“Only had the Sunday brunch but WHAT A BRUNCH! WHAT A VIEW!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

We had heard about the Sunday brunch at Ladera so we ventured there without a reservation on a Sunday around 1pm and were pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if there is a better view from any restaurant in St. Lucia. It was like hanging out over a cliff in a treefort....we got the table closest to the 'edge'. The buffet was $35/person and worth it. Seafood salad, pork stew, ribs, chicken, you name it. TONS of choices, all hot and delicious. The desserts were the same. Service was good, but not great. They had a local band of oldtimers playing traditional music throughout the brunch. After brunch you could wander downstairs and enjoy a cocktail with stunning views from the lounge area. The gift shop was pricey but had some cool stuff. I didn't get to investigate the cottages they have to stay in, but I would consider it on another trip. All in all, a GREAT Sunday at Ladera! Near the Sulpher Springs just mins from Soufriere.

This is the best resort my husband and I have ever stayed at...and we have stayed at a lot of resorts. It is a five star rating and all aspects were 5 star, including the food, the service, the cleanliness, the rooms, and the view. This resort has the most spectacular view on the whole island. The staff addresses you by name, so they must memorize who you are ahead of time. It was very nice.

The food and drinks were not cheap at this hotel, but were delicious. The in room plunge pools were fabulous and cleaned everyday. The rooms were truly spectacular and were better than what I expected. It was amazing to wake up every morning and look at the Pitons. We had no issues with bugs at all ...just a view moths and geckos were all we saw during the week. The netting over the bed keeps everything out anyways.

The location of this hotel is very close to many of the recommended nature excursions....Tet Paul, Diamond Botanical Falls, Drive in Volcano, Sulpher Springs, Ziplining. I would absolutely stay here again!

The views from Ladera were incredible, and really made our stay. Unfortunately the service was inconsistent and disappointing - at the restaurant (particularly the lower level), the pool and the housekeeping. Generally, the staff came across as polite but careless. We expected a high level of service based on hotel class and reviews. Here are a few examples of what happened. One night dinner service was excellent, the next night we waited over an hour for our food after ordering. Sometimes housekeeping was fine, but other times they forgot to replace towels, forgot to restock the complimentary water, left cleaning supplies around the room, etc. The worst housekeeping incident was when they threw away my husband's invisalign that was just sitting on the bathroom counter. Service at the pool was also inconsistent - half of the time there were no towels, and it took hours for them to be restocked (even after multiple requests from us, and other guests). We usually had to walk up to the restaurant to place an order. We had to ask 3 times, and waited almost an hour for an umbrella to be set up. I recognize that these are lots of little things, but by the end of the trip they really added up! We had to consistently ask for things that should have been done in the ordinary course, and it put a damper on our stay.

My husband and I returned from Ladera yesterday. It was simply amazing. I was almost upset that this trip really rivaled our honeymoon last June in Santorini! I chose this resort for the second half of our stay in St. Lucia; I wanted somewhere really special and unique as my husband is deploying to Afghanistan right after this trip.
I had booked the least expensive room (which in our eyes was still very expensive!) only to find we had been upgraded to a Hilltop Dream Suite (X2 was the exact room) as we were handed a delicious Ladera punch after a LONG and winding ride, coming from the North end of the island. Our room was two levels and had a heated plunge pool, and a magnificent view of both Pitons. The mini bar was stocked with water, soda, and Piton beer - they had a chilled bottle of champagne waiting for us, too! They supply you with ear plugs (which we didn't use - loved the sound of rain and frogs) and binoculars. It was rather close to the restaurant, so we did hear the band at night, but didn't mind because they were very good.
Service was great, the free shuttle to and from the beach was a plus (plan on being there three hours, or take a cab back on your own time). They also give you a cell phone to use on the island. The gym is nice...I had all intentions of using it, but never did...it's vacation after all.
The restaurant had some of the best food I've ever had. One time I did send something back because it was bland...but everything after that was delicious. Continental breakfast was included, and for only US$7 more you could get something in addition. I had the Island Seafood Eggs Benedict every single morning - shrimp, scallops, and conch...you cannot go wrong. We also ate at Boucan which is walking distance, and that was comparable in price but the food at Ladera was better. One night for dinner we just ordered and shared all the bar bites on the menu (6 bar bites, $6 each) and it was just enough, and less expensive. Our first dinner there with two drinks, an appetizer, two entrees and a dessert to share was $167 including the 10% service charge they add and the 8% tax.
Only con about St. Lucia in general is that it is so expensive to get around the island. We felt a little trapped sometimes not wanting to pay for a taxi. Our taxi from UVF to our first resort on the north end was $75, then $60 from that resort to Ladera, and $100 from Ladera to UVF. Renting a car is an option, but these roads are so full of hair-pin turns along the mountains, I would be terrified to drive here.
I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a romantic and relaxing stay. The pictures on their website do not even do it justice. You have to see it for yourself!

