“Nice, quite, great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

I'll admit, I was a bit nervous about staying here after reading some of the reviews....but not to worry.
This is a nice, quiet place with friendly staff and decent location.
Agreed, this is not the RITZ and it is a bit dated but it is clean, the people are quite nice, the food is good and we would return.
We shopped at the grocery store (not the one onsite) although it had most things you would need for convenience.
We got water, beer, coffee and breakfast food to cook in our room before heading out for a day of diving.
We did enjoy going to the bar (very friendly staff) but we also packed a cooler and brought beers from our room and hung out in the lounge chairs by the beach. They can be reserved for you but it's not a perfect system. You are supposed to get a chair for the week and it's the same but it wasn't as smooth as one would think. All and all, they do the work for you and find you a spot.
There are not many kids here. It is more of an older crowd and empty nesters - no kids, screaming and running about - I loved it! If you want a 5 star hotel, this is not the place but if you did your research, you would know that in advance. Renting a car is a must but it's pretty reasonable. You are close to Philipsburg, Simpson Bay and the airport is about a 15 minute drive.
You are right on the water so thats a big plus. You can walk over to the Divi but I was semi-impressed. Some reviews said that was the better place and people wished they'd stayed there...not sure why. Okay, it is bigger but big deal. The Belair was just fine and we would stay there again.

Room Tip: They are all good We stayed on the 2nd fl and that was nice - one 1 flight of stairs to climb (but...

The bar and beach was by far the best part. One night we even had a huge Bar be que. renting a car is worth it as the hotel is a tad out of town but the view is so worth it. Remember to check in at the beach cabana so they can assign your beach chairs for the duration of your stay. We were lucky to get chairs by the bar. I recommend the hotel if you like an easy going atmosphere. It's not ritzy but it's vacation living. Every room has a view of the ocean.

Just got back from Belair Beach on Nov. 3 and had a great time. No, this isn't a luxury resort, but the rooms are huge, the location is great and the ocean view is spectacular. You'll need a car, but Philipsburg is an easy 5 minute drive and Simpson Bay is about 15 minutes away.

Pros: location; very quiet setting; nice people; good meals at the Gingerbread Cafe; spacious rooms; functional kitchen; large balconies; wonderful views. Cons: first tier of the beach is all but gone; there are rocks that make going in and out of the water painful; wi-fi is spotty; welcome wine and cheese night was weak. Granted, the rooms are a bit tired and could use some updating, but they are comfortable enough. Also, the amenities, although limited, are nice touches. These include Lorna, the activities director, who is helpful; and the tiny store, Jody's, which will get you by for a day or so with snacks, liquor and lotions. You can also walk over to the Divi (a two-minute walk), which has more extensive restaurants and shops.

One more negative and one more positive: We were there in off-season and the place was maybe half full. On many days, there might have been 10 people on the beach. However, there were about 70 chaises lined up on the small beach, row after row. It became diffcult to weave through all the empty chairs to get to your assigned spot. Ending on a positive note, there was absolutely no pressure to buy a timeshare or attend a presentation.

I guess all we needed was a beach, a blender, an ice-maker and a view. Belair Beach has all that and much more.

Room Tip: We stayed on the fourth (top) floor, where the views were the best. However, all units have ocean v...

Mother nature does what it wants to do. Unfortunately when you were here there were heavy waves from a storm out at sea which took the beach away but it does come back. For the week of Nov 3 we averaged 84% occupancy. With 36 beaches on the island a lot of people do go to other ones especially since our beach was damaged at the time. We had to have the beach chairs up in case our guests wanted to stay on our beach. Glad you had a good time. We sure try to satisfy everyone.
We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

My brother and I visited the last week of October and the weather was perfect... somehow we missed Hurricane Sandy except for a few swells that affected sailing and scuba. I loved overlooking the beach and watching the cruise ships sail in from our balcony. It was easy to get to all attractions. Very spacious and I felt the staff was very friendly. I would highly recommend mosquito repellent as that was the only downside to our stay. We had bite after bite. I spoke to someone who stayed on "The French Side" and she had the same issue so I think it was the time of year, not to mention they had a big storm a couple weeks earlier. Great value for the money (we did an RCI exchange with my Worldmark points).

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor toward the back. I'd recommend being up on 2nd or 3rd floor for a beaut...

As for the mosquitos - When it rains we have mosquitos the next day. We spray and spray but unfortunately it is the entire island and the Government does not spray so we spray but other areas aren't sprayed so they just come back. This is one of the penalties of "living in Paradise" but it is worth it!

Hope to see you again soon.

This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel because my folks have a time share here. It has gone down hill since my last trip eight years ago, even though they said, they have done upgrades. If you are looking for a nice beach you have come to the right place. The only problem is the lack of sand due to the hurricane. The people are friendly but overall the place needs to be renovated! The lani's are huge and you have a nice view of Big Bay and ships coming and going out of Phillipsburg. If you are a pool lover forget this hotel!! Gingerbread cafe has good food if you don't feel like going out. Locations is ideal if you have a rental car. The wi-fi is horrible!!!! Get mosqito repelant they are realy bad! Rooms are ok but we had to stay in the 2nd bdrm and it is SMALL! Overall it's just ok.

Room Tip: I would choose the upper floors.

