We stayed in Luxury Sugar Mill room 10 for 10 nights from 3 June. Having booked our trip several months ago and read the rave reviews, we wallowed in the anticipated delights ahead. Would Sugar Beach meet our high expectations? No...it far exceeded our dreams of luxury, indulgence, pampering, soporific ambience, stunning location and delightful staff. The best of welcomes with cool rum cocktails and cold, lavender towels, as we were escorted straight to our perfect room.
We normally self cater in the Caribbean and hire a car, so this was a total change, we feared boredom. No fear of that, spending our days snorkelling, kayaking, playing tennis, oh and copious amounts of chilling on the comfy sun loungers.
The beach is so beautiful and although small, never felt busy.
Thank you to all the staff who were exemplary, our butlers Nysan,(so attentive) Gus (the grin, watch out Hollywood). Gym pro Canice (oozing with energy ) and of course Sherman and Nathaniel, the perfect hosts.
Dining was always a treat and again the staff couldn't be more helpful. Anyone who claims otherwise should take a step back and look at themselves.
Varied artwork decorates all area's and is refreshingly eclectic, unlike the bland, safe displays at most hotels.
This holiday was a special treat and unlikely to be repeated, but if you get the chance GO and enjoy.

Room Tip: Sugar mill rooms are perfectly located, but if you don't mind beach users in front of you, the b...

It is very difficult to explain the Sugar Beach resort without visiting. From the moment we arrived we experienced nothing but 100% attentiveness and service, the 2 guys at reception were brilliant and they immediately made us feel at ease and relaxed, we went straight to our villa in the 300's and met our Butler (Swamed, Alex and Jason) who helped us settle in to paradise.

Having done our research we knew what to expect, but this surpassed all expectations. The villas are perfectly appointed with huge bathrooms, the worlds most comfortable led bed (I am not exaggerating) and the plunge pool was just incredible with views of both Pitons.

We found the shuttle service amazingly convenient with no more than 60seconds wait times for shuttles, our butlers made plans for off site reservations and excursions, and the beach staff were phenomenal!

Food at Bayside was well above par and the setting was stunning, we treated ourselves to 2 meals in the Great Room and both were exquisite. The Cane bar was great for a game of pool with a cocktail, and the Bayside Bar was a lovely way to let an evening roll by. Occasionally service here was a little slow, but hey - you are in paradise, chill out. It was probably more apparent given the move from Sandals where service if anything was a little too fast.

Selections for breakfast were well above par, the Burritto is well worth a try!!

Our butlers arranged for a private tour where we took in the Volcano, Sulphur Springs, Botanical Gardens, Sourfrier, and a bite to eat at the Beacon. We also went to Ladera for a meal and sunset cocktails one evening as well ad the Hotel Chocolate Bean to Bar tour, followed by a lovely meal there. We made plans before leaving the UK to spend a day with Congomon (Paul) which included a climb of Gros Piton, this was the highlight of our week and well worth doing (see separate review).

Overall this must be one of the most stunning resorts in the world. Staff remember your names everywhere you go, managers take an interest and come over to talk with you frequently, and the location, well the location has to be seen to be believed!

Truly paradise, will be hard to beat.

This resort has an amazing location. Situated on a beach between the Twin Pitons, it is one of the most beautiful places my partner and I have ever been. The visuals are stunning from every angle, and the gorgeous, immaculate landscaping only enhances the effect. The ocean, the mountains and the rain forest truly create a surreal environment.

We stayed in a Luxury Cottage (305) and loved it. The view of the sea and the Piton was breathtaking. The beds were uber comfortable, bathrooms luxurious, products top notch, and the AC excellent. The Nepresso machine was appreciated. There is complimentary water and Piton beer (loved it). And the plunge pool was so refreshing.

The pool was where we spent most days, and I'm still there in my dreams. Pitons, palm trees and rum drinks. Raise the red flag and whatever your heart desires can be yours. The infinity, water edged design made it comfortable to gather and gaze toward the water's horizon. Quite dreamy. If you are there by 10:30, you will have your choice of the king size (room for 2) loungers. Same is true for the beach cabanas. We tried the entire drink menu and our favorites: On the Beach and the Zombie (take care with that one).

The butter service was fast, friendly and professional. Shwarma, Alex and Jason took great care of us. Any request (ice, reservations, buggy rides) was a phone call away.

We enjoyed the dining at both the Bayside and the Great Room. Pants are required at the latter (as we found out), but worth putting on for the fine dining experience. The grilled Mahi Mahi was to die for, and the Piton beer battered fish burger was amazing. Check out the "hot sauce" too.

