We stayed for eight nights in November/December 2013 and loved La Haut Plantation. We didn't notice the office when we first arrived so headed straight to the restaurant/bar area. The restaurant manager Thecla was really welcoming and before taking us up to the office to register, offered us a complimentary rum punch. It was the sort of reception every traveller wants after a 16-hour journey and much appreciated.

It's rare for a room to look as good as it does in photos on a website, but when Cindi took us to our cashew room (premier vista room) it really was even more lovely than it looks on La Haut's website. The room was extremely spacious and the bed very comfortable. At peak temperature times, I'd imagine it would be a bit hot, but for November/December temperatures, we found the room comfortable without air conditioning.

Although we'd planned to eat out and to walk to Soufriere in the evenings and get a taxi back, we ended up dining in La Haut's restaurant every evening. We enjoyed cocktails on our balcony and wine with our meal without having the expense of using taxis. Although we ordered the same dishes a couple of times (fish and pork were great!), they were always served with different side dishes. Our waitress Melissa made us most welcome, as did all her colleagues on her night off. We loved trying out local dishes such as plantain pie. Compared to prices in other restaurants we had lunch in/checked out, La Haut's prices were very reasonable by St Lucia standards. It did sometimes take a while for the freshly cooked food to arrive, but we were happy to enjoy the lovely atmosphere in the restaurant and to get food which was piping hot (in temperature, not spice!). The complimentary garlic bread which was regularly offered kept hunger at bay.

As other reviewers have said, breakfast was great, especially on days on which Johhny cakes were served warm:) Our eggs were always cooked to perfection and were clearly freshly made. It was sometimes hard to drag ourselves away from the stunning morning views of the Pietons.

The views from the owner's infinity pool really are breathtaking. We were lucky to have their pool to ourselves on one occasion and would have loved to have been able to see the sunset from there every night.

As some other recent reviewers have commented, there were a few things which were not working consistently throughout our stay e.g. tv and wifi reception in our bedroom, but as we were not planning on watching tv and were able to get wifi in the bar area, it didn't bother us. The relaxed environment, stunning views, lovely staff and food, and beautiful grounds more than made up for minor inconveniences. We loved the walk up to the restaurant area each morning/evening, however, for those with mobility issues, the rooms nearest the restaurant would be a better option.

We hired a car so didn't take advantage of the hotel's shuttle service to Soufriere/Anse Chastanet. As we live in a part of the world where there are rough forest roads, we didn't find the roads in St Lucia a problem, however, those used to city roads might find the tracks to beaches such as Anse Chastanet and Anse Cochon a bit daunting. The main roads are a bit windy (as you'd expect), however they were in better condition than some of the roads we drove on in Tortola.

We enjoyed our visits to the beaches at Anse Mamin, Anse Cochon, Anse Chastenet and Jalousie and felt welcome on them all (some other reviewers seem to have had issues when visiting Anse Mamin and Jalousie). It's a shame that no sun beds are available for rental at Anse Mamin and that it's so pricey to hire them at other beaches, however, we liked having the facilities so were happy to pay for them. Compared to our other Caribbean island experiences, the beaches we spent time on in St Lucia were not as nice and much busier, however, the amazing scenery of St Lucia was well worth seeing. We intended to spend more time at the beaches in the north, but only saw a little of the Atlantic beaches (which were lovely).

We hope to return to La Haut at some point in the not too distant future. We'd definitely recommend it to anyone who loves stunning views, a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and isn't expecting a luxury environment.

Visiting St Lucia felt more of a real Caribbean experience than visits we have enjoyed to St Johns, Tortola and Barbados. The only downside was having a couple of experiences of locals running out in front of the car on the outskirts of Soufriere to get us to stop, and then asking us to donate to 'local cricket charity matches' in what felt like quite a threatening way, or giving us directions we didn't need (for a fee). This didn't happen to us when driving in any other towns/villages in St Lucia. Once we 'knew the routine' we drove on without stopping and therefore avoided the unwelcome hassle. When walking through Soufriere during the day, we'd lots of people offering to give us information (for a fee) or asking us if we wanted taxis. This put us off visiting the town at night. When on holiday, we normally like to walk from our hotel to the nearest town and enjoy dining in local restaurants. We knew La Haut was quite a bit out of town, but as we've stayed in similar locations on other islands, and enjoy hiking, so weren't put off by the long walk to town. However, as we like to completely chill out when on holiday, we decided to avoid spending much time in Soufriere - a shame, as from reading others' reviews, it looks as if there are some good restaurants/bars there.

