“Fabulous Vacation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2011

My husband and I stayed at the Azure Beach Studios (room 7) July 15-22, 2011 and had an amazing vacation. Mike and Fawnette are very accomodating and gracious and made us feel right at home. The room was very clean the entire stay (housekeeping was wonderful) and provided a small kitchenette which came in handy. The beach is beautiful! A short walk down the beach provides really good snorkeling, and there are many other public beaches on the island that are great for snorkeling as well. We didn't have any issues being so close to the airport - it was rather cool to see the planes take off! And after the first day, you sort of tune them out anyway. I would definitely recommend Azure while staying in St. Maarten! You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: While Room 7 is right on the beach, the shower is kind of small. The garden suites are larger and a...

We have just returned from our trip to Sint Maarten and we are already planning our next trip to "the friendly island." We stayed at the Azure Guest House in Suite 1. The owners, Mike and Fawnette truly treated us as their guests. They were very friendly, helpful, and welcoming. When we arrived from the airport and saw the nearly private beach and crystal aqua water directly in front of our room all of our worries melted away! We had the most relaxing vacation we have ever had! The room had everything we needed, including a safe. The location allowed us to walk to many restaurants, no need to rent a car. We were able to flag a bus at the end of the street and ride to Phillipsburg for $1.50 each. Again...no worries transportation. We walked on the beach every morning and night. We enjoyed several great meals at the restaurant, Tides, at Mary's Boone (5 minute walk down the beach) where Miss Lisa took really good care of us. The food and service were excellent everywhere we ate! (Tides, Karacter, Skipjacks, Toppers, Cafe Atlantico). All of the restaurants and markets were within walking distance. (10 minutes at the most) One of the best things about staying at the Azure was that we felt like we were truly experiencing the culture of the island, not the Americanized version in some inclusive resort. We would encourage anyone traveling to the island to check out the Azure. We found Mike and Fawnette to be gracious hosts with friendly and helpful employees. Mike even picked us up along the road one morning as we were returning from the market! Thanks for such a wonderful experience and allowing us a "no worries vacation!" We hope to return soon.

Room Tip: We stayed in Suite 1 and woke each morning to the sights and sounds of the Caribean Sea right from o...

When I asked my husband what rating we should give Azure Beach Hotel for value he said "is a 10 possible?" Azure is truly a gem! We stayed at Azure Beach Hotel for 2 nights in late June 2011 on the way to and from Anguilla. We had nothing short of a perfect experience! The rooms are fairly priced, simple and clean and have everything you need for a great  low- key beach vacation. Mike is a gracious host that provided us with superb service. He upgraded our room to a beachfront room that had the most amazing view, helped us drag our luggage through the sand (yes our room was right off the sand!), offered us a cell phone to use while on the island, and had plenty of restaurant suggestions. The hotel is an $8 cab ride from the airport ($28 to Marigot) and is set on a beautiful stretch of white sand with crystal blue waters. The beach chairs are very comfortable and the umbrellas offer a nice respite from the sun. The surrounding neighborhood of Simpson Bay is not a resort area, but is very residential and does lack adequate lighting on some of the streets. However we felt safe and there are plenty of restaurants within a 10-15 minute walk. Go to Lee's Roadside Grill for dinner and Cafe Atlantico for breakfast! Both very good!  Some previous comments suggested that the airport noise made it difficult to relax. It IMPOSSIBLE not to relax at Azure Beach Hotel and you'll never hear anything besides crashing waves!

Unbelievable vacation memories will be created when you stay at the Azure Beach Studios. Fawnette and Mike truly are the most gracious & hospitable hosts. Our room contained all the necessary amenities, including free WiFi, A/C and free phone calls to the States. We woke up each morning to the soft sounds of gentle waves on Simpson Bay then would relax in the sun on the cleanest, private white sandy beach on St. Maarten. We rented paddle-boards next door for a fun workout, ran on the beach, and enjoyed daily beach walks marveling at the turquoise water. The ever-accommodating Fawnette and Mike suggested delicious restaurants within walking distance including our favorite breakfast place, Zee Best and Top Carrot for healthy organic juices and food. Don’t miss out on Saratoga for an amazing dining experience. Several markets are also within walking distance to stock up on snacks. The rooms are super clean with a friendly, helpful staff. And the artwork! I only wish I had half of their talent…

Azure will quickly become a beacon for discerning vacationers who enjoy cozy accommodations with a warm and friendly staff. The Beach Studio exudes an essence of tranquility and affordability for a dreamy Caribbean getaway. We traveled with another couple and the four of us will make this an annual vacation destination for certain! Thank you Fawnette and Mike for one of the best vacations we have had. I know this to be true because I actually cried when the plane took off and I spotted the Azure from the sky. We look forward to our return, perhaps sooner than we think.

Room Tip: Book in advance!

We arrived for our week stay prior to a cruise on a Sunday afternoon in the high season. Michael and Fawnette were very welcoming. We stayed in the the Tropical Suite which was very large and had almost everything we needed. However, thankfully I'd brought a hair dryer because there wasn't one in the room. Little things were broken (e.g. drawer in the dresser), but the overall impression was that improvements were constantly being made. Sunday is a busy travel day and when all the big jets started taking off to leave the island that afternoon, I originally thought we'd made a big mistake. The guesthouse is only a block and a half from the end of the runway and the noise is considerable. However, I decided to reserve judgement since we were directly on the beach and the setting was beautiful. That night we walked into town for dinner and I was amazed at the number of different types of food and reasonably priced meals.

The next day was a relaxation day at the beach. Although we were there in the high season, the beach was almost empty. The guesthouse provided lounges and umbrellas. Large mega-yachts were moored in the bay. It was a beautiful sight. The only problem were the commuter planes taking off almost overhead and the occasional jets. This sounds pretty negative but it's a trade-off. Because of the proximity of the airport, there aren't a lot of high-rise hotels around. Consequently there aren't a lot of tourists on a gorgeous beach. We were within walking distance of a lot of good restaurants, car rental places, bus stops, and a small market for our supplies. So for us, we decided we would choose Azure Beach studios again... despite the plane noise. If you want to get away and relax away from a lot of people, eat good food, and stay on the beach at a reasonable price and can tolerate some noise, this may be the place for you. However, if you want a quiet resort hotel with a lot of hotel amenities, then I think you should look elsewhere.

The Azure was a great stop on our trip to Sint Maarten! Beautiful property in the most beautiful bay on the island. The owners really went out of their way to make sure we had everything we could need. I will definitely be back.
Check out my pics. They say it all!
