We I reserved through DRI I was told that we would have 2 rooms by the ocean. When we arrived I was assigned a 2 bedroom lock-off up on a hill with a view of a wall and a view of old dilapidated tennis courts where they parked rental cars. The unit was poorly stocked and furniture was in sorry shape. In the bathroom the light fixture was an open fluorescent bulb. On a 1 to 10 this place ranked as a 1. Nobody from the resort or DRI provided help. It was a 150 yd walk to the beach or pool which was disasterous for my 80 yr old mother. They also charged for renting your in room safe as well as a charge for some cause the island had.

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Flamingo Beach Resort. Had a great room with a beach view, as did the other couple we were with. Nice quiet beach, kind of private. Pool also great. Minimal construction as it was "off season", . We rented a car ,recommended if you want to visit the whole island. Many good restaurants in near area as suggested on Jeff Berger's everything SXM. Great french pastry at Zee Best near hotel. Found all the staff to be friendly,as the front desk staff. Would highly recommend this hotel!!

My eight year old daughter, my mom and myself just returned from a six day trip to this lovely resort. We got there late on the 12th - we were greeted by a very professional front desk staffer who ignored my whining for a beachfront room and instead gave me the key to a beautiful studio with a view of the parkinglot. The thing is - the room was so pretty and the beach was right on the other side of our door so we could have lived without the beach view. However, the next morning, the manager gave us a beach front room. It was fantastic. They really seemed willing to work with us.

The beach staff was incredibly friendly. Beach towels and chairs were always available. The guy who pulled our chairs out for us is my favorite. On the first day he said "Welcome to St Maaren. Is this your first time?"

I said "yes"

He said "Welcome for your first time."

On the last day he said "You are going today?"

I said "Yes."

He said "Did you make your reservations to come back for next year yet?"

And I really wanted to...

The front desk people were each nicer and more helpful than the other. Every time I met a new one he became my favorite.

The Rasta from St Kitts who does the Aqua Robics was a riot. I never made it down but My mom watched from our balcony and she thought he was great. She also watched the best tan competition and some other madness and found him to be very funny. On Sunday we were at the pool during Bingo time and he was very entertaining.

The free wi-fi was great. Although we couldn't access it in our rooms we could access it from this little lounge on the second floor, which was also a good way to met fellow travellers.

The kitchenette in our room was perfect. Listen - it is fully stocked. Pots, dishes, glassware, silverware, potato peeler, knives, can opener. Stocked. The full sized fridge has an icemaker.

The one unpleasant thing...was the toilet ...which made this awful noise like a dying moose when you flushed it. It was really bad. But for that view...we got used to it in a hurry. And the toilet in our first room was perfect. So we really did swop an normal toilet for a perfect view...soooooo worth it.

The location was perfect we paid $18 in a cab from the airport, $18 to Phillipsburg Or Town) and $20 to Marigot. We paid $35 from Orient Beach. I think it was this much for the three of us. We walked to Lee's for dinner and it was less than 5 minutes to the Pelican harbor to take the ferry to St Barth.

We did our grocery shopping at the Peli Deli - pretty reasonable considering the location - and bought our island dresses from Pam and Marcia on the big beach that the Flamingo shares with the Pelican.

Toppers -the restaurant on site - was insanely expensive, but the staff was pleasant (and very attractive - btw - quick shout out to the guy with the dimples- so worth the 23 dollar salad). Karaoke night was toooo cool. My mom and daughter and I were walking back from dinner and we were watching the karaoke and the host asked my daughter to sing. The little exhibitionist loved it!!!!

The pool is beautiful, and well cared for. We watched them clean it every morning from our balcony.

Finally, the vibe was just incredible. It felt like we were staying at our own home in the caribbean. And the staffers were family and the other guests were our neighbors. I was very touched when the group of French and Belgian kids my daughter played with in the pool every day waved bye bye to her as we left. "Au revoir mes amis," she yelled.

They practiced for a minute, and then shouted together "Goodby my fri -end!"

We are sooooo going back.

ps if you are wondering - yes the day tips to st Barth and Angilla are worth it.