Room Tip: We loved our cashew room view

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in November after having spent four nights at Ti Kaye resort. Let me reiterate all the positive reviews here: the location is simply breathtaking, the views are outstanding, the food in the restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced by St. Lucian standards (and beat Ti Kaye's restaurant hands down!) and staff are friendly and helpful. The shuttle service to Anse Chastenet beach is great.
We enjoyed the upper swimming pool which we had to ourselves while staying there. We went to use the owner's infinity pool once - mainly for the sunset views. There were only four sunbeds there and we felt we were positively intruding on somebody else's property. We were told repeatedly that the owner didn't mind but I really do not want to have to drapse through somebody's living room and sit on their upholstered terrace chairs in my wet bikini.... maybe that's just us.
What was somewhat disappointing was the state of our room. We rented the free-standing cottage next to the main house which allegedly was used by the owners before they built their house down the hillside (they definitely went up in the world!) The cottage has a lovely view from the large balcony and is completely self-catering with a kitchenette downstairs (which we did not use - it was poorly equipped). What was less impressive was that nothing worked - the TV was broken (that's fine, we don't need it on holiday), the wifi connection did not work (it did in other locations on the property), the ceiling fan did not work (and would have interfered with the badly torn mosquito net at any rate) and there is no air-conditioning so all we had to keep the air circulating was one stand-up fan. Most disturbingly, there were mushrooms growing out of the base of the toilet on our last day - three big yellow ones... I know we were going for a "rustic" option and did not expect the same standard as we had in Ti Kaye. However, for over $200/night I think it is reasonable to expect at least basic functionality and cleanliness. The mosquito net urgently needs replacing (I got eaten alive the first night we were there despite the net and mosquito spray provided) and the furniture and furnishing could really do with a face-lift.
All in all, La Haut is lovely for a few days and we would thoroughly recommend it - just make sure you go for an upgraded, refurbished room.

Don't regret staying at La Haut- perfect location to visit south the island- loved the Plantation vibe quite well maintained - the views over the Pitons are spectaculars .
My only concern is that the rooms were very ages , lots of Mosquitos and also a cockroach found in the shower ( alive ) . They was a leak in the ceiling of our bathroom during our stay which was quite bad actually so they should definitely invest on refurbishing the place as it is worth it in view of the scenery and the vegetation - people were ok, not great service though .

The facilities and the staff at LaHaut are great. All the staff were friendly and courteous. The mattress was outstanding, which made sleeping wonderful. The kitchenette in the room was great to have. The views of the Caribbean Sea and the Piton mountains are magnificent. The van service to the beach and other nearby locations was a great plus. The breakfast was super. I definintely plan to return to La Haut Plantation.

I will go back there as it will very memorable, would recommend anyone to this place, a remarkable place to stay.

Our plane was 3 hours late getting in from the states and we were unable to find the facilities we had booked in the dark. We were able to get a room for the night at La Haut. We had a beautiful suite for the night. The next morning we were thrilled with the view of the Pitons and after walking the grounds enjoyed an excellent breakfast. Wished we could have stayed longer.

La Haut or Le Haut literally means "the height" in Patois, a French dialect that is commonly spoken by St. Lucians. La Haut sits on a hill overlooking Soufriere, one of the oldest towns in St Lucia.Part of a 52-acre former coconut and cocoa estate, the main Guest House possesses a unique history. Nearly 100 years old, the main guesthouse was originally a cocoa house used for fermenting and drying cocoa beans hand-picked on the estate. In 1995, the building was converted and refurbished into a 6-room guesthouse. The nearby cottage was a former copra house where coconuts were once processed.Although the rich aroma of cocoa beans no longer wafts through the air, at La Haut you can enjoy the perfume-scented, tropical fauna or the salty breeze that blows off the Caribbean Sea. ... more   less
