We celebrated my 50th birthday at one of the most amazing places I've visited in my travel career. Love the kitchenette, balcony and lovely appointed room. The breathtaking views are mezmerizing. The owners are amazing and know how to run a first class hotel. It's walking distance to Grand Case where there's a wide variety of restaurants. I've been in the travel industry for 30 yrs. and toured other properties. I was very happy to get back to our very own paradise. I would go back in a heartbeat. Kristin came to my rescue when I needed guidance and a great recommendation for a jewelry store for custom made jewelry. I had purchased from a different place but found Shiva's to be the best. I still have the lovely diamond ring I designed and they made. Do drive around the island and see the sights. Orient Beach is a great experience. You'll be happy to get back to the tranquility and beauty of L'Esplanade.

Run don't walk.

Room Tip: I believe all the rooms face the ocean but be sure to ask for one when making a reservation.

Beautiful hotel, friendly and helpful staff. I enjoyed the hotel immensely, watching the sun rise and set from the balcony or even inside the room was a dream. I highly recommend this hotel, the Grand Case Beach Club is a quick walk and you can enjoy their wonderful restaurants as well as walk thru town with ease. Grand Case is one of the friendlier towns on the island. Be careful of the drivers on the island, it is quite different than driving in the states, but nothing you can't adapt to. Just be prepared for quick stops and lots of random honking.

We were originally booked for eight nights at the Grand Case Beach Club but the day before we left, we were informed that due to a 'technical issue', we would be moved to the L'Esplanade for three nights, compliments of GCBC!

So this was not our first choice and it's because it's not on the beach. We have been in St. Martin 8 times and we have seen the hotel each time, but this was our first visit. The staff greeted us warmly and escorted us to a large room (Luxury 1 Bedroom is the description I think). The living and dining area was large and well decorated. The fold out couch for my daughter and her friend was, according to them, not very comfortable to sleep on but adequate. Our bedroom was large, with a firm and comfortable bed and more than enough drawer space.

The bathroom was also large, with plenty of room. There is a trend for the showers to lack doors so water is tracked or sprayed accidently, making for wet floors. L'Esplanade, Grand Case Beach Club and the place in Phillipsberg all lacked doors on the shower enclosure.

The entire suite had a balcony that gave us an incredible view of Ville de Grand Case and the bay area. It was very nice to sit there in the afternoon with a glass of wine and enjoy the breeze and view the surroundings.

L'Esplanade is on the side of a hill overlooking the Petit Plage part of Grand Case. The grounds are beautiful, with flowering bushes and trees and swaying palms.

If being on the beach is not as important to you as being in a pretty luxurious room, I highly recommend L'Esplanade. The staff are great, the rooms large and well kept and the views are fantastic. It's a short walk (about 10 minutes) to the beach at Grand Case Beach Club or 15 minutes into the town of Grand Case. However, being on a beach IS important to me, so while I enjoyed our stay, I would probably not stay again. However, I would recommend it.

We did notice some items that I would want addressed if I managed the hotel. The garden areas around the paths and the rooms are home to cats and the smell of cat poop was evident next to the stairs to our room (20). Also, mortar on some of the steps was crumbling, which could be a tripping hazard.

The only reason I didn't give this hotel a 5 star rating is that it isn't on the beach and the items in the previous paragraph.

Room Tip: I think all of the rooms have a great view, but those with a balcony looking over the town of Grand...

In March, on our way to Anguilla, we stayed three nights first at L’Esplanade on St. Martin.

We rented our car via Justice Car Rental, getting a nice SUV for a fair price, with good service, being picked up at the airport and dropped off at the marina. The car rental was arranged via the hotel. The hotel has a good parking space, and most likely you will be able to park your car outside/close to your apartment.

The hotel itself is fairly well described through the photos on their homepage as well as Tripadvisor.

We had an oversized loft on two floors. The rooms and toilets were clean; foremost the door and windowsills were outdated. It had two balconies, whilst the balcony on the upper floor was rather useless.

The kitchen was well equipped, having needed utensils for cooking, and pleasantly enough complimentary items in the fridge upon arrival. The room also had an iron and ironing board, as well as two TVs (one downstairs and one upstairs opposite to the bed). There was also an iPod/iPhone docking station with speakers, which was nice for listening to some music in the evenings, sipping a glass of wine on the balcony, before going out for dinner.

