Review of St. Maarten Zoo

St. Maarten Zoo
Ranked #26 of 58 things to do in Philipsburg

Of course this place isn't going to be like the National Zoo or San Diego Zoo, it's on a tiny island with limited revenue! But that doesn't stop it from offering a nice variety of animals in a fun little place. We've been several times, just about every time we go to St. Maarten. The parrots are pretty cool, and it has a large and concise reptile exhibit. When you're walking in to pay admission, just remember where you are and what to expect. If you keep in mind you're on a small island paradise and not a major metro area, then you'll be pleasantly surprised and enjoy your visit. Please don't write a review on here if you didn't actually go in the dang place!

Friendly and fun little place. Monkeys that played catch with animal crackers and threw them back and fourth with me. Peacocks roaming free hat will eat from your hand ( at least for me ) . Awesome place that didn't look like a plastic carbon copy tourist trap. A very comfy local place with character.

The St. Maarten Zoo is in no way going to compare to famous zoos around the world, especially zoos in the US, and that is to be expected. But, that doesn't mean it isn't fun or a good way to spend a few hours. Admission is $10 and you can buy a bag of peanuts for $2 to feed the animals. The zoo has lots of macaws and they all love peanuts. They are also all very well behaved and very gentle which is pretty incredible. I believe this is a sign that they are all well taken care of and some of them look like rescues. We very much enjoyed feeding the birds and that was the highlight of the zoo. There are free ranging peacocks that also like peanuts if you are patient enough to coax them over to you. We spent about 3 hours at the zoo but had to wait out a spontaneous downpour and bought a couple extra bags of peanuts to feed the birds some more. Two hours here would be plenty of time. We had a wonderful time and will definitely go back when we return to St. Maarten. If you don't like feeding birds or monkies or peccaries, thought, this might not be the best attraction for you.

This was a nice visit for our 2 year old daughter. She enjoyed seeing the animals. However it looks like the zoo has seen better days. My wife was thrilled with all the Iguanas running around (and she was particularly worried when she saw them up in the trees above us).

I was a bit concerned with the playground equipment. A wooden climber had tape closing off parts. The underside of the climber had some nails sticking out. Next to a picnic table there were some boards with a nail sticking straight up. For a play area I do not think this is acceptable, and caution parents to keep an eye on where their children roam here. If it weren't for this, I would have given 3.5 stars to this attraction.

They do a good job with limited resources, but then I'm from San Diego and it isn't fair to compare zoos.