The Flamingo Beach Hotel looks exactly like the pictures. All the reviews before mine are absolutely correct. Yes the elevator was broken, but there are 3 elevators on the property. The beaches are very small so if you're looking to walk along miles of beach at night forget St. Maarten. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful, but be prepared to pay a $250 deposit upon arrival (cash or credit card only).

There were some negatives about the property like the safe is available in the room for $1 a day (don't ask me why they would charge you for a safe). They charge you extra for extra cleaning of your room so remember to clean up after yourself. The water pressure is low, but I realized that you need to take a shower early in the morning (around 7a) for the best pressure. Also there is a 10a check out time on the weekends and a 4p check in time everyday. BRING YOUR OWN BEACH TOWELS!! Yes the property does offer beach towels, but if you lose it there will be a $50 charge. Also they do not have enough beach towels for the guests on the property so you will need to get up early to beat the crowd.

The Peli Deli is a little show across the street from the hotel it's like a mini market that sells alcohol, chips, water, cheese, chocolate, and they have a deli that makes sandwiches to order.

Just returned from St Maarten with my wife and young daughter and had a fantastic stay. The location of the resort is a $15 dollar taxi fare from the airport and is situated up a slight hill just off the main drag among other time share resorts. This an excellent 3* + resort with all of the ameneties you need for and enjoyable holiday. The room we had was a corner studio unit with ocean / beach view and was very well equiped, modern, clean and comfortable .....

There are two beaches at the resort, one smaller beside the pool and a larger one around the corner where you will also find Topper's Restaurant and Beach Bar. This is an excellent place to eat and drink with a great choice of food. The island has 37 beaches so probably worth hiring a car if you want to see a bit more and see the French side etc, you can take a ferry from Marigot to Anguilla / St Barts etc....

Around the resort is the Peli Deli Mrket where you can stock up on the essentials, there are other supermarkets further away but to be honest the convenience of the Peli was ideal, I did not find it much more expensive than the larger markets.

There are many restaurants around the main drag, it takes about 10 - 15 minutes to walk down the hill and take your pick. At the resort you also have the French Bakery (Good Pizza) and Alexandria's which serves first class fish, there are one or two others but we did not use them.

Had a fantastic holiday and it really is the friendly island, the hotel staff were excellent, friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble.

We have visited other carribean islands and St Maarten is without doubt the best so far. It is very unthreatening and safe feeling and no matter where we went we were made to feel welcome and greeted with a smile..........

Go on .... make a reservation ... you will have a great time :-)

Overall a great time. I would definitely go again, but not too soon. People were not as friendly as I expected for the "friendly island" - seemed only friendly on the Dutch side when they needed to be or could get something from you. Not overtly rude but just not friendly. The most friendly folks we found were the french people in St. Martin (so much for the stereotype eh?).

We stayed at Flamingo Beach Resort and it is a solid 3 star resort. Room was big, bed comfortable, view pretty good, kitchen had everything you'd need (fridge, stove, dishwasher, pots/pans/dishes/cutlery). The beach was good but not outstanding - not busy though. Pool was great at night and there were some on-site activities during the week. Generally a comfortable stay.

Price was right, but now for the downsides. There was some construction & painting (explains the price?) although it was conducted during the day when we weren't there generally. Staff was only OK - not terribly friendly. Cleaning done only twice in a week (although there were plenty of extra towels in the room). They wanted to fumigate DURING our stay (had to tell them no). Shower had TERRIBLE pressure. Elevator was not working so we had to walk 5 floors several times. But most egregiously was the fact that our room was not ready until 8:00...PM (but we insisted on staying until noon at checkout and they agreed no problem).

We ate at several restaurants and all were fantastic. But we did our homework first. Most noteably: Lolos - great ribs ($4 and they took US at par with euro). Pineapple Pete - great everything and very reasonable price. Plus really friendly staff and great live music.