We were on the AI plan and ate b'fast, lunch and dinner every day. Loved being able to try everything on the menu! Breakfast was a particular treat. The cheeses and pastries and fresh juices! If you plan on eating and drinking to your heart's content, this is truly the way to go- especially if you like a few cocktails and wine with meals.

Don't forget to check out the Cane Bar (for rum lovers), the Late Night Bar and the Palm Court Lounge. Lots of cool art and sculpture abounds.

The beach is calm and beautiful with white sand and snorkeling right there. It is a small stretch and there are smooth rocks upon entry. Great for swimming and floating.

We hope to return someday to this amazing and fabulous resort. It truly was the trip of our lifetime.

We travel to exotic beaches often. Sugar Beach is serene and beautiful. The floor of our bungalow was concrete, not patterned concrete, very bizarre for a luxury property. You are quite locked in at this location. Very small beach. The food was only mediocre. And, this property is in a rain forest so there are mosquitoes. Very over priced.

Good day,

Thank you for your comments following your stay at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.

I am sorry that it appears you had a less than perfect stay with us and that the design of our luxury beachfront bungalows did not meet your expectations.

We chose to have poured concrete floors in the bungalows, as opposed to the hardwood floors we have in the villas, as we wanted a robust surface that would not be damaged by tracked in sand, especially as these accommodations are literally just steps from the water’s edge.

Our culinary team works hard to present our guests with a range of satisfying menu options. I am sorry that also failed to meet your expectations in this area. Had you shared your concerns with our executive chef, I am confident he would have prepared dishes to your satisfaction.

Once again, thank you for your comments and business. We hope that you might consider a return visit despite your concerns.

We spent four nights at Sugar Beach recently and loved every second of the stay. This is a fantastic resort in one of the most beautiful settings we've encountered.

Our General Observations:

This resort is huge. It's built into the side of a hill, but this isn't any ordinary hill. It's parked right smack dab in between the Pitons. It is beautiful. Back to the size, you will probably need to call for a ride to get around the resort. An exception to this might be if you stay in one of the beach front bungalows. All that said we found the shuttle service to be pretty convenient, we never had to wait more than a few minutes.

There is something for everybody. I saw a fancy restaurant and a casual one. I saw a casual bar and a fancy bar. There are pool tables, and a ping pong table. There is a bocce court. There is a swimming pool or the beach/ocean.

It's expensive. I might advise getting the meal plan if you stay. Especially if you, like us, don't plan on leaving the resort over the long weekend.

The spa is one of the coolest we've been to. You can feel the relaxation setting in on the dimly lit winding walk to the check in area. The treatment rooms are built up into the trees in what feels like your own little mini rain forest. I was astounded at how cool (temperature) the entire place felt, being shaded in under the trees, while it was 85 and hot in the sun.

Our Room:

The room was very large and impressive. Anytime I can hit a button and a TV that we'll never watch materializes out of nowhere that is cool. Big dual shower. Nice tub. Good A/C. Protective mosquito netting around the bed. Spacious outdoor area with plunge pool. They had a mini bottle of rum waiting for us on arrival along with some fresh fruit.

The Beach:

Sand like sugar, ok now I get where the name came from. The ocean is super calm but isn't great for swimming or wading as it's a bit rocky in patches, but still, the water is very warm, it's calm, and the setting is superb so take a dip.

The Pool:

Very nice. Comfortable loungers.

Suggestions:

Do the buffet dinner the one night they offer it at the Bayside restaurant. Live music and excellent food.

Even if you don't use the gym, go up there and check out the view.

Get a spa treatment.

Use a lot of mosquito repellent. I used some, not enough, or missed some spots, and had about 15-20 bites. They like the ankles and the feet. You've been warned.

Don't forget about the beach bar. We didn't even know it was there until the second to last day of our stay. It's kind of tucked away towards one end of the beach.

Areas for Improvement:

The check-in is nice in that you are taken right to your room, so no front desk experience. Since the resort is so large and there is so much going on I think it would be a good idea for the butler to offer a 15-30 minute tour of the resort. Many guests would decline this and figure it out on their own, which is part of the fun, but I bet some would take them up on it and feel more in control of what's on offer.

Check the bill upon departure just in case. Long story short, we had more than a few hundred dollars removed from our bill. I don't think there was anything malicious going on just some confusion on a few items that were included in our package and to the resort's credit they were more than accommodating here.

Conclusion:

Great resort. Very comfortably high end. We'd be happy to go back.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are built into the hill. The lower numbers (e.g., 200s, or 300s) are closer to th...

My husband and I are back from a week here and we are so sad. We miss the majestic pitons and being treated like royalty!

