“A nice, pricey hotel in a great location”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Staying at the Holland House is a mixed blessing. You pay a lot, but you get a lot. Once you arrive there, it is good, clean, quiet and wonderfully convenient to beach and shopping. However getting to the hotel is really difficult on ultra busy weekends when many streets are blocked off and tourists are arriving in Philipsburg by droves. That's not a slam on Holland House, but on the taxi driver who dumped us three blocks away because she couldn't get through the gridlocked streets -- and then gave us wrong directions for walking the remaining distance.

The trade winds blow through the hotel lobby, the beach is just a few steps away, the restaurant and bar look out onto the beach and the bay. Pretty nice. Walking out the back puts you right on the walkway paralleling the beach. Walking out the hotel's front door leads to the street and many shops, and walking out early Sunday morning gave us sounds of a local church.

Staying in Philipsburg, and Holland House particularly just before Christmas seems to find everything at "Market Price". For example, the room had two bottles of water of approximately 0.75 litres. The tag said that opening each would add $5.50 USD to the room bill. YIKES! The restaurant has some really interesting offerings, however it is slanted more for those who put food quality and presentation over budget considerations.

For the highest rated hotel in this area, the prices are about what we expected and therefore we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Our room offered a street view, which from our fourth floor balcony consisted of many rooftops. Nic...

We stayed for a 3rd time at the Holland House and would definitely recommend it again. The location can't be beat. You can walk or take a cab everywhere so you don't need a car. The rooms are well appointed - nice beds/linens, updated showers/bathrooms and a wonderful balcony which overlooks the restaurant and beach. Ideal place to sip cocktails and watch the cruise ships depart.
Breakfast, which was included, was excellent and bountiful. Good coffee too. Beach chairs/umbrella was provided as well.

Several rooms were being renovated during our stay but the hotel was mindful to make sure there wasn't alot of noise or any inconvenience. The only downside is the elevator is SMALL [not an easy fix] and the staircase has small steps... so you have to be careful. But, none of these would keep me from staying at HH again or recommending it.

Room Tip: 3rd floor or higher rooms have the better views. Oceanside are the best.

We made a one night reservation here in June, 2012 to kick off our first cruise vacation in December, 2012. There were lots of rooms and room types available at that time and we paid for an oceanfront room because it would be quieter to assure a good night's sleep before heading out on the ship. American Airlines had a "mechanical failure" on our early morning flight, causing us to miss our connection in Miami, and after several hours of negotiating with them, got on an evening flight to St. Maarten, where American then lost one of our bags. We had called the Holland House about noon and emailed them as well advising them of our delay and asking them to hold our room, to which they responded enthusiastically. We got to the Holland House about midnight. We were greeted with two very nice room clerks who whisked us off happily to our room after tipping them for some helpful advice. However, suddenly events turned for the worse. The room they had assigned to us turned out to be a small billet about the size of a large bathroom on the street side of the hotel where the reggae music, horns honking, and people partying was so loud that you couldn't even hear the room AC fan come on. The first time we went to the desk to ask about the wrong room assignment, the clerks apologized but said there were no more rooms available because it was so late and all the oceanfront rooms had been assigned. They did not offer to reduce our room rate or anything. Because we were exhausted, we just decided to grin and bear it and return to the room.

But we could not sleep because we were so angry so I returned to the desk just to let them know that we would be lodging objections and complaints for their shabby treatment of us. With some effort, they agreed to reduce our rate by $30. Then I was really angry which they could tell by the look on my face. But instead of shouting, which usually gets you nowhere, but in trouble, I left. Several minutes later, I received a telephone call from one of the room clerks advising that they had contacted the hotel manager and offered to comp our room, which they did.

This treatment coupled with no room service, hotel bar closing at 10:00 p.m., bare hotel amenities, and more causes me to not recommend this hotel to anyone unless these things are not important to you. The only good reason to stay here in my opinion is that it is only a one mile walk to the cruise terminal (despite the Holland House's advertisement that states it is only a "short walk") You will still need a taxi if you have bags. Phillipsburg itself is crowded, dirty, full of casinos and nightclubs. There are several nice stores near the Holland House if you need essentials for your trip because of lost bags by the airlines. However, doing this over again, we will stay at the Marriott on the French side in Marigot next time which is a really lovely place and service is assured.

The Holland House Beach Hotel is a great place to stay! Perfect location, sea front and back to the main street, which is full of duty free shops.
Rooms are big, clean and comfortable, recently renewed.
Hotel staff is extremely kind and helpful, from the front desk to the beach attendants.
Lounge and restaurant have a very beautiful view of the beach, good to have breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Room Tip: Chose a room with ocean view.

Excellent hotel, perfect location in Philipsburg. Close to all the shops and nice beach right across the boardwalk. Beach has nice comfortable lounge chairs with drinks offered by staff from the hotel bar. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Helpful friendly staff. Wonderful breakfast offered with a choice of buffet or freshly cooked egg dishes. Restaurant meals were outstanding with excellent staff. Only negative for the restaurant was when smokers lit up right next to us ruining our otherwise excellent meal.

The hotel has a perfect location on the first street where all the shops are and the back to the boardwalk of Great Bay. The rooms are renovated and very clean. I got a very nice king size bed with very comfortable pillows. Not the best beach in the island but very clean with comfortable beach chairs. you can take advantage to order drinks from the hotel bar while in the beach.

The hotel has an excellent restaurant (ocean lounge) that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food is quite expensive but very tasty. They have a good selection of starters, main dishes and desert as well as good wines.

The hotel is around 20 min from the airport (with no traffic) and taxi fare is around 20 USD. To take a taxi to the boat ferry to Pinel island is around 30 USD and the taxi to Marigot is around 20 USD. If you take a taxi from french to dutch side will always be more expensive as the fares are in euros.

There is no pool, gym or spa in this hotel. However you could use the spa in Divi little bay resort. Taxi charges 8 USD and it takes 7 min to get there.

Some inconvenients: There was a problem on the balcony door that didn't open. Since I was staying for a few days, I didn't bother to report the problem. The front desk was not very helpful on finding me a boat trip. Anyway it was not their fault that boat trips run only when there are cruises around and the city is pretty much dead on Sunday.

Room Tip: Tip1: the street view room is pretty much the same size as the ocean view room. Unless the view is i...
