“mediocre service”
Reviewed February 26, 2008

I wasn't a guest at this hotel - I was travelling on a cruise last week and we spent 5 hours at the Divi which was enough time to see their half-[--] customer service in full action.

I typically don't travel in huge packs of tourists, but was travelling with the parents (grandparents) who love to cruise and my two kids. The positives first: the kids and I loved the beach, it was pretty, the loungers were comfortable and even with the cruise group there plenty of room for everybody. For those who complain about cruisers using the pool set aside for guests, blame Divi, not the cruisers. The package we booked was for lounge chair, drink, lunch and use of the pools. We were directed to them. I saw the signs saying Divi guests only, but if the management's pocketing money letting groups run rampant, take it up with management.

Nice staff - few and far between. A few beachfront girls arranged beach bowling for the kids for 20 minutes and were friendly. It ended there. The person who showed us over to the beach, pointed out pool, showers, etc., disappeared and we never saw her again. The bartenders were not busy, yet somehow still surly. Security must be lax. I mention in casual conversation to someone we'd be going there. He came off the cruise ship with his kids, took a taxi over, lounged at the beach, used the pool and never paid a cent. I stopped a hotel worker in front of the shops to ask if the gift shop took credit cards. Got the "I'm in the middle of a conversation with another worker" eye roll and snotty look before she told me, "I have no idea. Why don't you ask someone else?" Ummm, someone else wearing a yellow Divi shirt standing by the shops plaza perhaps? And then there was lunch. My dad's a fanatic about being on schedule so lunch was scheduled for 11:30. When noon, then 12:15 rolled around with nothing ready, my dad grabbed a table near the prep area and enjoyed the sun there. Good thing he's so fussy. We had to be out of there at 1:30 and lunch wasn't ready until 12:50. We were among the first in line. We saw the last people in the enormous line finally get their food around 1:25. No explanation for the delays, nothing. Which wouldn't be a problem, island time and all, if not for the fact that the delay didn't translate into a delay in the cabs leaving. They still herded us out of there promptly.

Some of above might be the transient, touristy nature of being in a cruise group which still stinks as an excuse. People at venues in Antigua, St. Thomas and the Bahamas were distinctly more friendly with the same type of groups.

Finally: Yvonne who does braids on the beach is very sweet.

We visited the Divi for 10 days in February 2008. Our room was a Beachfront King on the second floor. The room wasn't renovated but it was clean and everything in it worked fine. More importantly, it had a private balcony with fantastic view of Little Bay and its beautiful sunsets plus the sound of the ocean waves crashing on shore to lull us to sleep at night.

The beach was great. There were always plenty of chairs and umbrellas even on the days when the cruise ship visitors were there. The water temperature was just right, although the residents and time share owners said it was a bit cooler than normal. They also said it was windier than usual but the breeze was a nice relief from the sun, which seemed warm although temperatures were in the low 80's. There is a gentle slope under the water so you could go out quite a ways and still touch ground. There were waves good enough for body surfing/boogie boarding but not too strong for swimming or relaxing in the ocean.

There's a lot to do in St. Maarten/St. Martin (shopping, restaurants, casinos) but we mostly spent our days at the Divi beach watching the cruise ships come in and out of the harbor and nights at Gizmo's bar listening to the music or watching sports on the flat screen TV and meeting all sorts of wonderful people. The time share owners were very sociable and had lots of good advice about the resort and the island in general.

The service for us was excellent. The staff was always friendly and attentive. Some were a little more outgoing than others, but I think that is more about personality than rudeness. They made us feel right at home from the minute we arrived at the resort.

The restaurant servers did not hover over us or come by every 5 minutes to ask how our meal was (which can be annoying), but were always there when we needed another drink, or to clear away dishes, or order dessert. The bar tenders were right there with the drinks, which were good and strong (the Mud Slides were especially tasty). Once they got to know what we drank, they would start to make our drinks when they saw us, and would have them ready by the time we reached the bar.

A 15% tip (called a tax or service charge) is included in the cost of food or drink which is pooled by the Divi staff. We gave the servers a little extra to bring the gratuity to 20% and it was always appreciated.

When our transport back to the airport was delayed, the front desk staff offered to call the transport company to check on our ride, without being asked. Then they continued to call the company every 15 minutes to make sure we would get to the airport on time. While we were waiting for our ride, we saw them handle a number of guests' issues. All the guests we saw were treated courteously and their concerns taken seriously, including one guest who kept coming to the desk every few minutes to ask when his room would be ready, even though it was well before check in time.

Is the Divi for you? I think it all boils down to attitude. People who go with flow and enjoy the Divi for what is has should be happy. Those who must have the "perfect" and newest room should probably wait until all the rooms have been renovated.

After we visit a few other places on our vacation "bucket list", I'm looking forward to returning to this wonderful island and staying at the Divi.

