Being in the restaurant business for more than 40 years is a feat in its self, Joel,Sonya and Vernon will make your dinning experience something you'll never forget. The place in it's self is like a museum of going back in time. The menu is totally French with a bit of French Creole, to keep the locals happy. The escargot in mushrooms and puff pastry are heaven sent and don't forget the Guavaberry Duck it's excellent and crisp. Ask about there Friday night Cabaret live show.o

We went for dinner on Monday night and it was wonderful. We had lamb, the food was excellent and costly -but it is vacation. We made reservations for cabaret night, expecting the same wonderful food and treatment. That was not the case. We were seated next to a pole which limited our view of the upcoming show; our menu was very limited (no lamb) and upon being served our dinner we found it almost inpalatable. The fish was extremely over cooked the beef was stringy and unchewable and the service was more than questionable. My husband requested another meal from the cook and his request was poo pooed. We left the restaurant without eating and without seeing the show. I paid the bill which came to over $200 for a very miserable evening and horrible food that we did no eat. Don't wate your money on the cabaret night-it's not worth the indigestion.

We first noticed L'Escargot during a Sunday afternoon stroll through town. Although the restaurant was not yet open at that hour, we were charmed by the bright colors and snail motif on the exterior. Later, we noticed that our guidebook, which is quite stingy with the stars, had awarded it two.

On our last night on the island, we decided to have dinner there after a day the water. Since it was off-season (early July), we were one of only three tables. We received a warm welcome on the porch from one of the servers, and the owner and host, Joel, came over to greet us personally. We chatted with him and with the servers quite a bit over the course of the evening, and genuinely enjoyed the conversations.

The interior of the restaurant is comfortable, cozy, and eclectic, with echoes of French cuisine and culture everywhere. We ordered two escargot dishes as starters: the sampler of six different preparations and the Profiteroles aux Escargots Forestiere, which left us in no doubt why it won a Gourmet Magazine award. We then shared la salade de chevre chaud, which was also fresh and delicious. For mains, the island snapper was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared, as was a special preparation of fish in parchment, since they were out of their trademark sole that evening.

After dinner, one of the servers took photos of us inside and outside the restaurant so that we had a good selection of memories to take home with us. We were told that L'Escargot is in such demand during high season that they don't have the opportunity to bond with all customers the way they did with us, which is unfortunate if unsurprising. But if you happen to be in Philipsburg some weeknight in the summer, definitely stop in.

It was a wonderful experience in every aspect, and our only regret is that we were too full to sample the luscious-sounding desserts. We very much look forward to returning to L'Esgargot the next time we are in Sint Maarten.

The food was okay. The service was great. It took a very long time for the food to come. I have had better French food in the states. Dissapointed. - snails good, duck a la orange over cooked, most meat was over cooked. Just okay.

We came here on the recommendation of our taxi driver after our excursion. We were so hungry and were hoping to get an authentic local meal. It was very good....we were the only ones there, so the service was good (there were 11 in our group). The owner came over to us to chat and our server was very sweet.

The local fish was amazing but the kids were not thrilled with their pasta dishes that was swimming in olive oil. Very, very expensive! I think our bill came to around $350 and only a handful of the adults ordered a drink. They charge you $6 for a large bottle of water. I think if I were on a vacation with just my husband, it would have been a fabulous experience. Definitely not a place for a group of people to go. Even though the food was good, we were disappointed at how expensive it was.
