“Cocoa Plantation Delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2014

We stayed for a week at the Fond Doux Plantation, on the island's west side, midway between the international airport and Castries, the largest town on St. Lucia. If you are looking to be in a beachside, resort hotel, this is not the place for you. However, if you'd like a unique experience in a tropical forest environment while staying in a hillside cottage with friendly staff, then this is the ticket.

Fond Doux was once a cocoa plantation, but it still harvests a modest amount of cocoa and processes the beans on site. They make a cocoa stick that you can grind up to make hot chocolate. There a number of fruit and spice trees on the property that can be seen on a nice 1 hour plantation tour. If you've never seen where cocoa, cloves, mangos, bananas, oranges, grapefruit and a whole bunch more tropical foods come from, do take this tour. Hummingbirds and other local birds are in abundance.

Our package included breakfast which included their hot cocoa mixture. Eggs, toast, granola, hot cereal, fruit and coffee are included. There is also a nice restaurant for lunch and dinner. We had dinner there 3 nights and the meals were quite good and reasonably priced for St. Lucia. On some nights live entertainment is provided.

There are several hikes in the plantation, including one to a spectacular overlook of the Caribbean and the Petite Piton. The plantation is actually set between the Gros and Petit Pitons. The hotel also runs a shuttle to and from a nearby beach. The nearby town, Soufriere, is interesting. Definitely not a Caribbean tourist town with tee shirt and jewelry shops.

The staff is very friendly, open and knowledgeable. English is spoken and spoken well. The staff was easily able to arrange a trip for us to go on a day cruise to Martinique. There is also a free PC with Internet access. If you're on Hotmail, do have access to your secondary mail account as Microsoft blocks immediate access to your US Hotmail account until they send an access code to your other mail account.

The cabins are set in the tropical forest. Ours had two bedrooms, a living area and a small kitchen with a stove, microwave and refrigerator. We went to sleep each night with chirps from crickets, frogs and birds. Very relaxing environment.

About the only drawback was their advertised pool was really three small, round pools that are not heated nor do they have whirlpool jets. Lap swimming is not going to happen in these cascading sets of pools.

We were looking for a authentic St. Lucian experience. We got that and a whole bunch more. We'd return to Fond Doux if we visit St. Lucia again.

Room Tip: Any of the cabins should do.

We've just had a lovely 12 day stay at Fond Doux. It really was a holiday with a difference and a truly unique and remarkable place to stay, unlike anywhere we've ever been before. We were very lucky to sample 3 different cottages during our stay; Tree Top, Guava and Mango. All were wonderfully secluded and private, with all the comforts we could ask for and were very clean and well furnished. Each had a huge and very comfortable four poster bed complete with mosquito net and we slept very well, even enjoying the night time serenade provided by the tree frogs and crickets! The views from these cottages are outstanding; it really does feel like your own little piece of paradise as you sit on the porch and look over the lush landscape full of coconut trees, bananas, mango, cocoa pods and exotic plants and flowers, especially the vibrant lobster and crab claw plants, watching the humming birds and other wildlife (we loved the lizards)! Hillside Mango catches the sun during the morning and early afternoon and the refreshing plunge pool on the porch is a perfect way to cool down whilst still being able to take in the panoramic views in your own private space. We loved all the little different touches that each cottage had, and just little things like having candles so you can sit out in the evening and just look and listen, the fruit that kept appearing (the grapefruits were the juciest ever), the paintings on the walls by a local artist, the really comfortable rocking chairs on the porch of Guava, the lovely outdoor covered space by the plunge pool in Treetop, the outdoor shower in Mango. The staff were simply brilliant - I could name a few who stood out, but that would be unfair as everyone tried their best to make us feel so welcome; part of their family almost. So, thank you to everyone; the drivers, the reception staff, the people who served us and fed us, the room service staff, the gardeners, the lady in the shop, the security people and the owners who greeted us warmly and even invited us to drinks and nibbles around the pool (which was a great way to meet the other guests). The free shuttle to Sugar Beach is a great way to travel, and from there you can take a water taxi to other beaches or towns, as we did to Soufriere. Snorkelling at Sugar Beach was great. The Sunset Cruise with Mystic Man Tours was brilliant and seeing whales and dolphins was a bonus and will be very memorable. The hike up Gros Piton and the view from the top was well worth the sore knees the next day! The Tet Paul trek was also very good and it is reachable from Fond Doux on foot (about half-an-hour). We didn't rate the Sulphur Springs tour quite so highly and it wasn't for us. If you're looking for a perfect sanitised holiday in a smart hotel with all mod cons then maybe Fond Doux isn't for you, or if you have issues with walking on uneven paths and tackling steps then the hilltop cottages aren't for you. But if you want to stay in a place full of the character of St Lucia, run by St Lucian's who make you feel so very welcome, in a unique setting with marvellous views and luxurious cottages, I'd recommend it! Thank you Fond Doux for a truly memorable holiday!