Room Tip: Hilltop Suites are amazing, they start with an "X." I would choose one with a higher numbe...

Ladera Resort was a wonderful haven of relaxation and peace. We went for the 2nd week of our honeymoon and we were completely thrilled with our stay at the hotel. Upon arrival we were welcomed with a lovely drink and met the owner who happened to be staying there. We were especially "lucky" however because unfortunately our plunge pool in our rainbow suite/superior room was not working properly and the owner went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make our stay a happy one by actually giving us her suite. It was a magnificent suite and totally unexpected but well appreciated! It made our stay all the more beautiful and unique!

Pros:
The staff of the hotel will bend over backwards to help you. They make reservations for you at all the restaurants and are truly there to take care of you. The Ladera rooms are each so unique and not one is alike. It was a once in a lifetime place to stay. The view are beyond incredible. It's also very easy to access! Most other hotels are down steep, windy, rocky roads and Ladera is very convenient.

Cons:
Dasheen Restaurant was very hit or miss and typically that feeling was caused more by the spotty service than the food. It is a very expensive restaurant (even by a Manhattan resident's standards) and one expects excellent service and food for these types of prices. Instead the service was beyond slow most of the time. For example, we were recommended to order the "Island Mixed Grill" one evening for dinner over a less expensive steak option. The Mixed Grill was the most expensive on the menu at $46 an entree however it only included 3 VERY small pieces of meat (literally one shrimp, one small lamb chop, and one small chicken cutlet) and it took more than an hour to be served. I ordered something slightly off the menu (I asked for no chicken in the Coconut Curry entree) and an hour later when i asked "how the food was coming," we were told that my curry was the reason for the delay. It is one thing if the cooking of the dishes needed to take that long (although i dont see how) but no one even came to check on us the entire time we were waiting. We had run out of drinks and we had to flag someone down from across the restaurant to request bread/crackers to tide us over until the meal arrived.

Regarding the surrounding area, the nearby town of Soufriere is a derelict little town that needs a serious makeover. Every time we went in to town we wanted to leave again. There was no where to hang out (there are no signs on most buildings and everything always looks closed or completely empty so you cant tell what type of establishment it is... or maybe if it's someone's living room even!). There was prime marina area but nothing but one restaurant to sit at. In general, you were immediately pegged as a tourist and accosted for money the moment you stepped out of the car.

Also because one didn't want to go into town, one was often relegated to the hotel restaurants. This was a bit restricting for us since you run out of options quickly and it's very expensive to eat at the hotels (around $150- 200 a meal for 2 with drinks)

The town of Vieux Fort was much more lovely and has a great beach by it with a cafe called Reef Cafe. Its worth the drive if you have a car!

Also Anse Chastenet was lovely too.

I went to Ladera a week before Xmas 2013 for my honeymoon.

The place is excellent and the view is nothing short of extraordinary. The service was fantastic and everyone was always really attentive with us!

As a final note, even if you are not lodged in the hotel is worth to visit it and have dinner/lunch in their restaurant.

The peace and tranquility of Ladera's magical spirit sweep you away from the outside world and embrace you in its paradise. The vast ocean view framed by the Pitons, the lush beautiful gardens and the impeccable service make this a one of a kind experience. Sleeping in the open air, sipping coffee while watching the sun rise and wading in your private pool, simple luxury in a day at Ladera, that I already miss. We ate daily at the restaurant which did not disappoint as well. The warmth of the staff at Ladera makes you feel like you are visiting old friends and old friends we shall be as we plan to return again and again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ladera is the pioneer of the open air three-walled concept in St. Lucia and has since been distinguished by a wide range of international publications, awards and accolades from Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Forbes Life Caribbean Travel and Life, Brides Magazine and countless others. Ladera was once part of Rabot Estate, one of Soufriere's oldest plantations, which still borders the resort. In the late 1960's a parcel of land was sold and developed into a small cluster of condominiums and christened Dasheene, named after the thousands of large, glossy-leafed dasheen plants (also known as elephant ears) harvested on the site. In 1982 it was transformed into a unique resort and changed hands a number of times before emerging as Ladera under the current private ownership. The mission has always been to offer an unparalleled guest experience that is quintessentially Saint Lucian, one that embraces the magnificent views and offers harmony with the surrounding natural beauty and rich bounty of the island. Today, that commitment to sumptuous authenticity is evident in everything from the innovative renderings of fresh local dishes at Dasheene restaurant, to the use of Caribbean timbers, stone and tile work used in the guestrooms and public areas. Yet it shines through most effectively with warm and welcoming Saint Lucian staff. ... more   less