We were concerned about renting a car given all the talk about crime targeted at rentals. Had no problems. Used Ace - best price. The problem, however, was the ROADS! Everyone kept saying that driving is idiot proof because there's one road that circles the island. Well there isn't one road. There are several times when the road ventures off to somewhere else - somewhere you're not going. The French side was much easier but the Dutch side was under considerable construction with countless detours that made no sense sometimes. Even the locals were complaining. Took an hour to drive a 5 minute route. The signs telling you where the detour would take you appeared AFTER the roads would fork. So you had to guess sometimes at which fork to take, and if you guessed wrong you would have to circle back around through really heavy and slow traffic.

Zip Line:
Two words: DO IT! Most fun on the island. Did the extreme course and it wasn't nearly as tricky as everyone made it sound. I could have turned around and done it again.

Went with Sand Dollar because it was connected to the resort and we slept in and didn't have time to make it out to Octupus. Can't compare them but Sand Dollar was good. The guide wasn't exactly exciting but took us out to where everyone else seemed to be snorkelling (Grand Case). And we enjoyed the boat ride to see the island from a different perspective. The dive site was good. Saw many many different fish and coral. Free drinks on board. Octopus was apparently a bit cheaper and would take you to two sites instead of one (it's based in Grand Case so you don't use the time boating out to Grand Case that we did with Sand Dollar).

Only had time to do our resort beach and Orient Beach. Orient Beach was a pain in the crack to find. Once again, signs are useless. Once you find it, the beach has beautiful sand and great waves.....and boobies. So if you're not into that sort of thing, have your kids with you, or it makes you uncomfortable, perhaps not for you. Have to pay for chairs/umbrellas. The drive along the coast out to the beach was excellent too.

Was bit disappointed. Marrigot market was OK on Wednesday. Had some nice stuff but WAY too much repitition. Front street in Philipsburg is too touristy and 4 out of 5 stores are jewelry. The people hounding on the street outside the shops was also annoying. We actually spent very little. Purchased some clothing in the smaller shops off the main streets in Marigot for reasonable prices. Booze is cheap and plentiful. My favorite was the 1.5 litre Heineken bottles. Gotta love the Dutch.

Even though we're not American we brought US currency because it was taken universally. Some places on French side took it at par but most charged a reasonable exchange rate that was consistent with the bank. We did find that some on the Dutch side tried to hose us on the exchange from Guilder to US. Be aware.

My husband and I vacationed at the Flamingo Beach Resort for 8 nights in the beginning of July. This was our fourth trip to St. Maarten and our first time to the Flamingo Beach Resort. Overall, we were happy with all the accomandations, the service and our vacation in general.

FBR is a traditional, solid three star resort. The rooms were well maintained and quite nice; the kitchen was complete with dishwasher, full stove/oven and ice maker in the freezer. There was plenty of drawers for clothes and cabinets for food storage. The bathroom had a large, walk-in shower stall and plenty of space for toiletries. The bed was comfortable and the sitting area, pleasant (minus the florescent lights....I know, enviromentally-friendly).

The cleaning staff was excellent, I never needed a towel and the room was always clean. The front desk staff was extremely straight forward and helpful. We had a problem with our cell phone and they offered us the front desk phone to use at no charge to call our cell phone company. The room was ready when they said, the charges were accurate and check out was a breeze. Topper's is a nice place to get out of the sun and have a sandwich and drink. The staff was friendly there as well.

The property is small but, well maintained. The beach is split by the property and a rock reef. One side is quiet and mellow, the other side is busier and has a festive atmosphere. We never had a problem with beach towels, umbrellas or chairs. There is a man who assists you in setting up your area. The sand is nice, not great, and the water is calm and warm.

Across the street from the resort is a store, "Peli Deli" that has a variety of food and drink in smaller sizes at fairly reasonable prices. The French bakery across from the resort is ok; but there is a bakery right on Welfare Rd (make right at the end of the street that the resort is on, bakery on left side) that is much better and you can sit outside on the lagoon by a small marina.

The only thing that bother us a little was the traffic. Of course, the resort is not responsible for this. We've stayed at the Oyster Bay Beach Resort the first three times we vacationed on St. Maarten and the area is definitely more quiet than the area around FBR.

Overall, FBR was a great vacation, worth the money and we plan on returning soon with our teen-age/young adult children ASAP!
