“Amazing!!”
Reviewed January 20, 2010

My husband and I stayed for 8 days and we felt as if we were family. The cottages are wonderful and quaint, the plantation is so lush and beautiful and it was a educational experience to see how cocoa is transformed from the fruit to the cocoa stick. The staff were wonderful and the food was delicious. As a vegetarian the chef would prepare local vegetarian food that was not listed on the menu - delicious!! The plantation is located near the town of Soufriere and there are many things to do in that area. I highly recommend it and when we decide to return to St. Lucia we will be staying here again.

My wife and I decided to visit St. Lucia for our honeymoon. My first tip and probably the most important one is to rent a car. It costs $20(US) for the license. We were able to do so much more and explore the island on our own schedule and you save $$$ when you do excursions because you don't have to pay the taxi fare as well as additional tour guide fees. Any way back to the Fond Doux. We spent 3 nights here and 4 nights at Almond Morgan Bay Resort. There is a huge difference between the two for many reasons. First of all, let me say that we enjoyed every bit of our trip and had a wonderful time at both places. Most of the staff at FD were very friendly, especially at the reception desk. They worked very hard to get us reservations at other hard to get into restaurants. The staff at the bar and restaurants were a little unsure of themselves. It seemed as if they were doing this for the first time. The food was ok. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit even if you're not spending the night. The pool area was very nice but small. The whole time we were there, no one was using the pool except us. The pool bar was unattended so we felt a little un-cared for. In other words, no drinks. I found a phone and dialed 0 and I got reception and they had me dial the restaurant to order drinks, which were brought up to us so not so bad, but who wants to go through all of that. We stayed in the Cinnamon cottage which was beautiful. The outside was a little overgrown by the front porch but you do get lots of privacy. The inside was decorated beautifully although a little dusty. We spent our nights there with a few lizards in the room with us as well as some tree frogs. There were also some red type ants on the wall near the front door. As bad as that may sound, it really did not effect us all that much and we never felt that we were staying someplace dirty. Neither one of us is a die-hard nature lover, and back home we would never live with these things in our house, but we made it work and were glad we did. We asked one of the security staff to remove a lizard we saw and he laughed. He did come in and spent a good 10 minutes trying to catch it. He finally did and removed it. It didn't matter though. There were more. So in closing, the Fond Doux is not for those who like to be pampered and have perfectly clean floors, walls and such. This is for those who like to do something different and explore what is like to be part of nature.

If you're looking for a peaceful, beautiful, authentic, romantic, cultural holiday within minutes of perfect beaches, Fond Doux is the place to stay. My girlfriend and I spent 8 days at the end of December here and had a really lovely time. The staff, who offered good service, were extremely friendly. Wherever you walked in the plantation - be it the restaurant, the bar, reception or the spa - you were greeted by a smiling, happy face. They all make an effort to learn your name and you simply feel like you are among good friends at all times, which creates the most pleasant atmosphere to be in.
Our beautiful cottage was a truly authentic building, situated deep within the plantation, meaning we were surrounded by trees, plants, hummingbirds, and all sorts of wildlife. Fond Doux is also situated about 3 minutes and 20 minutes drive from Jalouise and Anse Chastanet respectively, two of the most perfect beaches in St Lucia. Finally, the food at Fond Doux was diverse and of a very good standard.

We stayed at Fond Doux for four nights in November. We were met at the airport by a driver organised by the hotel and taken to the plantation (about a 40 minute drive)
On arrival our bags were whisked off to our room while we checked in and were then invited to have a drink in the bar -we recommend their rum punch! We were then taken through the grounds past a huge range of tropical flowers and plants as well as cocoa, coconut and strangling fig trees to The African Tulip Cottage, named after one of the trees outside. The cottage is lovely, built in traditional style with wooden slate walls. The verandah (with fridge and hotplate for basic cooking if you wish) is perfect for sitting on the rocking chairs and listening to the sounds of the forest. Inside is a room with a four poster bed and ceiling fan, and a separate functional but basic shower room. Some of the other larger/more expensive cottages are built on the hill side with views, but we liked this one as it felt really secluded and part of the forest - especially at night when it comes alive with the chirrups of frogs and crickets (clak claks). Its particularly dramatic when there is a heavy shortlived rain shower at night, beating on the roof. In the evenings we walked through the plantation back to the bar/restaurant, which has open sides. Each night we were there one or both of the owners was in the bar ready to talk to you if you wanted. We were very impressed by the pride they had in their island, their hotel and the plantation which they attempt to run in as eco firendly way as possible. The bar staff will serve you drinks (and make you cocktails) before you sit down to a delicous meal of soup, appetiser, choice of main course and dessert. The chef (who we understand was new) came out each evening to ask each table of guests what they thought of their mel. All the staff introduced themselves, learnt our names and asked about our day, without being intrusive. The hotel also offers a free guided tour of the planation, pointing out the mames of many of the plants and showing how the cocoa beans are prepared to send on to Hersheys to make chocolate. At breakfast you can drink cocoa tea made with cocoa from the grounds and can aso buy cocoa sticks in the small shop
You can spend your time at Fond Doux walking through the plantation (a trail leads up the hillside to a spectacular view of the Petit Piton) or lazing by the pool. If you feel more adventurous the lovely reception staff will book tours for you. We went whale watching from Soufriere and saw pilot whales. The hotel's taxi driver took us down and picked us up at the end. We also walked to the sulphur springs (about an hours walk downhill - take a taxi back!) which turned out to better than taking a taxi as on arrival at the springs there was a huge tailback of taxis and minibuses ferrying cruise ship passengers - which we were able to just walk on past. The Fond Doux also arranged a (free) transfer for us to go to Jalousie beach - spectacular setting at the foot of the Pitons and good snorkelling. Once again we just agreed a pick up time with the driver and he was waiting to collect us. On our last day the hotel arranged for a taxi driver to take us to Anse Chastenet Beach (best place for snorkelling) then he came back again later in the day with our bags to take us on to our next hotel in Marigot Bay (not free this time!)
This is not a place for anyhone who wants full blown mod cons (there is no airconditioning and the cottages are rustic rather than luxurious) but it is ideal for anyone who wants a special place to stay with friendly staff and beautiful, natural suroundings

