Owner description: This small museum, in a converted 1800s house, covers the culture and history of the island.

The museum part is pretty good but what I liked was the little shop where you can buy prints and crafts from local people for reasonable prices.

We have been to St. Maarten many times and finally took the time to visit the Museum this time. It was very informative and well worth the time.

A new exhibit has been added to the Museum, "The Country St. Maarten - 10/10/10". Shows how the status of our great island in the Caribbean has evolved.

A wonderful little museum FULL of interesting pieces and exploding with information at every turn. Artifacts from sunken ships and descriptions of the people of the island were among the highlights for my visit. Not only are the artifacts fascinating, but there are informative write ups to go with them, explaining where they are from, who used them and what importance they were. Descriptions and information of all aspects of the island are in evidence, everything from cannon balls to sea shells and plant life to hurricanes. Students projects are wonderful in their detail and ain't it great to see them shared with others instead of thrown out?
All in all well worth the visit and it's wonderful that there is a museum such as this. It's a shame that there is only one museum on this whole island, as the history is so rich and interesting. Everyone should visit it, as it is within walking distance of the port!

I'll start with the truth - I am a winter volunteer at the museum. But I want to let all know just how good the museum is. First of all it is free - donations accepted - and it is the only full museum on the whole island. There are lots of interesting memorabilia of old St Maarten and for tourists it gives an additional level to your enjoyment of the island. It goes hand and hand with the Heritage Foundation and is also very involved with trying to save our ecology and old buildings, a very difficult process.

It is not the easiest to find as proper signage is not allowed but if you go to the south eastern part of Front Street (nearest the cruise ships) it is down the first alleyway, and if you look up you can see the sign.

I highly recommend it as part of a day in town. Almost everybody that
stops by says it is well worth the time.