We got driven straight to the villa which was awesome, no waiting in reception. The butler's were amazing and got us ice every day as we wanted. The bed in the room is the most fluffiest feather bed ever! Also, the Piton beer and sodas in the room were great. The plunge pool was fabulous (request a heated one) and the views from our terrace were spectacular!

Riding around on the golf carts everywhere, seemed like a hassle at first, but we got used to it and felt it was worth it to be up high in our villa.

I used the gym two days also, and it was great (although a little hot and smelly).

The sunbeds at the beach were the most comfortable chairs we've ever sat on and the breathtaking views of the Pitons on either side were amazing. They are still in my head.

The snorkeling and water sports right on the beach are top notch. People come on Thursday's for cruise ship day, so try to avoid that day as its crowded. It's a marine reserve, so there are so many cool fish and coral around. People actually come from all over the island just to snorkel there.

We had purchased liquor on the way to the resort (our driver brought us to a great place) and this helped us out a lot. We had breakfast and dinner included in our package and the food was very good! Always accommodating any changes necessary. We did find the portions were a little too small in the great room. On our 2nd night there, we asked for a 3rd entree, and they did give that to us no problem which was great!

The air hockey table was broken and their was no chalk in the games room for pool, so they should fix that issue...also all the records were scratched up in the snooker room. That room is awesome, by the way!

Everything really was perfect except for the mosquitoes up at our villa (in the 500's). Perhaps they could spray the area when its so bad? I came home with 50 bites, but I learned the last two days if I were to sit outside on our terrace, so just be armed with bug spray that came in the room and they would be gone instantly! I don't know why anyone would stay anywhere else really! I want to go back every year!!!

Good day,
Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.
We are pleased with your positive comments as well as your criticism on the areas that concerned you.
I would like to apologise for the less than ideal atmosphere in the gym. I can only imagine that the thermostat must have been turned up or that the air-conditioning unit was not on at the times you used the gym. Usually the fitness centre is kept at a cool temperature and is well-ventilated.
As you have mentioned, the National Marine Reserve just off shore offers some of the best snorkeling on the island. The visibility of the water is unbeatable compared to other locations, which is why it is so popular with non-resident guests. Thank you for your comments about the air-hockey table. You may be please to know that it has now been fixed and is working perfectly.
I would like to apologize for the problems you encountered with the mosquitoes. We strongly advise and encourage our guests to wear insect repellent being located as we are within a rainforest setting. We also have a comprehensive programme of pest control, which includes fogging and regularly spraying guest accommodations. Sadly, some guests are simply more attractive to these pests than others. We hope to develop an even more extensive action plan to help eradicate biting creatures in both the wet and dry seasons.
Even though you were faced with these minor disappointments, we are delighted that on balance you had an enjoyable stay.
Thank you for your business and comments. We look forward to serving you again.

Perhaps the most over and misused word in the English language is 'awesome', it is used to descibe everything from shoes to tv programmes, however, it is the most appropriate word to describe Sugar Beach. The location, the villas, the activities, the staff, the service are all first rate. On one day of our holiday alone we did snorkelling, Kayaking, pool, archery, snooker, pinball, air hockey......there is so much more to this place than just a beautful place to lie on the beach. Special mentions to everyone in the kids club, Alsie, Sharifa and Thomas, thank you to you all you made our childrens holiday and are a real credit to the resort. It has been interesting having been to the resort three years in a row to see how things are progressing and each year has improved on the last, with the only exception being that the fantastic guys in the fitness centre (Canice and Todd) are far more restricted to the gym and don't offer the pool aerobics, beach bootcamp etc. If you are reading Sugar Beach, Canice and Todd are hugely charistmatic additons to your team so don't hide them away! Hopefully see you next year.

Good day
Thank you for commenting on your third visit to Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, formerly The Jalousie Plantation.
At Sugar Beach, we aspire to be the best resort not only in the Caribbean, but the world. Thank you for observing and taking pleasure in the changes we have made over the last three years.
Families are a very important part of our business therefore; we ensure that we provide excellent facilities for our younger guests. The team in the Sugar Club is superb, They thoroughly enjoy their responsibilities and see to it that our younger guests have an amazing, fun-filled time full of activities.
We certainly agree with you that Canice and Todd are exceptional assets to our resort. I am sorry that the activities you experienced on your previous visits were no longer available for your enjoyment. We do widely promote their personal training services and their complimentary fitness classes are well-attended. We have taken on board your comments about the beach boot camp and the pool aerobics and may well revisit these activities and include them on future fitness schedules.
Thank you for your comments and loyalty to Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
