Everyone at this small home like resort was kind, helpful and considerate. We enjoyed the privacy, the food was excellent,( great breakfast included) wait staff efficient, hotel staff most helpful, our room clean, and the pools most refreshing. Taxi and concierge services available. Be sure to take advantage of the on site tour.

We stayed in a Premium Vista room (Cashew #3) and it was exactly as expected per their website and pictures. Nice room, huge balcony, good food and priceless views from room and restaurant! There are many more upscale (and far more expensive) resorts in the area but La Haut has one of the best views. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The property, with animals all around, is kind of quirky but fun, and with only 13 rooms is more like a B&B than a "resort". Agree with other posts about some rough edges and potential to improve, my guess is it is improving and they are investing in it, not that it is getting run-down. They certainly could start with a nicer sign on the road and more lighting on the property. Although La Haut isn't inexpensive, we checked out the other larger resorts in the area and found them to be much more up-scale and far more expensive. If you want a smaller property and amazing views this is the spot, if you want fancy and on the beach this isn't for you.

Room Tip: Premium Vista rooms have best view and huge balconies, also closer to the infinity pool which is far...

We just returned from a stay at La Haut where we had the most memorable experience especially celebrating our 25th anniversary. We cannot adequately express how much we were made to feel right at home by the staff who became family by the end of our stay. We stayed in the main house and were very happy with the accommodations and hospitality by everyone at the plantation. There is NO way the view of the Pitons can be beat either. The true charm of St. Lucia is exemplified by La Haut Plantation, and we have absolutely no doubt about returning here upon a second visit to St. Lucia.

We just got back from a pre-wedding-moon (hehe love that) and stayed four nights at La Haut up in the hills of Soufriere. I haven't written a review in a while but will try to keep it quick and to the point (and objective/comparative to any other places I know in St Lucia)...

The property/grounds:
--The plantation is up on the hills looking down on most of Soufriere, which is nice. You get breathtaking views of the Pitons, the village below, and the ocean of course. In all directions you are surrounded by lush rain-forest type of wildlife, and you have a handful of friendly livestock (cows, donkeys, etc). Each part of the plantation (different lodging options) are in their own separate houses/units. You walk along one winding driveway which connects them. We stayed in Cashew houses, right next to the owners house. We liked it a lot.

The swimming pools/views:
--Two pools, one up by the restaurant, one all way at bottom in owner's house backyard. Both nice, the owner's house one is infinity pool and amazing view. Also is usually empty, but you have to walk through his front yard and through the open-air house. Bit weird feeling to do. The restaurant one is also nice, but right next to where people may be having breakfast/lunch. Views of Pitons are great throughout the property.

The restaurant/food:
--We had breakfast every morning here (included), and also ate dinner here twice. We really liked the food, it was quite good. Our favorite dish was the seafood crepes, but also I had fresh fish which was cooked nicely. The appetizers also were pleasing, and breakfast each morning was very thorough. Fresh local fruits (and some expected fruits) along with fresh local juice and choice of coffee or "cocoa tea", along with your actual eggs or French toast. All was tasty.

The people/service:
--The employees at La Haut are very, very nice, by end of the trip we wanted to make sure to say good-bye to each of them. The driver, security guard, office staff, and restaurant staff (new chef was very nice, came out to chat with us after a long dinner shift) were all great.

The little things/touches:
+bed was nice, had this nice mosquito net that you could wrap the whole bed in. Not needed so much, just don't leave doors open overnight and you'll be fine.
+Flower petals all over the place when we checked in, which was nice.
+The cashew rooms were huge, nice and spacious. Amazing balcony to spend time on with the view.
-When checking in, they told us we would have to switch rooms for two nights for some other people to come use our room. They tried to drive us 5 mins up the road to some other rented property. We of course did not accept this, and resumed our happy vacation. But was so weird that they even asked this of us. Some other "frequent" visitors had a big group, guess they wanted to forklift us. SO weird. But anyway, we avoided that weirdness and it was not an issue after that.

Other useful pointers:
1) The property is one that is more authentic, jungle-feeling, real-deal feeling, with touches of above-average niceties. But it is not fully that luxurious feel that some people may be expecting or "needing". But it is quite close. I actually think that the things some may think "it is missing" is what makes it more enjoyable. Less fluff and man-made things, and more real-deal jungle plantation style enjoyment.

