“fantastic honeymoon”
Reviewed June 2, 2007

We traveled to crystals for our honeymoon the first week in May. This is my first time booking a trip based on tripadvisor research and we couldn't have had a better experience. I recommend booking directly with the property thru Monica. We used a travel agent and I basically ended up still talking with monica because our travel agent did not know anything about the property.

So Monica can arrange a great rate for Jeep Rental-Highly recommend you rent a vehicle if you plan to sight see. Driving was fairly easy once you become accustomed to the topsy turny roads. We used our vehicle every day and arranged to have it picked up from the airport when we departed. Again Monica will help with all of this.

We stayed in Callabash...lots of pics on here of that new cottage. It was simply fabulous. There cabins have air-conditioning although we did not use it because of the cool breezes in the evening. we did use the mosquito netting around the bed since there were no screens. No bug problems whatsoever...i think i get more bit up in ohio : )

There is housekeeping service daily which comes in and cleans the place like magic-we actually never saw them. Another great feature is they stock yoour cabin with drinking water for free everyday which we took with us as it is so hot there you need to drink lots of water. that saved us alot of money,

ONe great highlight was the treehouse bar-=where guests are invited most nights for a drink or two and to meet with the other guests and MOnica and exchange their experiences and recommend places to visit. we found this to be a favorite part of our trip. I'm not sure what the other couple was complaining about the noise as they were guests during our stay and i can only think of one night where there could have been noise (people there) past 10pm. but they never came to happy hour either. we met another wonderful couple on their honeymoon: Jamie and Amy-hi and thanks for a great time!

martin is very musical and he often entertains the group with song. and monica even cooked us dinner on our first night there which was a delicious blessing after a 12 hour trip.

we ate in the various local restaurants....The Still is excellent for lunch...we thought the hummingbird was so-so on our two experiences there. We also ate at the Mango Tree, Captain Hooks-local joint-good cheap fare. We also enjoyed La Haut which is the closest and I felt best food for the money besides the Still.

We recommend the massage by johan. He is very knowledgeable and comes to your villa for your massage. very professional-my husband was nervous as it was his first, and he loved it! he makes his own oils-better than any spa i have ever visited.

We also recommend the Scuba Experience in Soufriere. It is next to the still we did the intro course and it was the favorite of our trip. They are wonderful as it was our fist time.

My husband is a cop, and he remarked at how safe -he was surprised-it was there. We were smart about our travels but experienced nothing but kindness from the people of st lucia. we did not give money to anyone who asked except the one guy in town who gave us directions.

the grocery in town has limited supply. we cooked out one night which was fun. the fresh bread is delicious! martin went in to town at 6am when we asked where to get some...this is the kind of personalized service here.

I felt more like i was staying in a bed and breakfast type spot with friends than a paying guest at a hotel.
If you are looking to be a number and blend in and not be friendly with others this may not be the place for you as it may ruin it for the rest of us!

we had no problem with privacy. plenty of privacy. Pretty much walk around in your villa/patio naked privacy. they are working on other villas be we did not find the noise too loud. we left in the late morning and returned in the early afternoon after lunch and sightseeing and were not disturbed.

This was the perfect honeymoon for my husband and i.
we enjoyed getting a true taste of st lucia-which we would not have gotten at a flagship resort full of annoying tourists-which was the only negative-american tourists can be the worst :)

we loved the adventure element of being in a villa with a mango tree growing out if it, sleeping with all windows and doors open listening to tree frogs and crickets, and rising with the sunshine.

we loved that it was laid back environment that helped us unwind.
Definately do the rainforest hike and plantation lunch-the food is some of the best on the island. it is on wednesdays.

the snorkle-sail was also fun....snorkel before you scuba...you will appreciate it more that way.

we loved that we made friends with monica and martin and plan to keep in touch and return.

the beach at anse chastanet is nice....the employees there are not so nice......kinda snobby and the place really isn't all that super nice - we where glad we did not stay there. we preferred the beach and service at Ti Kaye which is half way up the island near nothing but a great day trip.

it will forever be a memory that is ours to share with other couples that could only say they got to eat alot on their "all inclusive vacation" they didn't meet a soul, or experience a new culture. we are forever in love with st lucia and it's wonderful people. we will be back !

