We always try new islands and new places when we visit islands - but we broke our tradition and returned to St Martin and the GCBC for the 2nd time (last time was 3 years ago). We stayed in the 'Tamarind' wing - which we encourage others to do to - close to everything, great views. The staff is very helpful (made phone calls for us for reservations, find open / close times and more), the grounds are very clean, and the rooms are very nice and well taken care of. Since we last visited they have deployed wifi throughout the buildings (you used to have to go to the lobby) - which is a great add. The rooms have sliding glass doors and screens and if you go out on your balcony you can actually close the balcony off from view and extend your room. We asked for a blender, help with our bags, an extra hour to check out and more - none were even a small issue. Minor comment - I wish they also provided hair conditioner (vs a shampoo / conditioner) - I know it's a nit but I didn't think ahead to bring separate hair conditioner. Another minor - there is a $5 a day charge to use the fitness center - that bugs me a little but it's a nice small fitness center. Overall the price of our stay was exceptional (less than $200 a night including taxes - off season by a couple weeks) - so I cannot complain much about the $5 (they could raise everyone's rate $5 a day and get the same volume and let the fitness center be free). We both slept very well each night in a comfortable bed!
The one beach does not have a lot of room on it because of the tides - but the other beach has plenty of room. The beach falls off somewhat quickly (which happens a lot in St Martin) into an above your head depth. There are starfish to be found - but the beach generally is just a relaxing place to be. The water activity team takes care of the beach too - from 8am to 5pm the beach loungers / mats / tables / umbrellas are out and ready to go - need something, raise the flag - no problems.
We reviewed the Sunset Cafe restaurant spearately - but it is worth the trip to go to if you aren't staying at the GCBC. Sandra and Philippe at the Sunset Cafe are great! We had the special priced lobster one night - yum. The chocolate lava cake (not what it's called but you'll get the idea when you see the menu) is wildly tasty. Someone earlier commented that the breakfast is just coffee (realllly good coffee that is), OJ, and breads - but that is a typical French breakfast (you get a pain du chocolate, a piece of baguette, and a croissant for each person) and it comes with the room price. You don;t want a typical French breakfast, get something off the menu - it's pretty simple.
The small store onsite is very nice and the person who runs it helped us with directions to some local places we wanted to go to - just great.
For water activities, the water activity team is very helpful - we took and highly recommend the Scoobi Doo catamaran day trip to St Barth's. The catamaran picks you up and drops you back at the GCBC beach and the crew was great.
So I read through the reviews recently posted and have to make a 'correction' - one does not drive through ghettos to get to the GCBC (to me, a totally inappropriate characterization) - not all parts of every island in the Caribbean are like American suburbs; the neighborhood around GCBC is so safe that people walk the 10 minutes form the hotel to town for meals every day and night - the people are very friendly. This is the French side - smaller individually owned stores, no chain burger joints, slightly higher prices, smaller streets - but ghetto - come on now.
