I thought St Martin would be nothing but beaches. I was very mistaken. There is something for everyone here! Zip-line, hiking, beaches, FOOD...yes, I'm a foodie. And this was an excellent destination for my palate!

And this hotel is fabulous! Every detail perfect, the rooms elegantly casual and immaculate. All of the rooms have ocean view balconies. The suite in which we stayed was extremely comfortable and secure. Hotel L'Esplanade's architecture is a lovely melding of Italian and Spanish styles. The atmosphere and service are above what you would expect in the Caribbean. I am so glad we found this gem! Thank you all at L'Esplanade for a great week!

Room Tip: As far as I could tell, all of the room are good!

We stayed at the L’Esplanade in St. Martin (French side) from August 1-5, 2012. We also stayed at the Sonesta Maho Resort & Casino in St. Maarten (Dutch side) from July 27 to August 1, so also see that review.
L’Esplanade is located on a hill overlooking Grand Case on the ocean. It is a lovely, very quiet, small resort and all rooms overlook the ocean a short distance away. There is free internet, and satellite dish TV. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room was spacious with a large patio. The patio door also had a screen door, so in the early morning hours we could enjoy the fresh breeze. There is also a nice, private pool area that is relaxing.
To avoid having to drive down to Grand Case or walk along the roadside to get there, they have built a private walkway down to the edge of town. We took this each night when we went down to Grand case to eat.
Grand Case has a very long, nice beach, and the ocean was always calm. Grand case is full of various restaurants for lunch and dinner, but we only saw a few that served breakfast. No meals are served at L’Esplanade, but coffee is available all day long in the reception area. Coffee, Danish’s, etc. are available for breakfast, but you must turn in a form the previous evening to have them delivered to your room in the morning.
If you are looking for a quiet getaway, with great rooms and wonderful, relaxing views, I would highly recommend the L’Esplanade.

We stayed at L'Esplanade in low-season (July), first time in St. Martin; and kept wondering where everyone else was. The hotel is gorgeous, and so is the place, regardless of season.

Room-wise: The room, bathroom and kitchen are large and immaculate (all the sand we brought from the beach was cleared out daily), the staff is very helpful and friendly, the bed is comfortable, and the balcony-view quite awesome (beware of mosquitos, though the chairs are very comfortable). Beach towels provided, no hassle whatsoever.

Swim-wise: Even with a few rain-showers, the nearby beach (5 minute walk) was awesome -- great sand, crystal clear water -- all the way deep out one can see the bottom, warm and still; perfect swimming for beginners and advanced. Swim-wise, this little beach is on par with the best of the Greek-Isles and Maui; better than Playa. Swim-wise, Florida and Cape Cod can't hold a candle (no offense meant, to each their own). Given this observation, the beach was incredibly deserted. Oftentimes we were by ourselves. There are several other great beaches on this side of the island; however, the only one we'd trouble going to again is Anse Heureuse (Happy Bay) -- given how awesome the little beach by the hotel is. Again, speaking for swimmers.

Access-wise: Some may find going up and down the two flights of stairs tiresome, in particular after climbing up from the beach in the heat. We're reasonably fit, and still had to stop to catch our breath. Still, as long as our legs hold, we wouldn't stay anywhere else. We rented a car from U-Save at the Dutch-side airport -- for a song ($130 for a week or so), and it served us well. Not a looker, but great for beach-hopping. There is ample parking, and you don't need to climb the two flights with luggage -- that's only for going to the beach.

Food-wise: Some very nice restaurants next to the beach. If you get tired of fancy food (we did), there's a very large supermarket with French produce at the end of Rue L'Esperance, past the French airport, a 5 minute ride from L'Esplanade. Payment in USD and CC accepted. "French" supermarket means awesome range of sandwich and picnic materials (fresh baguettes, cold cuts, posh cheeses, pates, fruits etc etc), and a huge selection of inexpensive French wine and chocolate. Bless L'Esplanade, the kitchen comes with wine glasses and corkscrew. For those who'd rather not drive, there is a tiny convenience store in Grand Case -- milk etc.

Honeymoon material.

We really enjoyed our recent stay at L'Esplanade. The room was immaculate, the bed very comfortable, the view spectacular- and the staff very helpful! Although not on the beach, the view and setting make up for that. It's a very pleasant stroll into town in the evening to take advantage of the wide variety of restaurants. The pool is in a nice setting, but the view is somewhat obstructed by the foliage- we didn't come to the Caribbean for a pool however, so this really didn't matter to us. Over all, a very pleasant, and easy to recommend!