2) Driving to the place, and to nearby other things. The roads in St Lucia, in my opinion, are an eye opener. Drive on left side of road, steering wheel on right side of car (for me being from USA took bit getting used to). More importantly, the roads (most of them) are all single-lane thickness and are all two-way traffic. Yikes! Also many of the smaller village areas have downright scary/steep paved paths (these are roads??) to get to even the most exclusive and expensive properties. Wow just wow, you'll just have to see it. But once you get used to it, it's OK if you're a good drive and/or adventurous. We had a car the whole time and while every day there was a bit of scary moments, we liked the freedom to go where/when we wanted.

3) The local people are nice! Everywhere. At some times, in the local villages, I have to admin I felt a bit wary as sometimes the vibe is bit urban and not as sophisticated as some tourism areas but whenever talking to anyone local, always they were quite nice and chill. :-)

We liked it there a lot, a few things that were on our "list" to check out didn't get to them, so if we ever go back, will drive again, maybe stay at La Haut again (unless we venture all the way up north), and totally recommend them for anywhere near the Soufriere area for you to stay at

Just an absolutely incredible view from the veranda of our room in the Cashew building. Incredibly comfortable beds. The presence of TVs in the room was actually a bit of a negative, since you could hear what your neighbor was watching word-for-word. I'd classify the food as good-but-not-great. The feel of a spread-out plantation with donkeys, cows, and chickens along with kitchenettes and spacious balconies would categorize La Haut as "rustic luxury." We did one excursion through the resort - a hike to Canaries waterfall with Paul - this was a wonderful mini-adventure that was the highlight of our trip.

This “resort” has definitely seen better days. An air of neglect prevails. The tone is set by the sign announcing the resort which has not seen a coat of paint in years. Everything is faded, scratched and worn, from the scruffy Reception office, to the rusting restaurant chairs that are too low for the tables, to the chipped swimming pool, to the old fashioned bathroom.

The place has unrealised potential. Our room was huge and included a mini kitchen area equipped with a fridge, a tiny sink, a kettle and a toaster. We had a fabulous view of the harbour and the Pitons from the enormous balcony. Flower petals were scattered everywhere to greet us on arrival.

But you sense the owners have lost interest. It’s evident from the detail: the mosquito net that’s not big enough for the bed; the packets of stale green tea; the liquid soap that has been there so long it has crystallised; the instant coffee at breakfast; the flatscreen TV with no signal; the missing light bulb on the long walk down the dark lane to our room; no phone; no iron. The predominately young staff is friendly but amateur.

Yet La Haut sure knows how to charge! For everything! It’s as expensive as a 4-star London hotel and –frankly – not worth it.

Also (although this is not their fault) we were assailed by loud reggae music drifting up from the harbour of Soufriere –all through every day and far into the night. And when the music stopped, the barking dogs took over.

Earlier in the week we stayed at Ti Kaye Village. It’s even more expensive than La Haut, but it’s in a different league – as regards infrastructure, facilities, food, welcome and service. The views are amazing there too – and the grounds and the pool are much better maintained.

La Haut is one of the most relaxing paces that i have stayed at. From the efficient and friendly check in to the casual buffet breakfast and the charming bedrooms. La Haut has an air of relaxation and you are in no doubt that you have "got away from it all" as soon as you arrive.
I cannot wait to return. Thank you La Haut Plantation!

La Haut or Le Haut literally means "the height" in Patois, a French dialect that is commonly spoken by St. Lucians. La Haut sits on a hill overlooking Soufriere, one of the oldest towns in St Lucia.Part of a 52-acre former coconut and cocoa estate, the main Guest House possesses a unique history. Nearly 100 years old, the main guesthouse was originally a cocoa house used for fermenting and drying cocoa beans hand-picked on the estate. In 1995, the building was converted and refurbished into a 6-room guesthouse. The nearby cottage was a former copra house where coconuts were once processed.Although the rich aroma of cocoa beans no longer wafts through the air, at La Haut you can enjoy the perfume-scented, tropical fauna or the salty breeze that blows off the Caribbean Sea. ... more   less
