“Great Place / Great Service”

We stayed at the Simpson Bay Resort in the newer Villas and we extremely happy with the total experience. We had an initial issue with our room but it was remedied and we were treated extremely well by Pedro (the manager) who was amazing!. The room was beautiful and roomy and the view was spectacular! The Resort location is perfect for getting around the Island and many restaurants and close by along with various beaches. We travel to many parts of the World and have been to most of the Caribbean locations and St Maarten has much to offer.
I would highly recommend the Resort Villas Section and the majority or the resort has been recently updated.

It looks like a great resort right on the water, but its not. The lobby looks awesome, and makes you think its going to be a nice place. Then they tell you your room is way back and you need to take a shuttle to actually get to your room. And your room is decorated like a cheap airport motel. The bathroom left a lot to be desired, and was at most adequate. The balcony was shared by everyone, so it wasn't private, and you couldnt leave anything outside to dry. o and that balcony actually overlooks the parking lot, so its not like you'd really want to be out on it anyways. I'd have to describe the place as basically just a giant motel. Maybe if you pay a premium you can have a room actually over the water, but who knows. One nice thing tho, was they wouldn't let us do a late check out for our afternoon flight, but they did let us use the showers in the gym that were very nice and they held our luggage so we could go to the beach one last time and clean up before our flight. I wouldn't recommend this place, but it was one of the cheaper options, but next time I'd spend a little more and try something else.

Room Tip: I heard the villas were much better, so I guess try that.

Dear Guest:

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Your comments are very important and help us serve you better.

I'm sorry to read about your room experience. It appears from your description that you stayed in one of our old units; our resort is currently undergoing a complete renovation, which is scheduled to be finished by late 2015. Some of our units have already been renovated and they are available to guests for a fee. Since you mention having liked the rest of your experience, I would ask you to contact us beforehand next time to arrange for a renovated unit. I'm sure you'll love it!

We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you back soon.

Warm regards,

Camilo Olea

The resort is great. Loved the location, size, staff, etc. We did not love our room.
This was our first trip to St. Maarten and we were using my mother's week as she owns a unit in this resort. We asked for her unit - which is in the B building and which she loves - but it was under renovation. They put us in the M (Marina) building, and for the life of me, I don't know why. From the time we got in a cab from the airport throughout the whole week, all we heard was how slow the month of September is with some places closing for the month. This means the resort had plenty of options where to put us and they put us in the oldest, most beat-up building in the place. We had a third floor one bedroom unit that had a kitchen and sleep sofa. It overlooked the bay right over the Marina Plaza. While my husband enjoyed watching the boat activity, I didn't think it was an attractive view and I would have preferred a nice view such as the pool, the ocean side, or even the gardens. Our unit was so old and beat up that the white tile floor had so many nicks in it which had turned black over time - I kept thinking there were bugs all over the floor. Even the bathroom sink and toilet seat had nicks in them that looked like dirt at a glance. Our bedroom at the back of our unit had a window which faced the back of the parking garage just a few feet away. We had to walk thru that garage to get anywhere, and it was dark and dingy like a parking garage in any old city would be. When we first arrived, either the refrigerator or dishwasher had leaked and there were big water stains all over the kitchen floor. Easily cleaned, but not nice to arrive to. We had no remotes for the TV or AC in the living room area, so we requested them (there was no way to change the freezing cold temp of the AC in that room manually or with the bedroom AC remote). We did get a new TV remote, but never did get the AC remote. We just unplugged the unit for the whole time we were there. We never utilized the kitchen so I can't remark on that. I will say that our king-sized bed was very comfortable. I wouldn't have been as annoyed with our room if I knew they were at full capacity, but I knew there were other, much nicer options available and was unhappy that they put us in this unit - especially since my mother owns a unit at this resort. I've heard that the entire resort will be completely renovated within the next couple of years, so I assume the M building will be revamped at sometime soon. That being said, everything else about the resort we loved. Very friendly staff - loved Metal, the bartender, at the bay side pool.
My suggestion would be, when booking or arriving, ask to be someplace else other than the M building - and then you'll love this place.

Room Tip: Avoid the M building! It's old and in desperate need of renovations.

Dear Guest:

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Your comments are very important and help us serve you better.

As you know, the resort is currently undergoing a complete renovation; the M building is scheduled to begin renovations in early 2015. If a member has paid his/her renovation assessment, we can relocate them to other renovated units. Let me find out with management if in this case your mother might have not covered that fee and that was the cause of being put in a non-renovated unit.

In any case, I am truly sorry about your room experience and offer you a sincere apology for that. I'm glad to read that other than that, you enjoyed your stay with us.

We appreciate the feedback and hope to see you back soon.

Warm regards,

Camilo Olea

Did a girls trip here and stayed in the villas, had an upstairs and downstairs living quarters. There were 2 queen beds, 1 pullout bed, and 1 pullout couch bed. Since there were 8 of us, we switched around who got the rooms. The Resort had everything we needed within walking distance, a grocery store, bars, gift shops, and ofcourse a really nice beach and pools. The activities were fun as well, did the "booze cruise" on the Lamada which was worth the $15. They offer many other activities each day as well (water aerobics, trips into Philipsburg for shopping) etc. Definitely recommend staying here as it is within walking distance of great restaurants, bars, has a beautiful beach, and the services they provide make it convenient to get around town without a car.

We Loved the location of the resort. The check in and out went very smoothly. It is in great walking distance to many restaurants with a lot of variety to choose from. We were there the first week in Sept and didn't realize that is the month a lot of business close for vacation and renovation so expect to find several places closed.
We stayed in F-21, which was right on the beach and was close to everything. The room was not renovated and was very dated but the beds were comfortable and clean. It was a very spacious villa and the master was on the second floor of the villa with a great view of the ocean. The second bedroom also had a king bed and its own bathroom. Both rooms had their own balcony and also a balcony in the living room. The upgrade prices seemed a little steep to me and we were comfortable enough in the room we had.
I probably wouldn't want to stay there again until the renovations are complete and every room is just as nice as the other without extra fees.

Love this resort! Love the island, the resort and closer proximity to everything. No need for a car lots of restaurants and grocery stores nearby! Highly recommend the stone and the peli deli for quick groceries. Entire resort to be renovated by 2015 and it already looks amazing! Great staff and amazing views.

I was expecting a hassle upon check-in due to other reviews, but we had no problem at all. It was quick, the desk staff was very friendly, and we got a shuttle ride to our room, which was in the Croton building. We didn't have much of a view since the villas were right in front of us, but we're from Miami. We get beautiful views all the time so it didn't bother us much. The building was quiet, but quite a hilly walk from the lobby/beach. We were ok with it, but for someone with difficulty walking, this unit would not be a good choice. Our studio was clean, nicely decorated, and had everything we needed. One night, we went to use the corkscrew and found that it was broken. A call to the front desk had our new one within 10 minutes. We also had to call maintenance one day b/c the toilet kept running/filling. They were supposed to come by during the day to fix it. When we returned that evening, it seemed ok for awhile, then went back to non-stop filling. We were leaving the next day so it wasn't a big deal.
One tip - it's pretty buggy outside. Bring matches and a citronella candle if you like to use the balcony.
The gym was beautiful and had almost any machine you would want. The pool in front of the villas was very nice, and we enjoyed lunch and drinks at the pool bar. The bartender was very friendly.
We rented a car for the 2nd half of our trip, which made getting to our unit much easier. I highly recommend renting a car as it seems to be the best way to get around this island. Otherwise, use the local bus (only $1.50 - much better than taxi prices!!)
