We caught a taxi van for 22 of us to Simpson Bay from Philipsburg cruise dock for $7.00 each way per person. The driver was great and knowledgable and stopped at a nice viewpoint. It took about half and hour as we had to wait for the bridge opening. Get off the ship early and check times for bridge opening to get to Simpson Bay Beach early. We went to the Karakter Beach Bar and were the first ones there at 9:30 a.m. and got chairs and umbrellas with our buckets of beer. The gorgeous beach is about a mile long with nice wide, white sand and green Caribbean Sea waters with gentle rollers. It is a south facing beach with warm tropical waters with a nice sandy bottom to frolick in the gentle rollers. The beach is parallet to Princess Juliana International Airport runway where you can see and hear the large planes coming and going but not too distracting. You can walk for 20 min. along the beach and roadway to Maho Beach where the large planes come right over the beach to land on the fairly short runway. It is quite a thrill to watch the KLM and other large planes landing across from the beach that has a nice bar next to the casino. We found this beautiful, sandy secluded , quiet beach a nice place for our family group to swim in the gentle rollers and enjoy a sunny beach day in St Maarten. In the end there were only 30 or 40 people there up until 2:30 or so. Would totally recommend this beach and a short walk to Maho Beach for anyone seeking a rustic, secluded, quiet, sandy beach to bask in the sun and Caribbean views. The palm and shade trees near the bar and the sailboats and yachts anchored offshore and long, wide sandy beach with blue green surf is the perfect setting to soak up some rays in St Maarten. The people are friendly, the food is great and the atmosphere is exceptional away from the busy beaches elsewhere on the island. The bus driver said it was the first time in 22 years that he has brought someone here so it is quite a well kept secret for some solitude in the Caribbean. When coming through the back up to Karakter Beach Bar don't be discouraged by the rustic, secluded appearance as the beach is gorgeous to sit under the provided umbrellas on their lawn chairs and watch storm clouds building on the far off horizon over blue-green Caribbean seas with frigate birds riding high on the updrafts over the warm, tropical beach. Awesome place to spend several hours swimming, sunbatheing , drinking, eating and visiting with family and friends and strolling down the long , empty beach listening to the gentle rollers lapping the white sandy shores.