We spent two weeks in Coco Palm in May 2007 and our booking was highly influenced by the superb and totally uncritical reviews on TripAdvisor.
Our first impressions were excellent, Monica arranged very reasonably priced car hire and we were met at the airport and driven back to Crystals.
There is no doubt that Monica & Martin are very welcoming, helpful and accomodating and even lent us a pay as u go mobile phone which was much appreciated.
The setting of Crystals is excellent, with wonderful views all around and very well placed for visiting the main attractions on the island including great beaches at Anse Chastanet and Jalousie (wonderful snorkelling at both also).
I would say it is absolutely essential that you hire a vehicle if staying at Crystals and a 4 wheel drive is also essential on St Lucia not least because of the state of the long driveway up to Crystals which many will find rather taxing. Many of the roads on St Lucia are very, very steep in the South, some of these are concrete and when it rains (which it does) they are impassable without 4 wheel drive due to lack of grip.
Whilst others have praised the bar (recently constructed) - we found this to prove to be a nuisance particularly if you are staying in Coco Palm which it is adjacent to. We chose Crystals because we wanted peace and quiet but the (apparently free) bar which on occasions stayed open until the small hours seemed to be too attractive to some of Crystals clients and certainly disturbed our peace and quiet. It seemed totally out of place to us, if you want that sort of thing why stay at Crystals?!
Whilst not wishing to appear over critical some of the furniture and furnishings are more influenced by design than function - an example being the chairs on our verandah which looked great but were uncomfortable to use. The lighting in the kitchen is very poor if you are trying to cook after 6.30pm. On a plus side the bed (very large) was excellent and very comfortable. The jacuzzi was one of the biggest disappointments - it is the most uninviting jacuzzi we have ever seen, with a few inches of water (not even covering the jets) and in a very bad state of repair. Needless to say we never used it and we love jacuzzis!
If you adore dogs you might also not mind being disturbed by incessantly barking dogs on numerous occasions - we did mind. If you do stay in Coco Palm check the smoke detector works as it had no battery when we were there and being a completely timber framed dwelling fire risks should not be underestimated.
Nobody else has mentioned the building works going on both at Crystals and at a visible adjacent property. Whilst not overly disturbing and certainly Monica tries to ensure that disturbance to guests is kept to a minimum, these do however detract from Crystals being an idyllic holiday setting.
We would recommend you do the rain forest walk arranged on a Wednesday by Monica using one of her employees as a guide, good walking shoes strongly recommended, you drive to the forest (in your vehicle) pay for a permit 25ec dollars each person(I think) and then walk for approx 45 mins to a waterfall with approx 1 hour walk back (uphill). No need to be incredibly fit but it is moderately strenuous although not too bad as you are shaded from the sun most of the time. Afterwards you go to the Fond Doux estate for lunch which cost 40ec dollars each and you get to have a brief look around the estate - we didn't think the lunch was great. Add on 10 or 20 ec dollars each as tip for Ras the guide.
Our top recommendation for a place to eat is Debbies (Monica will tell you where it is) - by far the best meal we had on the Island and incredible value for money - do not have a starter as the main course comes with 10 dishes of vegetables and the desserts are sublime.
This was our first holiday on St Lucia and we loved it and we are sure you will also. I am sure some of our criticisms of Crystals might irritate some of those who have put contibutions on TripAdvisor but I think it is important to tell it how you see it.

To start out, we had a wonderful time! We stayed in the Papaya cottage which has a million dollar panoramic view overlooking the iconic Pitons, the sea, the rain forest and the volcano.

Martin and Monica are very generous hosts and we consider them friends now. Most nights ended with guests, Monica, Martin and their friends meeting in Martin’s tree-top bar to discuss the day’s adventures. Martin’s rum punch and music lead to a very comfortable relaxing experience. This is one of the nicest features of Crystals and separates it from other Inns. It does not take long before everyone feels like friends.

•Rent a jeep to explore. We recommend Benny (Monica can arrange) with airport transport. He met us on arrival & drove us back for departure. Be prepared for customs in and security out – very slow.
•Be aware that the area is mountainous and there are many hairpin turns that require very slow speeds to negotiate. This is a good thing as it not uncommon to round a turn and encounter goats, cows or horses, or men with machetes standing in the road. We quickly learned that they were not axe murderers but locals harvesting mangos . In Soufriere, the roads are very narrow and always congested. The open storm drains on the sides are deep and worried me as I squeezed around traffic (on the wrong side). It takes about 2-3 days to get used to driving on the left side (unless you are English, then it takes a lifetime).
•Experience Soufriere . Shop at the market. Drink Pitons in town. Ice is available at the gas station if you require it.
Crystals is an incredible alternative to the generic all-inclusive resort. We hope to return for another visit in the future.

I'd like to thank Monica & Martin for their hospitality they went out of their way to help us with anything we ask, both while we where staying there and before we left home via e-mail. My wife & I stayed at Crystals for 7 days in mid Feb. 2007 everything went according to plan. The rental Jeep Co. was @ the airport on time to pick us up and drive us to Crystals,Del. the Jeep. These are all things Monica set up on her own to make our stay more enjoyable. Upon arrival we were given an upgrade from the Mango to the Coco Palm @ NC. These cottage's are all very unique, set on a hillside above the town of Soufriere (5-10 min.) the scenery is wonderful. Monica's flair for decorating really comes thru in each of these cottage's my wife and I could not have been more pleased. Another real gem of an idea is the cocktail time @ 7:00 each night, it's a time to get together with the other guest get to know them, where their from and to share idea's on what to do on the Island, I hope they never change this event. We where there on St. Lucia's Independance Day, knowing that the restaurant's were all closed for the day, Monica put together a luncheon for the guest that where there at the time which were 3 couple's and herself & Martin. She did this all because we where her guest. When you go Crystal's you become part of a family , a long time friend. Thank You Monica & Martin we will be back! Mark&Peggy

I visited Crystals in January for some some rest and relaxtion in the midst of a hectic business trip. As per my last visit, the welcome was warm yet highly professional. Now with a bar, built in the mango trees, you are able to de-stress from the outside world from moment you arrive. The new cottage, Calabash, has a wonderful pool and waterfall, and is decorated in a highly distinctive way. Despite being fully booked I was able to enjoy the tranquility of the views of the Pitons yet benefit from the hospitality of Monica and Martin, the owners, who advised on local restaurants and organised a couple of trips for me. It also testament to their success that there were returnee guests during my stay, proof that Crystals really has hit the mark.