Just spent 5 days at Divi Little Bay. Great one bedroom beachfront suite, near our friends. Nice little stores on property and we were able to rent a car right there. Disappointed in the buffet dinner the Saturday we arrived -- pricy and a very small selection. But there are plenty of places to eat off site. Lunch at the poolside restaurant was great. Hot water in the shower was a little slow in coming, but not a major inconvenience. The beach and views were wonderful, the staff accommodating and they gave good recommendations as well. I'd recommend it and would go back again.

One has some prejudices going to the Caribbean, but all comes true in this hotel. The staff does not seem to be interested at all, the older rooms are Spartan. Life music in the outdoor restaurant
is deafening This is a time-share hotel, that probably uses the older rooms for hotel guests without a time-share.
Should you like to sit among a drove of Hamburger smacking Americans, this is your place, if not, try another hotel, in spite of the beautiful location.

Date: Jan 26-Feb 9 2008
We are time share owners. Purchased in 2005, however this was our first time staying at Divi Little Bay. Fortunately our stay was far more enjoyable than previous postings comment of vacationers. Yes, the property is being renovated with the final stage beginning in April 2008. Our unit was in the yet to be renovated section but frankly is was fine, in good repair, very clean and no problems. The front desk is a PROBLEM. Fortunately I was able to talk to the supervisor, Camille, and she takes care of any issues promptly and without question. She is good, however the rest of the front desk needs to be retrained and take a course in public relations. Too bad that the first impression is so bad at the front desk. The problem we had was over the food plan. DON'T BUY ONE. Not having stayed at this resort , we were unfamiliar with dining on the island so we thought for the first week we would take advantage of one of the meal plans offered by the Divi. We purchased a meal plan for breakfast and diner in the amount of $1064, which amounted to approximately $52 per person per dinner and $24 for breakfast per person per day. The food is not gourmet but it is good and the portions are fine. BUT you can have anything on the menu for eg. filet mignon is $26. and it is very good and the full breakfast buffet (most expensive item on the menu) is either $15 or $16. for far less than on any meal plan. I sincerely have no idea how they arrive at price they charge for the meal plans but one thing is you don't need one. Our tab when we payed for a breakfast or dinner for two of us ran about $60/70 for dinner and $15/22 for breakfast. Eating away from the resort is great and the prices are about the same as at the resort. Since we rented a vehicle we were able to enjoy some the the local establishments and were more that happy with our choices. The beach is beautiful and yes the cruise ships do use the beach at times but the cruisers are in a section and really does not interfer with the regular guests. Perhaps during our stay there were fewer cruisers or we were not there at those times. We will definately be going back next year and plan on having a great time.

Avoid this hotel! Where to begin? First and foremost, the service at this hotel is horrendous. Staff are lazy and unresponsive. Reasons this place is a nightmare:
1) We arrived half an hour before check-in. They gave us a pager, but they never paged us.
2) When we asked if we had a renovated room, they said, "Yes." We were taken to the farthest building on the property, not beach-front as requested when we reserved. The room was so old and sad. It was actually a suite (we had requested a King size beachfront room). When you flipped a switch it sounded like a lawnmower was coming after you. We called to switch rooms. Initially, we were told they were fully booked and that we had been "upgraded" to the suite (ha!), but after demanding to speak with a manager, they switched us to a room we had requested, which looked more like the room advertised on the website.
3) Lock on the door of our new room did not work properly. We had to slam the door really hard in order to lock our room. We worried that our things were not safe and secure when we were out.
4) Room safe was not attached to the wall (you could carry it out of the room!)
5) When we asked for new beach card towels (we had left them in the first room and were told it was ok) they tried to charge us $35/piece.
6) After finally getting new beach card towels, we asked for beach towels, and they said they had no clean beach towels. At 11:30 am, mind you!
7) After arriving from the beach (on the French side-the beach at Divi is sad), we did not have water to take a shower or flush the toilet!! When we called to find out when we would get water, they said they would get back to us, and never did! For the rest of our stay, we had to deal with extremely low water pressure. Took me half an hour to take a shower.
8) The cafe ran out of pastries by 10 am!
9) Upon check-out, they didn't even say a kind word.

We arrived at Divi Little Bay on January 19 - 23. The check in was a little slow but we were aware of that as we had stayed there before. The property is under construction but it is blocked off and not disturbing in any way. The beach is still beautiful and secluded. The only drawback is that two days a week they bring ship people to the beach. It still was not crowded but not as peaceful as when they are not there. The rooms are being upgraded which is good. They are not dirty or anything just outdated. The beach, view and location is what brings us back time and again. You are minuted from Phillipsburg for shopping and close to the casinos for gambling.

If you are eating on property, the food is very good but the service is so slow you have to plan at least on hour from ordering to receiving dinner. Drinks are faster and not watered down.

While in St Martin/st Maarten you should go out to dinner off property as much as possible. This is the gastronomic capital of the Caribbean and there are so many great restaurants. Beware of the French side. Everything is in Euro. Check, alot of places take US Dollars at Par. This is very important.

Can't wait to go back! Should you need restaurant suggestions or anything else please feel free to email me at abenson@vacation.com
