“Best Vacation Ever!”

If you like to visit a different beach everyday, love to snorkel, take island hopping excursions, and eat great food, St. Maarten and Simpson Baby Resort is the place. We are time share owners here and have been back to our resort twice. I would rate Simpson Bay Resort 5 except the rooms are in need of updating. The resort is undergoing renovations now, but no major noisy construction. All units will have amenity upgrades by 2012. We also stay in the F building as it is right on the beach and close to the Marina pools and restaurants. If you are looking for swanky modern appointments in your villa/room, you will be disappointed. The furniture is outdated but the rooms are spotless even though tile needs to be replaced. The VILLAS at Simpson Bay are new and will be more to your liking...but the views are on the bay, not the ocean side. The bay view is beautiful as well and just a short walk around the corner to the beach. The beach is protected by rocks on both sides but is open to the ocean and is great for snorkeling and even has a floating dock in the middle. If you want to take the best snorkeling trip ever and make new friends..sign up at Aquamania for this and other excursions. The staff was fabulous, the snorkeling was fantastic and the mid day lunch on Anguilla was fantastic.
There are so many places to explore on St. Maarten! You must rent a car upon arrival and visit the local grocery store just a mile from the resort to stock up on food you wish to prepare in your unit for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
We always eat breakfast in our unit and pack a picnic lunch and head out to a different beach everyday. Our favorite beach was FRIARS beach which has a fabulous beach bar and grill right on the beach. The snorkeling here was breathtaking and the water was calm. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas for about 18 to 20$. Upon arrival at the resort, you will be provided information with a list of beaches and driving directions. We had no trouble at all driving in St. Maarten, even with quitting time traffic in Marigot (hear Friars Beach). Other great beaches were Bay Rouge, Cupecoy and Orent Beach. We also took a boat to Island Pinel..which had a ggeat beach bar and grill and exciting snorkeling too.
Dining options are plentiful and within walking distance at or near the resort, or a short car ride away. We did not feel the prices were too expensive, but since we eat in for breakfast and lunch, we splurge on dinner. For exquisite gourment dining, a visit to Grand Case is a must. Again, very easy drive to Grand Case. Reserve early, so driving back at night will not be an issue. Shopping is great in Phillipsburg. Great place to buy table linens and gold jewelry.
Overall, the staff at Simpson Bay are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean but outdated. The beach is fantastic, the options for island fun are endless. You will not be dissapointed!

Room Tip: If you want modern amenities, choose the VILLAS at Simpson Bay. If you want to be right on the beac...

We stayed at the Simpson Bay Resort in St Maarten August 6-13th 2011. We thought the resort was fine. When we arrived they were friendly and a quick check in. We stayed in the Bougainvillea on the 5th floor and we had a great view of the ocean. We were worried about the resort when we saw the comments. Yes the furniture and decor was dated but very clean. We had 4 people in the unit it was large and comfortable. Every morning we would see the staff maintaining the pool and grounds.

We rented a car at the airport. It was nice that it is a small island because everything was close all the great beaches and attractions your not driving for hours. There were some traffic problems from the airport to the traffic circle in Simpson Bay but otherwise traffic was ok. The roads are narrow and have potholes and speed bumps randomly.

One of our favorite places we visited was Grand Case the water was beautiful and we had a great barbecued rib lunch right on the water. Also the Buccaneer right before you enter the resort was a great place to eat. We ate there many times, great burgers and beers! I would definitely recommend the Simpson Bay Resort and will return.

I just spent 10 days at this resort and it was my 5th time staying here. It is a clean, safe resort, close to penty of dining and on site casino. It is not fancy or modern but if you appreciate a good value for your money you will enjoy staying here. Huge property with 5 pools. Only possible negative is that it is hilly but the excerise helped even out all the food we ate. Try local restaurant Alexander's for meals that are reasonably price with good home made food.

We stayed at this resort last year and had such a great time we decided to go back. Our room was clean with a great view; customer service was excellent. Pools were clean and well maintained. Highly suggest renting a car to explore all of the beachs on the island. At the resort, you can purchase chairs for the entire week and purchase water floats. Also recommend going to Pinel Island, La Gallion Beach, Orient, Friars Bay and Happy Beach. Happy Beach is a hike behind Friars Bay but well worth the walk. I love this location because you can walk to Pinapple Petes, Toppers and the Greenhouse... our favorite restaurants on the island. Can't wait to go back and visit next year again.

We are Marriott timeshare owners and traded to this resort at the end of July/beginning of August. We were first assigned to a room in the "B" building. Got in the room and it not only smelled odd but it was also outdated...definitely not an equal trade to the Marriott rooms we've had. We asked to be switched to the newer building and received a much nicer room near the pool, but we had to pay $450 for the upgrade. Clean, plenty of space to move around for just two of us. All in all, I was not impressed with this resort. It was fine, but nothing great. Just beer and sodas at the swim-up pool bar...no mixed drinks, no wine. Small beach in a different area from the pool. Had to pay to utilize the gym. Parts of the resort definitely looked run down. It was okay, but if you're a Marriott timeshare owner looking for an equal trade, this isn't the place. Also, a few things to know before going to St. Maarten: (1) you must rent a car. There is no real bus system (their buses are mini-vans that the locals use) and I never saw a taxi other than at the airport. We literally had to drive just about everywhere. (2) bring plenty of cash, since you can't charge too much on the island. We had to pay cash for smaller meals (such as breakfast), drinks, and even gas. We liked St. Maarten, and are glad we went, but we don't feel a need to go back.

We are a touch spoiled and tend to stay in some pretty nice places so I am trying to be fair here. First, the location (in terms of views and such, is pretty sweet. Nice beach, beautiful views of the ocean (depending on the room), and a fair number of shops and restaurants on the grounds. It was our understanding (from some locals) that the place had recently gone through a pretty nasty labor issue. It seemed to have been solved when we got there. Most of the staff we encountered were quite good. Very friendly at the front desk and usually very helpful. Elizabeth offered great food recommendations! Now, check-in took way too long. Not sure how they can streamline it, but it was pretty slow. Check-out was a bit better but my timing was perfect. When I was done, there was a line of about 10 guests, so they may have a different opinion. Be prepared for a $50 timeshare "tax" at the end that we were not informed of upon check-in. Seemed a little shady to sneak that in and I am not sure if it is legit.
When we got to our room, it was average. It just felt dirty. The floors were wet and a bit sticky. Smelled a little musty. There was some standing water in the kitchen. When housekeeping came after three days, the lady did a MUCH better job...even provided us some fresh flowers, which was a beautiful touch. The appliances in the room just needed a bit of an update. Nothing terrible, just needed some sprucing up. The a/c only blows in the bedroom so the rest of the unit (where our son slept) was much warmer.
The pools (most of them) and the grounds seem pretty well maintained. Bon Apetite (casual and inexpensive) and The Stone (more formal and expensive) are solid places to eat and you can walk to either easily from any unit.
The place seems to be making an attempt to improve. I wish them the best of luck. Has unlimited potential.

We traded our Marriott timeshare for a week in St. Maarten at this Simpson Bay Resort and were not disappointed. All the tips I received from the TripAdvisor Forums and the past reviews were right on. The Resort is in a great location to walk to the dining, casino, beach and bars. We rented a car and enjoyed the French side as well. There is a wonderful dinner cruise that leaves from the hotel so make this a priority. We also spent a day in Antigua and loved it! Have fun!
