Atrium Beach Resort and Spa

My family just returned from a trip to St. Maarten staying at The Atrium Resort with my husband and 13 year old daughter. The Atrium Resort was a nice resort and centrally location from the Deutch and the French side of St. Maarten. The only concerns we had with the Atrium was that they put a block on certain websites like MySpace, FaceBook and You Tube and when you are traveling with a 13 year girl with her laptop that was a major no-no. We stayed in a 2-bedroom and it was clean. We had maid service every day which was a plus. The staff and the people of St. Maarten were very nice and accommodating. The tours guides that advertised at the resort were pleasant, reasonably priced and safe. When we needed a ride to a restaurant on the last day of our stay, one of the staff members gave us a ride in his car. We would definitely go back to St. Maarten so my 17 year old son could enjoy the experience. I would return to the Atrium Resort.

Great price and excellent location--footsteps away from the beach and Picante beach side restaurant. Casinos and roadside restaurants are easily accessible by foot. Room was clean, except for some food left in the fridge by the previous guest...but housekeeping came shortly after we checked in to remove it.

Good AC unit and fully equipped kitchen, although no sauce pan or wine bottle opener...be sure to ask for one if your room doesn't have it, as they close housekeeping materials after a certain hour. Flat Screen TV, full USA cable channel lineup.

Grocery store right up the road. Free internet in the lobby. Overall great price and great room, but not for the ultra picky traveler.

Wife and I just got back from St Maarten, staying at the Atrium from 5-12 July. We made the reservation at the last minute (less than 2 weeks) because we had an RCI bonus week that was going to expire at the end of July and it was the only place available that fit our criteria. This was our first visit to St Maarten.

We normally go to Mexico, and the places we've stayed there are much larger with more to do, but Atrium still stacks up nicely.

We had a one bedroom on the 7th floor. Living area was large and comfortable, and it was nice to have a full-size refrigerator. Balcony had a nice view of Simpson Bay. It was also nice to have a king size bed, however the bedroom itself was smaller than I had expected based on the website virtual tour.

No central cooling, but separate AC units in the bedroom and living area kept the rooms comfortable.

Full housekeeping services are only on Mon and Wed, the other days are just trash pickup.

Pool is small, but felt good on my sunburn. There is no swim-up bar. Beach is nice, but water is too cloudy to go snorkeling from the beach. Good enough for a nice swim and for sunbathing, though. Chairs and umbrellas are free for Atrium guests.

Staff was friendly and helpful, I have no complaints about the staff. We did not eat at the in-resort restaurant, so can't review it.

Always felt safe, the doors are locked at night, and security guards are a visible presence.

The Atrium is located within easy walking distance of many good restaurants, shopping, and a couple of casinos.

Only have 2 complaints - The shower is low-flow, to the point where it couldn't get the job done to even wash sand off your body. Ended up using the tub faucet and a bowl from the kitchen. Toilet similarly underpowered. Also, there was a fart-like smell that emanated from the overflow drain in the bathroom sink when the water was running, although the water itself smelled fine.

Overall, smaller that what we're used to, but comfortable and secure. I'm rating it more as a hotel than a resort.

We used this hotel for 2 nights 6/26 & 6/27; before our timeshare was available. It needs a major overhaul. We had a studio with a partial view of the ocean which was all we needed. The bathroom was digusting. I lost my camera so I have no pictures to prove what I am going to say but please believe what I say. The toilet looked like it had not been cleaned in 10 years. It was black inside the bowl!. The shower was dingy looking also.
The beach was great and the location of the beach in relation to the buccanear beach bar was great also!.

However I will not return to the Atrium. I also found out on my last day on the island the hotel filed for bankrupcty. - May explain the lack of care.

Stayed at the Atrium in Simpson Bay from May 31 to June 7, 2008. It was a timeshare exchange. When I stayed there in the past the furniture and all the kitchen appliances were in good repair; this time not so much. The stove did work, but two of the burners were uneven so you had to be careful when placing pots and pans on them; and the oven did not go up to broil; I think it was only 230 degrees. Other than that, the kitchen was fine. The unit overall could have used some updating, like new appliances and new furniture, but in spite of it all, the vacation was great. The views from the balcony were outstanding; the people that work at the hotel were more than accommodating and couldn't have been more helpful. Would I stay there again? Absolutely!!

We stayed here with a timeshare, our first experience with one. The property was rated the highest possible, but it definitely was not one of the nicest properties we have stayed in.

We were first put in a very small studio room with a view of an ugly hillside and not even a dresser. We requested another room and were promptly moved the next morning to a larger studio with an ocean view. The accomodations were clean but definitely nothing fancy. The pool was not inviting at all and we never even went out there. Overall the staff was cooperative and helpful.

We are basically spoiled by our all inclusive experiences. This trip, though the room was paid for by the time share, proved to be more expensive than our all inclusive trips because we had to pay air fare, fees, rental car, meals and drinks ourselves.

St. Martin has some beautiful beaches, but we were disappointed in some ways. Traffic was heavy, the island was pretty trashy, and prices were very high. It was very commercialized. Also, our rental car was broken into at Orient Beach during the day in a public area and we lost a good deal on damages to the rental car and stolen items. Even though we took all the insurance on the rental car, we found there was a $750 deductible, and no personal property was covered.

I don't think we will go back to St. Martin any time soon. If we do, we will not stay at the Atrium. St. Martin doesn't have many hotels, mostly time shares, and we like the all inclusive trips better. Also, Simpson Bay is very crowded, and there are other beaches that are quieter and nicer.

The highlight of our trip was a boat excursion to Anguilla, where we snorkeled and had a delightful day on the beaches at Prickly Pear and Sandy Island.

Another RCI exchange. Another one with unexpected surcharges! RCI really need to address this, if there's going to be 'surcharges' and/or 'local taxes' surely they ought to know!

Simpson Bay is a great location in Sint Maarten, and the Atrium is right in the middle of it all. The suite we had was excellent, great view, spacious, well appointed. But the aircon didn't work (they replaced it as soon as we told them); the TV didn't work (they fixed the antenna plug - on the opposite side of the room to the tv); the safe didn't work (again, fixed straight away); the blender didn't work (another swift replacement). But why did we have to keep finding these faults? Surely the housekeeper has eyes?

There's no bar or restaurant inhouse, but dozens to choose from within a five minute walk, and they range from great fun, cheap n cheerful to excellent and a little less C n C ! The bar on the beach to the left of the hotel, is a great place to start, the drinks are so cheap, and the cheap BBQ food here is better than you'd expect! Inevitably, the best food is on the French side, and a car is needed to get to the likes of Grand Case, where you'll find the best of them.

A month after we'd booked, the Atrium wrote to us to advise that there was a noise possibility from construction on the adjoining site, that was good of them to do that - very few hotels would do the same. (Perhaps they'd had a few complaints, and were pre-empting more). It wasn't an issue when we were there. But Thanks Atrium.

Things to watch out for:
The inhouse rental car company gave me a Toyota with a totally wrecked spare, and you need a spare on this island - witness the dozens of cars on the sides of the roads with flats. And we needed one, and were stranded, and the gas station at Orient Bay has no serviceman, and no air compressor :-)

The local buses that run into Phillipsburg and to Marigot are often only recognisable as buses by the numberplate prefix BUS, they're just rattly old vans indistinguishable from hundreds of others except for the plate. And they run irregularly, but often, except on Sundays, and that's usually the first day of your stay!
