“don't order fish!”
Reviewed March 8, 2010

This was our second visit to Mario's and the first visit prompted our second HOWEVER, this will also be our last visti to Mario's. We had reserved a waterfront table and were seated just where we wanted to be. My husband and I ordered mahi mahi and were served promptly--Both dishes were so overcooked and dries out, neither one of us enjoyed our meal. The asparagus was limp and slimy--I do not think the entrees were freshly cooked that evening. No one came to ask us how our meal was, they kind of glanced over and noticed we were not eating. When the waiter came to clear our plates, he asked if there was a problem and we said the fish was dry.--No apologies, nothing--The end of Mario's for us. Too many other stellar restaurants on the island.

“excellent imaginative food”
Reviewed March 4, 2010

Mario's is onthe canal in Marigot, actually Sandy Ground. The food is a delicious choice of continental, asian fusion, italian and whatever. If you are seated at the railing along side the canal it is that mush better. It is probably the best restaurant on the French side

“Most over rated restaurant in ST Martin...in our opinion of course”
Reviewed March 2, 2010

This story is told in REAL TIME: Arrived on Monday night for our 9pm reservation. Was promptly escorted to our reserved waterview table. 9:03pm, order taken for water and wine. Around us a five top and another two top were seated at approximatly the same time. 9:06pm, wine and water come out, properly served and we order. One app each and one main each. 9:10 APPS COME OUT. Both were ok but not stellar. We both ordered the special apps of the night, one a soup and the other sashimi, (which turned out to be cooked fish...go figure), as we learned later, both apps would be $20!!

The apps were taken away at 9:20 pm and then by 9:25pm both mains were served! I thought we were in a race to be the fastest turned table ever in Mario's! Interestingly enough, the five top and two top around us were being served at the same break neck pace!!

We ordered two specials- both fish courses. Mine came out so overcooked and bland, I couldn't eat it....but there was nothing wrong with it so I wasn't going to complain. The veggies on the plate were cooked hours in advance, did you ever have asparagus that sagged?? My wife's fish had a duo of problems- overcooking and undercooking on the same fish!! Her risotto, was so mushy they should have called it mashed risotto!

When the owner came by to see how everything was, he took one look at our little eaten plates and knew something was amiss. When we gave him our comments about the main courses, he said something like, "we've been in business for 15 years, we must be doing something right". With that, he offered us another main course, to which we both passed, and at 9:40 were presented with the check, which truthfully had the main courses taken off. No apology, no offer of dessert, nothing else except the check with the mains deducted.

As we were getting up to leave, the other two tables were being handed dessert menus. They too were getting the rush job. I don't know, on an island with fabulous food Mario's was our only disappointment on our trip. The lolo's in Grand Case were better! I really believe that Mario's Bistro was once a great restaurant....but was was once upon a time. Now they are living off their past laurels.

9:45 we leave!!

Avoid at all costs, OR, don't forget to say we told you so!!

“Over Priced”
Reviewed February 22, 2010

We have visited this restaurants over the years and was grateful to get a reservation. It was easier this year and there is a reason. It is not as good. It has an aura and I heard several tables boast it is the best on the island. It wasn't. The staff is energetic and spirited but the food qualtiy just wasn't there. The onion soup was great, the meat was fair, the fish tastless, the gnochhi soggy and the dessserts were fancy with little taste. The house Chianti was not worth $12.00 a glass and the cost of the meal was an overpriced $160.00. I think it has passed its prime.

“My Favorite Restaurant in the World”
Reviewed February 22, 2010

We read good reviews of this place but it exceeded expectations. The food is excellent, the staff is great, friendly, and personable. The location is superb.
We showed up at opening (6:30pm) and despite the popularity of the place, a late cancellation meant we got a table! Next available reservation was 3 days later at 9pm, we jumped at the opportunity. Days later we dined there again with seats on the water, a dinner my wife and I will always remember!
