned the first class restaurant and bar to delight and satisfy the most selective tongue.

We have returned there 5 times and after travelling throughout Europe for many years, the Sugar MIll Hotel is still the top choice of our family.

A visit to BVI and the Sugar Mill is a trip to be remembered

Sincerely
The Brights

To start, my wife and I are hardcore "foodies" from the big city and have vacationed and lived in the Caribbean for many years. We found the Sugar Mill to be a splendid example of Caribbean hospitality. It was a pleasure to meet Jinx Morgan ( proprietor and owner) on New Years Eve and compliment her on her beautiful watercolors. The cuisine at the Sugar Mill is the finest the islands have to offer ( even better than St. Barts) I could not believe how gr8 the filet mignon was. The beach is pretty much non-existent but a short drive down the road and you'll find Smuggler's Cove and realize your in heaven. A truly gr8 value for the price and a true GEM of not only Tortola but the entire Caribbean!!

Normally I wouldn't rate this 5 stars. However, being the Caribbean, it's definitely a 5 for Tortola. I searched relentlessly for a nice, clean, comftorable hotel to stay for the 3 days prior to our bareboat charter with TMM. I looked in great detail at all of them prior to the trip and during and was very satisfied with the decision.

We stayed in The Cottage which was very nice. For the price, which it was the priciest of all the rooms, I would have hoped for a better view from the room. We looked out over a small parking area, then towards the hotel restaurant, then could finally see some blue ocean and a slice of Jost Van Dyke. I wasn't too concerned with this since we were going bareboating for 10 days and would have the best views imaginable. If I was land based for the trip and stayed in this room I would not have shrugged this element off so quickly, too much engine noise, restauarant noise, and literally right next to the pool. We did not use the pool. It was nice, but as stated it was right next to the room and there were some very rowdy kids here during the stay. That made for some rather unenjoyable afternoon naps and periods of relaxing. The welcome bottle of rum was a nice touch. One complaint was the lack of places to hang wet things such as towels, bathing suits. It was just very strange that there were no hooks or anything, especially in the Cottage which had an outdoor shower.

The beach is very small and isolated, but we liked that aspect very much - made it very relaxing. Beautiful water, beautiful view.

3 restaurants - very nice.

The beach restaurant, was nice, maybe a little pricey for lunch but we weren't too concerned with the price due to the view we were getting. One day we split a lunch meal, sandwich I think, and was more than enough for the 2 of us.

The main restaurant was also very nice. Again pricey, but worth it. The food was excellent. The service was not the friendliest; however, that seemed to be prevalant around Tortola. We recognized that early and accepted it. It wasn't that the people were rude by any means, just not too friendly, no smiles.

Breakfast restaurant had an excellent view. Never crowded. Decent food.

There is a nice little grocery store down the street at the hotel down by Bomba's Shack. I can't remember the name, but they stay open late and had excellent prices. Great place to fill up your fridge with drinks and snacks.

I could go on and on about details but it's getting depressing thinking about it, being here, instead of there - can't wait to go back.

Just returned from the BVI and felt compelled to pass on a wonderful memory. The Sugar Mill is a wonderful little hotel on the northwest side of Tortola, with views across the across the water to Jost Van Dyke I. From the moment you enter the property, to the smiles on the faces of the staff, to the great, West Indies inspired rooms - you can't find anything else like it. And, I didn't even talk about the restaurant yet - hats off to the chef and the restaurant staff!! Amazing and scrumptious. We'll be back!

this fall we spent two amazing weeks at the sugar mill hotel on tortola. it was absolutely wonderful!!! they say "a small hotel for a few special people"--I don't know how special we are but they certainly made us feel extraordinary. of course the setting is perfect caribbean, the beach, the grounds and the pool. the food is to die for, seriously. yet the most remarkable appeal is the staff--the women and men who are at the sugar mill are professional yet comfortable and helpful in everyway--beautiful, caring and very very lovely.

my husband and I have been going to british virgin islands for years and we cannot wait to return next year! a remarkable slice of perfection.

sincerely,

Just returned from a 2-week stay at The Sugar Mill Hotel on Tortola. It is a small, boutique property, in a spectacular location with fabulous views from everywhere. The entire staff is dedicated to your enjoyment, and you are made to feel more like a guest in a private home, than a tourist in a hotel. Our requests were invariably greeted with my favorite words, "no problem".
The Pool Suites have been recently remodeled, including a fabulous outdoor shower, and are the perfect accomodation.
The restaurant is one of the best fine dining establishments on the island, with sufficient variety on the menu to keep us 'dining in' several times during our stay.