Room Tip: Hilltop Mango has a sunny porch and a great view. Hilltop Guava is equally lovely but doesn't h...

We spent a week at Fond Doux and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you are looking for an all-inclusive, pampered resort on a beach, this place is not for you!! If you want a "real" experience, staying in a real cocoa plantation, run by residents and staff from St. Lucia, come to Fond Doux!!The property is a green/eco-friendly property. The staff was outstanding and we really enjoyed conversing with them about their island. We had a package that included our breakfast, several hikes, a trip to the Sulphur Springs and the Botanical gardens, a couples massage, one dinner and a sunset cruise. When we decided not to do the Piton hike, Katrina had several suggestions on what we could substitute with no problem. We stayed in Hilltop Coconut so we had great views and always a breeze. Since I am not a fan of air-conditioning, this was a wonderful experience. You need to be in pretty good physical shape to climb up the 50+ steps every day but these cottages had the best views and was well worth it. The meals were very good and since we love fresh fish and seafood we were pleased that there was always a fish choice for the main course. The drivers were informative as well. "Happiness", Gregor (who also has a great music group that performed one evening), Dennis and Marcus (who has a private cab/van) were all so hospitable and acted like we were paying to have private tour-guides (they were at no additional cost!!) All the waitstaff in the dining rooms were gracious and friendly. The massage was terrific. The best hike and view of the Pitons is from the Tet Paul trail AND the view from the trail on the plantation tour was also spectacular. Phillip hiked up that trail like he was walking on flat ground but patiently waited for us to catch up!! One comment on the hikes, if you do the rainforest hike to the waterfalls, be sure you have plenty of water with you and either sturdy walking shoes or hiking shoes because much of the trail was destroyed in the 2010 hurricane and it quite rough with LOTS of stairs down to the falls so do not do this trail if you are not in relatively good shape and can do stairs. We loved the experience and would recommend it to anyone who wants a "real" experience in a place that is not a "cookie-cutter" upscale resort,

Room Tip: The cottages with the best views are Hilltop Coconut, Mango, Guava, Treetop.

Fond Doux feels a bit tired and outdated now. One senses the owners have run out of interest - and possibly a cash injection too.
Most of the areas around the reception and dining felt like an extravagant garden centre; dark beams and hard furniture and the cottages themselves were also a little too shed-like. The bed, in our room at least, was annoyingly covered in bits of red blossom. An attempt at signaling a romantic retreat but in fact a simple strategy to disguise other shortcomings - badly maintained taps, poor lighting, etc.
On arrival we were taken to the bar for our free drink. 'Beware the hotelier's gift' as they say - a sure sign that other departments will fall short. We were led to a man on a stool and found ourselves shaking hands with him. A little formal we thought, for someone who we assumed was taking care of our bags. But as this didn't happen, we were at a loss. We weren't introduced and to this day we never did find out who he was. But apart from the drabness, perhaps the real irony of the 1960s 'cottage in the rainforest' concept were the pathways. Instead of a gentle wooden boardwalk in keeping with the forest surroundings , we were led down a track covered in porridge consistency concrete and illuminated by old bulkhead lights with a bamboo topping. The concrete created the roughest surface imaginable and at one point I grazed my foot - flip-flop friendly it certainly wasn't. A guy, who actually did help us with a fairly heavy bag, carried it on his shoulder rather than wheel it - "Anything to avoid the noise!", he pleaded. I knew how he felt.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!!

Dear MikeOsborne,

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate all guests’ feedback including criticisms as it is only with this feedback we can address our guests' concerns and work on ways of improvement. We wish to clarify some points highlighted in your review.

Your remarks are surprisingly subjective and puzzling.

You mentioned that the property is tired and outdated, are you implying that we should tear down our wooden buildings and put up modern structures? In England and other parts of the world there are many organizations that work to raise public awareness of the necessity to preserve ancient and historic buildings and in addition to promote the cultural value of these buildings. At Fond Doux Holiday Plantation we are current in preserving the integrity of our colonial heritage. Repeat guests have seen the gradual progressions; Fond Doux Holiday Plantation is indeed a labor of love.

We have not run out of interest and cash, we are indeed passionate about the sustainability of our plantation paradise as we would like it to be passed on to future generations which is why we have invested in the continuous planting of tropical flowers, fruit trees and the upgrading of the resort’s facilities. With only 12 cottages we have over 40 staff members from the neighboring communities. The public washrooms, pool area, and lobby were refurbished and we recently constructed the ‘circle of love” wedding gazebo. We put a lot of cash injections into our gardens, over 2000 plants of cocoa, bananas, and new flowers have been planted.