We normally stay at Le Petit, the sister hotel of L’Esplanade, but as this was closed for the few days we would be in St Martin, we decided to give the L’Esplanade a chance and to see if it was worthy of the No 1 Hotel on St Martin/Maarten ranking !

Prior to our arrival, Mrs FB2000 called the hotel to request two bottles of wine to be in our room upon arrival as the hotel does not have a bar or restaurant, and we were due to arrive in the evening. Happily, they were waiting for us when we got there, and as we were repeat visitors from Le Petit, one of the bottles was complementary.

Our room was equipped with very modern bathroom and kitchen areas, and nice views from the balcony ( the sea, the gardens, butterflies and the end of the Grand Case Airport runway ! ). The sunset view from the balcony was pretty spectacular as well. The bed was very comfortable.

One nice feature I regularly took advantage of was the iced orange water in reception, where free copies of the local daily newspaper were also available. A free coffee machine is also in reception, as is a PC for free internet usage ( I overheard a young couple reviewing the Grand Case restaurants on Tripadvisor ! ). Free unsecured WiFi was also available in our room.

The Swimming Pool is set in an attractive part of the gardens but is quite small. It would be fine if there were no other guests there, but unfortunately when we were there another couple were also trying to swim. However, whilst lying on a sun-lounger we did to see a large Green Iguana go for a drink from the toddler’s pool ! The swim-up bar was not operating but this was expected as this is only available in the peak months.

The walk down the hill to Grand Case only takes a minute or two and then it’s another 5 minutes or so to the start to restaurant row. However, the walk back up takes a bit longer although there are seats on the way to break-up the journey for the lazy or unfit !

Overall, L’Esplanade is an excellent hotel and we had a very enjoyable stay. I would go back. However, given the choice I would still stay in Le Petit !

Hotel L'Esplanade was a absolutely beautiful. Spacious, luxurious accomodations with all the amenities of a great hotel. We enjoyed our stay tremendously and the staff was superb. Our room was an oversized loft and perfect for a ten day stay. More of an apartment then a hotel room. Fully equiped kitchen, beautiful view of Grand Case Bay. I have to admit the mattress felt like a futon which we are not used to but that is an absolutely minor thing. The market is close by with many gourmet foods to chose from and the restaurant row only a few minutes away. You must try the Rainbow Cafe for beach lounging and lunch! We will definitely go back to L'Esplanade, it is a real jewel.

Room Tip: Room 10 was huge and on two levels separating the living and sleeping area very nicely.

We just returned from a wonderful 10 day stay at L'Esplanade. This was our 24 stay at either L'Esplanade or Le Petit (sister hotel) over the last 17 years. We have been coming to St. Martin for 21 years and once we found Kristin and Marc (the owners) they have'nt been able to get rid of us. Us along with many, many others love the place. The service, as always, was excellent with Myriam, Natalie, Ann Laure handling everything professionally and with a great smile along with the housekeeping staff which we have come to know over the years. It's revisiting friends each year. We stayed in a deluxe loft which was spacious and comfortable with a large balcony and an excelent view of Grand Case bay. All units have a patio or balcony with views of the bay. There is also a kitchen in all units which comes in handy for storing food and beverages for a quick breakfast or lunch. There is a full supermarket (incl beer, wine & liquor) 5 minutes from the hotel and several smaller stores in town. We utilized the beautiful pool each day and believe me the pictures on the website, which are beautiful, don't do it justice. The path to to the road into Grand Case is a trip to be taken in itself. My wife took the path each morning walking into town and came back with different flowers each time from the various foliage. The grounds that surround the hotel are beautiful and help create the overall ambiance of the hotel. We rented our car through the hotel. Marcus or Harry will pick you up and drop you off when leaving...convenient and easy. Great guys too. I would highly recommend renting a car as there is a lot to see and do and its easy to get around...except for the occasional dumptruck going up one of the hills. As mentioned, the path to town leads to numerous restaurants for any taste and pocketbook. There are also many good restaurants a short drive from the hotel. The staff will make all dinner reservations for you. Wifi works very well...we used it each day. To avoid redundancy, we wholeheartedly agree with all the positive comments made in previous reviews on TA. They are well said and right on the money. We obviously love this place but the thing that brings us back each year is the consistent quality of service, attention to detail, upkeep of the property and rooms and the quality of the staff and housekeeping. That all starts with the owners, Kristin and Marc, and goes from there. They are on top of everything and it shows every day. Every year we hate to leave but its sure great to know we'll be coming back next year.