The location is great in terms of proximity to the restaurant row. We liked the restaurant Tastevin the most, for their food and their knowledge of wines. Restaurant Ocean82 was too hectic for us; not having the traditional Caribbean relaxed feeling. Seemed they were short on staff, as the service was very slow, and the waitresses were running around like crazy.

The less nice thing with L’Esplanade was the construction site above their premises on the hill, which was rather noise during weekdays. Probably this was temporary only.

The pool we did not end up using, as it had more of a “forest feeling” (which can of course also be nice, depending on your preference), but we prefer views of the sea and the sun.

An unpleasant experience was one morning when I went out jogging, when two rottweilers jumped me from behind, whilst still being in the hotel’s driveway (apparently the dogs were belonging to the owners of a house just next to the hotel). I love animals, but did feel rather uncomfortable with that incident.

The island (both the Dutch and the French side) accepted Euros at all the places we visited, except for the boat ride over to Pinel island.

The French side of the island was more quiet, and L’Esplanade was away from some of the terrible traffic jams and tourist crowds that you may encounter on St. Martin. The island is very different from Anguilla though, and not an island we would necessarily revisit, as we prefer more tranquility.

Beautiful room, comfortable beds. The service was great. We honeymooned after our wedding in Barbados. The hotel is set up atop a hill close to Restaurant Row.....very easy to walk to excellent restaurants. The pool is fantastic and the poolside bartender is the best. Make sure to swim up to a barstool and grab yourself a drink.

Our recent stay at L'Esplanade was certainly as memorable as the many before. We had just flow in from Jamaica and found St Martin as tranquil, and as restful as always. We generally try to travel during the shoulder season. We have found the area less hectic, the restaurants more available and the shop keepers more willing. We try to avoid hustle and bustle! L'Esplanade is one the the nicest boutique hotels that we visit in the Caribbean. The rooms are spacious, the bathrooms very generous, and we love the kitchenette set-up for small meal preparation. The staff, as another reviewer stated, is what makes the hotel. Patricia, Ana-Marie, Natalie, Philomene, Alain, all make the extra effort to keep their guests happy. You are always warmly greeted! The housekeeping staff, including my friend, Edith, is always so willing and helpful. The pool and spa area is relaxing and well-maintained. It is a short walk to the beach, and a short walk to the main street of Grand Case. This main street gives the visitor plenty of restaurant options. If you use cash, the exchange rate is 1 euro to the dollar! If you decide to stay at the hotel for lunch Alain can fix you up with some real treats, even fresh lobster right off the boat with advance notice. Try his Rendezvous Cocktail. There is always fresh flavored water, and coffee in the lobby, with wine offered during happy hour. A light continental breakfast of fresh croissants, french bread and juices can be ordered the night before. Delicious! We were delighted to have all our laundry washed, folded and returned the same day for $20.00. Philomene was even able to spot clean one of my tops! Exploring Marigot, driving around the island, checking out the many beaches is always high priority. If you want night life and casino action you can readily visit the Dutch side, far more accessible, now that the new bridge is finished. Since so many English speaking tourists visit, there is no real language barrier. The French side is far quieter, with much better restaurants than the Dutch side, although shopping is generally more plentiful and cheaper
with the Dutch. Just a few hints, remember that French shops close for a two hour break after lunch and watch out if you drive for the many motor cyclists who fly in and out of the traffic! Also, it is often easier to withdraw from an ATM on the Dutch side, one located right between the two countries. Bon Voyage! Have a great trip!

Room Tip: The suites are super and all have a great view!

The swaying of the palm trees sound like the breaking of waves. The pointy volcanic mountains in the background. Gorgeous tiles leading you up the stairs to your room. (And our bathroom was spacious and also beautifully tiled). A mysterious grassy foot path down to town surrounded by tropical foliage, including cactuses and tamarind. I love this hotel - we were there for my husband's 65th, complete with a bottle of champagne waiting for our arrival.

In Grand Caisse, don't miss Lolo's for their great ribs; L'Shambala for their beautiful beachside bar and elegant dining (the tartare of fish) and the crepe man's food truck on most evenings near the salt refinery sculpture.

Breakfast is one place only because you'll be hooked: Serafina's in Marigot; an authentic French patisserie with every fruit tart imaginable and custom cakes made from mousse and macarons.

Best nature walk is Orient Bay, past the nudist beach to Galeon, a beach where you can watch the natives play in the water, and refresh yourself with a shrimp salad at the little cafe on the beach, next to the windsurfing place.

Rent a car for $40/day - the hotel arranges everything.

Room Tip: Get the rooms on the top floor.