The website does speak for itself; we are not a garden centre but rather a plantation resort with acres of tropical flora and fauna. Persons escape their concrete jungle in these metropolitan countries to come and experience St.Lucia’s Authentic Heritage. As a green globe certified property, we do understand that Tourism makes a contribution to climate change which is why we are focusing our efforts on sustainable tourism and to also raise awareness to change our production, consumption, lifestyle patterns and to engage in sustainable and more eco friendly practices to help protect and save planet Earth.

It is puzzling that you would refer to our cottages as “shed like, we have received high praise and awards for the architectural design of our cottages; which included the recent Silver Magellan Award.

As an eco friendly property we make full use of the local bamboo and tropical hardwood which is being featured in our cottages and around the property; they are all designed and hand crafted locally. All our cottages were renovated during our closure last September. Daily maintenance checks are conducted; however we will relook at the lighting and the taps.

All hotels in the Caribbean offer a welcome complimentary drink; it is not a “free drink”. We offer quite a lot of “free gifts” or complimentary extras such as Wi-Fi, full breakfast, beach shuttle, plantation tour, fruits, flowers and room amenities.

It is automatic that all guests are introduced to the owners upon arrival at the hotel and this was actually one of us you shook hands with. We are astonished that you would come to the conclusion that the person whom you met at the bar (owner) would be the one taking care of your bags- why would one come up with that conclusion, when the luggage is being handled at reception? On the contrary we still live on property and throughout the course of the day we meet with our guests including the weekly manager’s cocktail. We are on property for at least 50 weeks until when we take our annual vacation. We have an intrinsic Caribbean hospitality and friendliness that we cannot change. We are questioning whether we should change based on the subjective opinion of one traveler.

Due to torrential rain, all the top hotels in Soufriere have concrete pathways for safety and maintenance purposes.

It is realized that we simply cannot please everyone - nor is Fond Doux Holiday Plantation or even St. Lucia for everyone – as has been stated by many content reviewers on this website in the past. Fond Doux Holiday Plantation is best suited for the soft-adventure traveler who seeks off-the-beaten path natural adventure/attractions, authentic Caribbean cultural experiences and comfortable accommodations. Our facilities and activities attempt to immerse adventure seeking guests in pure nature while still providing the comfort of hot water, comfortable beds, fine organic cuisine, relaxing massages, and highly knowledgeable and trained tour guides and friendly staff.

We have always reiterated that in the event that a guest is unhappy or dissatisfied then they have the option to check out and we would offer our assistance in finding alternative accommodation.

Based on your feedback from your guest questionnaire there was no sign of any dissatisfaction during your stay. We are certain that had you been more precise about your vacation experience, perhaps we would have been able to help create a better holiday experience.

Best Regards,
Eroline and Lyton Lamontagne

We just come back from from 7 days at Fond Doux and it will be a vacation to remember. The cottage we stayed in was the Avacado. It was hidden in the middle of the forest and we did not see or hear anyone except the tree frogs, birds and crickets. i did make a special request to have groceries delivered so my kids and i could stay in our kitchen for some dinners and we received excellent service. The staff and owners go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and at home. Excellent excursions were offered at very affordable rates. Breakfast was included with our cottage and we had the treat of every day eating by beautiful surrounding outdoors with helpful breakfast staff enjoying local breads, fruit, eggs. The shuttle service to the local beaches worked out well. The drivers provided lots of information as they drove you. Sugar Beach is the prefered location the shuttles brought you a short 10 min drive.
We went to the beach most days as the pools on the property are attactive with a stunning view of the valley but small. Not really for swiming... more for a quick plunge.
The plantation itself is very interesting with all the variety of plants and items grown on the property. I do suggest you take the plantation tour.
The Avacado cottage had constant breeze with the great design of the fret work screens. No matter what room you were in there was a great sight line of the forrest that surrounded you. we did have bug nets over the beds, but we did not see more then 6 bugs all week.
If we returned to St Lucia we would definately stay at Fond Doux again.
Thanks for a great memory.

I've just returned from a 5 night stay at Fond Doux on a surprise trip for my fiancee's birthday. The trip and my selection of accommodation could not have been more perfect. The privacy and tranquility of the property is unparalleled. For the majority of the trip, we enjoyed total privacy (even including on site meals) and the grounds and cottages are stunning. We took advantage of one of the hilltop cottages (mango) with amazing views, private plunge pool and a gorgeous outdoor shower. Outside of the private setting, cozy cottage and lush surroundings, the staff at Fond Doux really sets it apart. Brace yourself, I have a lot of praise to sing about the wonderful people who are dedicated to making your experience memorable.

