The chef at this terrific restaurant is a major league player. His cuisine ranks with the best that I have ever tasted and I have travelled a lot! He is an artist who lovingly plates his food. Do yourselves a favour: seek out this terrific spot and be glad you did!

On our last day in St. Maarten, we made the trip to Grand Case. Originally we were looking for The Fish Pot which had been recommended to us. Once we got there, we found out that it was closed. After attempting two other restaurants (one wasn't open for lunch, the other was doing a menu change that day and had only a limited selection for lunch), one of the restaurants recommended L'Effet Mer - and it turned out to be a great recommendation! L'Effet Mer is right on the water and the view is spectacular. Our waitress was fabulous and the food was terrific. Authentic French cuisine that was outstanding! And you know it's good when half of the restaurant is filled with police officers having lunch. We couldn't have been happier with this restaurant and highly recommend it. The trip to Grand Case is worth it!

We have been visiting St. Maarten since 1980, probably 20 times over the past 32 years. We love Grand Case where the French food is unbeatable. We usually just wander down the street and see which specials strike our fancy that evening. Tonight we had an extraordinary experience.

At L'Effet de Mer we had one of the best meals we have had in all our years here. The amuse bouche was a delicious mushroom soup with a small piece of a smoked fish. For an appetizer, I had a "tuna trio" which is like the marlin trio shown on the restaurant website. As a main course I had a brochette of sweetbreads and lobster tail with lobster tail and braised celery. Both were wonderful.

My wife had a marlin tartar and gnocchi with a half a lobster tail and ice cream for desert. That was a special and a real bargain for 26 Euros.

I highly recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant now occupies the former location of Le Ti Provencal - a busy spot, but definitely worth seeking out. The food is beyond exceptional - daily specials are particularly worthwhile, as they feature fresh fish imaginatively prepared and presented. It is very difficult to pick a "best" restaurant in Grand Case, because all are excellent and very, very different one from the other, but I would say that L'Effet Mer is absolutely essential for a visit from experienced and demanding diners. The service is highly professional and helpful, the wine list admirable, and the food amongst the best we have ever had in the Caribbean. Fish and seafood specialties are highly recommended. My husband considers this to be the best restaurant we visited on our trip and that is high praise indeed. The room is very simple, nothing special. Cuisine and service are tops.