My husband and I stayed three nights at the end of November at this lush jungle plantation. All the staff were very friendly and introduced themselves. (Special kudos to Eddie.) They upgraded us to a cottage, which had its own fridge on the large porch. The place is very well kept; the only bug I saw was one mosquito. I was amazed at how pleasant and cool it was at night, I guess due to elevation and time of year. My only complaint would be lack of a good reading light.

The restaurant was a bit limited: the complimentary continental breakfast was nice, but no option to buy something heartier. And dinner was a four-course set price, with only three choices of entree and less for the other courses. I think this is because it was off-season. However, everything was yummy, with sophisticated treatments of the local produce and spices.

As others have said, ask for Marcus the taxi driver, very reliable. And be sure and take a water taxi to see the Pitons from the water - the highlight of our trip!

My husband and I stayed at Fond Doux Holiday Plantation for 5 of our 10 night honeymoon in St. Lucia. We really enjoy our stay. They made us feel at home and the owners literally told us daily to, "make yourselves at home." The plantation consists of a few fabulous scenic hiking trails - one with a great view of the Petit Piton! The food at Fond Doux is AMAZING. Breakfast is included in your accommodation purchase. It is served with a platter of fruit, freshly picked from the plantation everyday. Dinner is reasonably priced (lobster, calamari, steak, chicken) and the service made us feel like a king and queen. Lots of locals from Soufriere came to eat at the resturant for what seemed like special occasions. On the weekends, there was live music. Marcus, a taxi cab driver who works with Fond Duox, took us everywhere we wanted to go. He was humble, informative and professional. Prices were about the same as home, although he would wait for us or return at an arranged time for no extra charge. The famous sulfur springs are very close- about 30 minute walk, however walking on the street can be a little scary with the thin, curvy roads and watch out for the cows! :) Fond Duox has 3 smaller individual pools lined in their lush rain forest- plantation. We swam there daily and we BYOB with our ipod speakers. Most days, we had the pools all to ourselves!! Sourfriere is only 15 minutes in a car. We stocked up on drinks and snacks to save a little money. The prices at the grocery store and the restaurant bars were about the same as Chicago. We had lunch at Jalousie hotel (2.5 hour walk - not recommended) and dinner at Landera hotel (20 minute walk) during our stay at Fond Doux. The views there were AWESOME, but the food was expensive. We stayed in the Hillside Guava villa at Fond Duox. It was a bit of a walk from the main lobby, although it was verrrry worth it. The room was equipped with a clean bathroom, fridge, comfy bed, sitting area, ceiling fan and sweet balcony! Only cons would be that there is no bathtub - only shower, and no air conditioning, however it was not super necessary during our September stay. I wish they had a hot tub on site as well. We did climb the Gros Piton, fyi.. a guide is required - very hard hike - worth the challenge though! Fond Doux's front desk staff will arrange all your transportation and you just choose what activities you want to do or just stay on the plantation because there's a couple days worth of fun there too. We went during their slow season. We felt like we had the place to ourselves, but with still great service. Overall, I would highly recommend Fond Doux for the service, scenic paradise, food, pools and price for all travelers: families, romantic or friends.

We live on the island of St.Lucia and one would therefore expect us to be jaded by all the beauty. We thought we'd seen it all, but a weekend at Fond Doux changed our minds. You have to experience Fond Doux to understand. The 'Sweet Valley' takes you back to nature, to your spirit. Going to bed in the Avocado cottage to the nocturnal symphony of the tiny frogs and myriad insects, then awaking after a restful sleep to the sound of rain on the roof and nearby trees; you look outside and see the leaves all wet and shiny, then you hear the birdsongs.
The breakfast of local fare like hot bakes and cocoa tea prepares you for the day of leisure or sightseeing. It's hard work, but somebody's got to do it. You visit a ruin on the plantation that takes you back to the days of warfare between the Neg Maron Freedom Fighters and the British. You realise that the owners, Eroline and Nyton, had probably been there before, and are now beating their swords into ploughshears. They run the small cocoa plantation and holiday resort, caring for their brainchild with obvious love and committment. The staff makes you feel welcome, catering to your needs without being intrusive. The cuisine is a gastronomic adventure. We were stunned when the waitress approached with what we took to be our second complimentary drink in a couple of champagne flutes. The cold soup, an exciting tomato and cucumber ensemble, floored us. That was on Friday night so it set the scene for a wonderful weekend of dining, relaxing, and renewing of our selves.