It starts with the girls in the front office. I was in contact with Karan, Eugenia and Tracy upon making reservations. I was amazed at their response time to the many inquiries I had before the trip. I had sent emails to them, some at 6am and others at 9pm, and without exception they replied within 10 minutes. I'm still not quite sure how they do it but I appreciated their responsiveness and they were so helpful when our original flight to St Lucia was cancelled due to a blizzard in Boston. They took away any and all concerns I had.

Kendall, the bartender, took great care of us and was always good for a laugh for our pre-dinner drinks. Regina and the other servers at the in house restaurants were attentive and accommodating as well.

Katrina, who handles all of you off site excursions is amazing. On our first day there, I decided I wanted to take a private boat to Anse Mamin from Sugar Beach. I told Katrina just as we arrived to the front office (5 minutes before the free shuttle arrived to take us to Sugar Beach). She immediately hopped on her mobile phone and haggled with 3 different boat providers until she got us the price we wanted to pay. The private boat was waiting for us when we arrived at Sugar Beach just 10 minutes later!

Breakfast every morning was great. Evancia and Lusca also delivered top notch service. One morning, I was struggling to get sugar out of a packet for the amazing cocoa tea and before I knew it, a separate dish of sugar appeared on the table to ease my difficulty.

Gregor picked us up from the airport. Later in our trip, he made an appearance as the keyboardist for a great live band that played at the onsite restaurant!

Dennis and Phillip took us on the Tet Paul hike (HIGHLY recommended). Dennis was a great tour guide and told us everything about the flora on our way up to what is easily the most beautiful view in the Caribbean.

Fond Doux is a special place where you can get up close and personal with nature and stay away from the crowds when you are on vacation. All this while still having all the comforts of home and easy access to beautiful beaches and hiking. In case you can't tell already, I give it my highest recommendation for a romantic and relaxing getaway.

A few recommendations:
1. Opt for the hilltop cottages- outdoor showers, more privacy and amazing views
2. Go for the all inclusive- meals were outstanding and it was nice to drink and eat to hearts content
3. Take a Boat trip to Anse Mamin- gorgeous and secluded beach a short boat ride from where ou will be dropped by FD's free shuttle. The boat ride itself is memorable with great views of Pitons and the restaurant on Anse Mamin, while pricy, is well worth it.
4. Take a Sunset hike on Tet Paul Trail (maybe a few times!- game changer!)

BR,
Suren

UNIQUE SLICE OF PARADISE REVIEW MOST APPRECIATED!!

Dear Suren77,

Thank you for sharing your review with us, it sure did put a smile on our faces. We are thrilled that you had such a memorable stay and thank you for having chosen our plantation paradise as a surprise trip in celebration of your fiancees birthday.

Our property is indeed unique and special in every way and we are happy that you too share the same sentiments. Too often visitors forget that they are on vacation and neglect to appreciate the beauty of the island and the culture of the people. We are delighted that you took the time to discover our property and that you connected with the team here at Fond Doux; part of our efforts is to create an atmosphere of relaxation and enjoyment of the simple pleasures of life- which may be sitting on your cottage porch, taking in the tropical breezes and listening to the sweet sounds of mother nature. What else could be better than that?

We do believe in the saying “first impressions are lasting” and so we try our best to ensure that all enquires are attended to immediately as we do understand that we live in a fast paced world full of latest technologies.
We are pleased that you found our facilities comfortable and accommodating, and that you took the time to mention several of the team members that impacted your stay positively. We will certainly pass on your encouraging feedback to them and commend them for delivering another amazing experience.

Thank you for your wonderful comments and we are positive that your review will act as a guide for potential travelers to both Saint Lucia and our plantation paradise.

We look forward to welcoming you back to paradise; we will be waiting with smiling faces and arms wide open.

We would go back to Fond Doux again at the drop of a hat. I can't really remember when a holiday experience has been so perfect and so complete. The staff have to rate as some of the most cheerful and friendly I have ever experienced and you know that their kindness is genuine, it just emanates from them as an unalloyed joyfulness.

The plantation is a garden of Eden with lush growth producing most of the fruit and vegetables one eats during ones stay. Food cannot have traveled much shorter a distance to find its way on to your table. The sweetness of the fruits at breakfast time is something that will stay with me forever. I have NEVER tasted lemons or grapefruit like that.

The rooms are wonderful, secluded and relaxing. They are so tucked away in the lush greenery that you almost feel you are the only one there. The pool area is so pretty and with adequate shade from the gazebo should you need it.

Lytton and Eroline were perfect hosts. I can't think of more welcoming owners. They are proud of what they have and what they have achieved and they have every right to be. This resort is a gold standard for the hospitality industry in St Lucia.

The guided plantation walk is well worth while in order to marvel at the number of plants and trees that grow there. Have you ever seen a nutmeg tree? You will here. Ever seen a cinnamon tree? You will here.

I'd give it 6 stars if I could.
