We needed a place to stay for two nights before checking into our Dawn Beach timeshare. Expedia showed this location as an available hotel. Well, we arrives SXM at 9pm. By the time we arrived at the "old Pelican" we were told there was no food and no place to buy bottled water on premise. Had to walk to a local bar. Humm. So the room was satisfactory, but AC pooped out and the safe did not work. We called 3 times for the safe in one day. Finally gave up and carried everything with us, to come back after the beach to find no one cleaned the room. I get the timeshare thing. Own them. But if your paying to stay in a hotel, you expect new towels! Hence, not the best impression. Thing that really intrigued me was that they claimed to be on the renovation and way to being a 5 star resort. Well, they have a VERY LONG WAY TO GO! I rate this a 2 star, with the personnel of a motel 6. View is great from the more modern Villa's, and the gym, exceptional for the islands (hence $6 resort guest fee), but don't charge me a steep rate and not provide hotel service. And they claim to have amazing staff. an 18 year veteran at the bar was unfriendly and just blah. Oh, and folks, NO ICE MACHINES on premise. Be prepared to go buy ice if you want a drink in your suite/timeshare room. Junior suites have no ice making capacity. Mini fridge at best.

Room Tip: Villa's are newer.

Simpson Bay Resort & Marina Management Response:

Dear Guest,

We sincerely thank you for taking your time to write a review. Your comments are very important to us and help us serve you better.

On behalf of all the staff at Simpson Bay Resort, we are sorry to know that your impression of the resort was not up to your expectations, surely this is not the norm.

Government regulations on the island of St.Maarten outline that all stores should be closed by 9:00 PM, there are some exceptions such as gas stations. In addition, many restaurants locally closed their kitchen a little past after 10:30 / 11:00 PM. Including the ones located at the Resort, however in some cases there are exceptions.

We are happy to know that you found the room and the view satisfactory however we will definitively follow up to address the concerns mentioned with our maintenance department, namely the issues with the safe. This will be addressed. Please also note that in all our rooms, a complete set of towels and linen is provided in the closet for your convenience, and an additional set in the bathroom.

As you correctly stated in your review, the resort is in the process of renovating the whole original section of Simpson Bay Resort, making all of the 342 units premium accommodation, four buildings have already been completed and the rest are underway.

Once again, we greatly value your comments as they are our best tool to improve our services.

We hope you give us the opportunity once more to host your vacation.

Warm regards from Sunny St. Maarten,
Pedro Sanchez

About the only good thing this hotel has going for them is the great location they are in. Otherwise, the place is old, people are rude, and all of their hotel policies stink. That's right, their policies stink.

What hotel closes their ONLY hotel bar at 9pm each night? Or, limit only one towel per day per person? Or, charges you for "damaging" beach towels? Or, take your pillows away during cleaning and don't return them so you could sleep?

There are other choices on the island, I suggest staying on the French side if you could. The people seem to be nicer on that side anyway.

The location was beautiful, right on the bay; enjoyed seeing the sailboats and yachts, and night lights across the bay, even flights coming and going. The turquoise colors of the bay are beyond words, just gorgeous.

I'm an owner of Kona Coast Resort, so used to five star luxury, but in this exchange we were put into the old building, Marina. Yes, they are upgrading the villas, but would not change our accommodations. It was 1970's decor, but did have all the kitchen things we needed, and we liked that it was close to pools and beaches.

However, our leaving was not so pleasant. We are smokers who used the balcony and were respectful of not smoking inside. You can imagine my dismay as we were packing when housekeeping and security came to the door to say they'd smelled smoke! I was alone while my kids were loading the car. They insisted on coming in to "inspect" and they actually found a tiny amount of ash on the coffee table, likely drifted out as the ashtray was brought inside to clean up. So they assessed the $75.00 fee and I felt as if we had been scammed for more money. Prior to our arrival, the sales office had called and asked for $499 to "upgrade" to a villa. That is totally against the policy of Interval International and I reported that. So this last thing seemed out of line to me.

Needless to say, we shall not return to this property.

Room Tip: Be very sure about what you are booking. I'm sure the villas are very nice.

Dear Guest,

We sincerely thank you for taking your time to write a review. Your comments are very important to us and help us serve you better.

We are sorry to hear that your last impression of the Resort was not a good one. As is customary in other resorts, we do have a Non-smoking policy in our units. A routine inspection was carried out by the Supervisor and Manager on Duty, when they arrived they noted that smoking did occur in the unit. As a resort policy we charge $75.00 USD for deep cleaning as it implies changing bedding, removing and washing cushions, removing curtains , etc. Once again, this policy is in place to ensure the safety and relaxation of all of our members and guests.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and hope you give us the opportunity to host your vacation once more with us.

My husband and I arrived on Sunday and were at the resort within 45 minutes of landing. A $15 taxi ride brought us right to the door. We were first give a room up on the hillside but asked for a change to the marina rooms, which was quickly made at the desk. We unpacked and did a walk around to locate the pools, restaurants, etc. and found a nice spot by the pool to soak up some sun. We found the resort to be in transition ..some buildings have been remodeled others are in the works. Our room was an older unit, but everything works and it is extremely clean.
We found Bon Appetite has the best pastries and baguettes every morning. And the peli deli is well stocked with items you may need. The green grocery down the hill past Burger King has cheaper prices, bring your own bags.
The staff is helpful and gracious and the front desk is very helpful with recommendations and assistance.
We were here for the Easter week and found the whole resort to be quiet and pretty calm.
Excursions leave daily, but the beautiful weather and sunshine made the beach so inviting.
We took this trip as an alternative to Cabo San Lucas and found it to be a great location with almost perfect weather...got rained no one day in phillipsburg.

Nice place but we all need to be able to access the Internet....no excuses here take dare of the issue. The resort is nice but I travel a lot and even the most remote places ensure customers have access to high speed Internet. Years ago you had to pay by the hour here for it. Now it is free but the resort has not upgraded ports all over the complex.....

Everyone reviewing here has covered it all , and all things considered , this resort has way too many amenities for the others to measure up to.. Things seem to improve year after year in leaps and bounds , and the efforts to make it top notch are very evident . It is a large resort with various scattered buildings and you should know where your accomodation is so that your expectations are not disappointed, but since we exchange timeshare to be there I cannot imagine paying over $200/night for a unit with a view of a dumpster/parking lot on an island where breathtaking scenery is everywhere! I am posting several pics from our most recent stay in the villas.. We adore the staff there for the most-part!! Looking forward to bringing the whole family there one day.