We are currently staying at Bel Air Beach and we are timeshare owners here. We have always traded this but decided to check this place out for a week. We really liked the closeness to the beach that is advertised and pictured. However, there is only a small (maybe 5 feet) strip of beach now, so chairs and umbrellas are on an elevated sandy area above the beach. We were assigned seats, which others, every day, moved and placed theirs in our space. When I asked the beach person for help, he just put me in a different place every day. On the fourth day, I had had enough and went back to our intial chairs. There, an old man showed up at 2 in the afternoon and was snarky with us because we were in his way.

This timeshare hotel is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath affair. Everything is serviceable but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why they would use 4 different types of tile in the bathrooms, or why there is a hair dryer in one bathroom but not in the other. No toiletries besides soap are provided. As owners, we had maid service every day. The maid service was ok but there were balls of hair under the couches (not ours) and our table outside was never wiped down. There is a kitchen with microwave, two burners, a large toaster oven, and a full size refrigerator with ice maker. We went to Grande Marche and bought groceries and drinks and were just fine with the kitchen.

We ate most of our meals outside on the very large balcony, where the provided citronella candles did a great job of keeping the midges away from us. Beautiful views from the balcony. Very spacious. There are two bar stools and four chairs and a table to eat from inside, too. There is a flat screen tv with a dvd and vcr player in the living area and a small tv in the bigger bedroom but no tv in the other bedroom, which is very small. Closet space was in armoires and a small closet in the living area. A fold out couch gives you more flexibility but we did not use it. The cushions of the couches do not stay put - they slide all over as you are trying to get comfortable.

We were lucky enough to have Tropical Storm Raphael hit while we were here. Unrelated to that and after it had blown out, the phone went out a few times, and we lost electricity, hot water, and air conditioning for an entire day due to an upgrade being made. The floors were washed while the electricity was out and we were slipping on the tiles, which remained wet the entire day. Pretty dangerous. The microwave blew out while we were here and the maintenance man came and replaced it immediately. More than anything, it is the attitude of some of the staff which we found in disconcerting. During the wine and cheese party, a very surly woman was pouring wine. She was rude to both my husband and myself. The beach side help were often sitting in the shade or sleeping in the beach hut. Once the front desk lady was sitting at the couch, while I waited at the counter. After a minute she got up and went behind the counter and asked what I wanted. No good morning, good evening, how are you....

As for amenites - there is a tiny pool and a second floor outdoor library. No workout area or hot tub or directions to a walking path. There is a restuarant, where I tried the hamburger and fries - which were very good but the service was slow. I didn't go back.

All other employees seemed to be happy to tolerate us - in the restaurant, at the front desk and housekeeping. There were some front desk people who seemed concerned and were helpful to give us directions to places in Phillipsburg.

Room Tip: Go to Grande Marche for groceries and try The Green house for dinner - its a few minutes away with f...

It is a shame you had to be here when a storm was close and then hit the island. Mother nature has a way with all beaches. She takes it and then gives it back. We already have a lot of the beach back and by next week we should have it pretty much all back. When the sand departs and we only have the top of the beach as you stated we cannot give out assigned chairs as we normally do since the beach is too small at that point. That is why you had to move around. Our beach men try to accommodate everyone. English is not their mother tongue and they don't understand or don't know how to express themselves at times. They have been here a very long time and do care but there is just so much they can do when the sand departs.

We did lose electric and we did have some electrical problems last week. We have a generator which comes on within 10 seconds of the power going out (our electric company here has regular outages) but we could not turn on the generator for several hours because of the electrical problem. Since we did not know that the power would be off and for how long, the housekeeping staff did their work and yes, washed the floors. We also had problems with the airconditioner at the front desk. Since it was very hot the front desk clerk came out from the back to cool off. This is something anyone would have done just as when there is nothing for the beachmen to do, we do not expect them to stand in the sun. We also installed our new air conditioning plant and had to turn off the hot water for most of a day but we advised everyone about this the day before so they could leave the property if they wanted. We are continually upgrading and maintaining the resort. If we did not the resort would fall apart. Maintenance has to be done.

Our staff, as a whole are friendly and we have many return guests who love them but we all have off days. We do apologize for this and do hope that you will give us a try again.
Our suites are what they are - comfortable and well maintainted but we are not fancy and you can't get closer to the beach than our resort.

My husband and I stayed for a week in late September in room 404. This is an older property, but is well maintained, super friendly caring staff in a secluded area. We loved the size of the of the 2 bedroom/ 2 bath unit. There was plenty of room in this unit, with the second bedroom a bit on the small side, but has it's own entrance to the second bathroom. The balcony on each unit has a fabulous beach/ocean view. Both bathrooms are newly tiled and modern. The hotel has a security guard at a gate, which made us feel more secure. The staff at the hotel are very nice, giving it a family feeling. Beuela (sp) at the front desk was a sweetheart! Take a jet ski tour with Troy and have fun out on the water. Make arrangements to rent a car onsite from Starlight Car Rental (formly Brinks). Nash will take care of you with great service & price. They will p/u at the airport upon your arrival & drive you + luggage to the Belair where you can rent your car and check in. Then they will drive you back to the airport on the day you check out. If you are looking for a resort with all kinds of fancy amenities in a modern hotel, this is not the place for you. But if you like a nice family style runned hotel that may have some age, but is kept up well, and away from the crowds, this is a great find!!

Room Tip: A rental car is a plus to get around to area restaurants and attractions. Ask for the 4th floor roo...
