“Great for families but not a 4 star”
Reviewed December 20, 2009

Location and quality of the actual property is great, 5 star. This is a total contradiction to the way the hotel is run which sadly only rates a 2 star.
If you are travelling with young children then the swimming pool and location of the beach might make it worth enduring.
If you are a group of adults or a couple then I would look elsewhere because it will not meet your expectations of a 4 star resort.
My advice to anyone thinking of going there is book everything online before hand, dont waste your time by using the "services" offered at the hotel.

With both my girlfriend and I being European we decided to get away from the US for Thanksgiving and take advantage of the Caribbean for a short vacation. My girlfriend did the research for hotels and found the Bay Gardens Beach Resort, which turned out to be a fantastic choice.

Located in Rodney Bay it is close to some great bars and restaurants as well as the marina, golf courses and Pigeon Island, which is an historical landmark for the island. But for us, better than that was it's beach front location. Compared to other properties in Rodney Bay, the Bay Gardens beach area is not overcrowded, yet still has the same access to all the water sports you could need.

The only complaint I have about the hotel is access to tours & excursions. We really wanted to a boat cruise while we were there, and so asked reception for advice, to which they pointed us to the person responsible for tours at the hotel. However, getting hold of her was not easy as she also worked at the Bay Gardens Hotel. When we got in touch with her she informed us that there were no boat cruises available during the remaining days of our stay. This was obviously a disappointment, but also quite false. We soon discovered that this person worked for Cox Tours and only told us about tours they operated. So my advice to any guests (and to the hotel too) is not to rely on Cox Tours to satisfy your guests requirements for events!

What we did find, while talking to the guys who operated the water sports at the beach was that they had access to vessels that could be used for boat cruises, snorkeling and whale/dolphin watching on any day that wasn't booked. They are called Saluna Water Sports and are located right on the beach. Talk to Andre, who is extremely helpful and also a great skipper for a boat cruise.

We chartered a boat with them for an afternoon for $300US. This isn't bad at all, and you could easily fit more people on which would make the charter even better value. They pack the boat with drinks of your choice and you head out. Andre and our other crew member, Raj, were knowledgeable about the island and the places we visited and very accommodating. We had the chance to visit some great hideaways such a the side of Marigot bay that is not accessible by car, and some great snorkeling spots.

For other destinations we'd rented a car from the airport, and drove all over the island, including a visit to the "Drive Up Volcano and Sulfur Springs". If you do decide to visit here, you have to take a dip in the sulfur pool - which apparently has amazing properties for the skin as well as rheumatic and arthritic joints. Be warned, it's very hot, but definitely worth getting in up to your neck to feel the mineral rich volcanic waters.

Be warned when driving, the roads through the mountains (which makes up a log of the island) are windy with drainage ditches at the sides that you wouldn't want to get stuck in! Even though the distance between towns is not that great, give yourselves plenty of time as it's no freeway!

For restaurants I would say the best we visited was Razmataz in Rodney Bay (http://www.razmatazstlucia.com/). It's Indian cuisine is tasty and better than any Indian food I've eaten in Chicago. The service is good and it's not as pricey as other restaurants.

All in all, we had a great time and would definitely recommend this resort.

Went to BGBR for our Anniversary. We absolutely loved our time there. The resort itself is located within short walking distance from a ton of shops and restaurants. Safety is not a concern since there is almost always foot traffic in the area and it is such a short distance to the restaurants and shops. The resort is beautiful, the pictures don't lie.
We had our trips cancel on us unfortunately because not enough people booked while we were there, but all was not lost... Quincy runs the "Rule the Tide" water taxi behind the hotel. He was an incredible find! Quincy really made our trip enjoyable... when you go to BGBR find him as soon as you can and book some time with him. From water taxi trips to different parts of the island, scuba or snorkeling, a sunset ride around the island... he can even arrange for a land and sea tour of the island, for less than the tour companies charge.
We snorkeled with Quincy, he took us to Smugglers Cove and it was amazing! The location was secluded and it was like having our own private beach area to relax and enjoy the coral-rich waters. It was a nice choice for us since we were rookie snorkelers, the waters were not too deep and it was still a beautiful are to be in.

The room we had at BGBR was very nice. We had a beach-side suite and it was spacious, clean and very modern. The internet was reliable and all appliances worked as well as they looked. (I'd like to make a note that the internet at the Sandals Grande was awful, even when it was working. I use the internet to keep in touch with family back home so I wouldn't have a ridiculous phone fee while traveling. The internet at BGBR was good and quick enough to use SKYPE for phone calls, which we took advantage of.
The beach are was lined with beautiful trees, a nice place to lay out and get away fro the sun when you want to take a break from the heat. As far as water clarity, we could see the little fish around our toes while standing in chest-deep water. The fish will nibble on your toes while you are in there, a little alarming at first but you get use to it.

Overall we loved BGBR and would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good relaxing time, with easy local access to good nightlife, restaurants, and shops. Don't forget to look up Quincy with "Rule the Tide", the nicest guy with the best water taxi on Reduit Beach.

Stayed here with another couple for a vacation. I can not say enough on how nice everyone that worked at this resort was. To name a few, both women managers, Les, Dean, Catherine the lady who booked the tours, Stan our driver, and even the housekeeping staff. The resort is beautiful, and the 2 bedroom condo we had was spotless. The beach was beautiful and the location was in my opinion the best on the island. Booked through Interval on a Getaway and were very happy we did. We did not meet to many American vacationers in St Lucia, but the Europeans we did meet we great and very friendly.
St Lucia is a beautiful island, but there are a lot of poor, run-down looking sections. having said that, I would not hesitate to revisit because the people are very friendly and at no time did we not feel safe. There is however, lots of pot smokers every where you go so be prepared to be offered it. The resort did have security on the beach during the day, but again, the people were not a problem and would politely leave you alone if not interested in buying any of their crafts.
Make sure to take in the Firday night street party. It was about 50/50 natives to tourists and we had a lot of fun. There are plenty of good restaurants within walking distance. We did like Happy Hour at Spinnakers which was right on the beach next door. You could catch the beautiful sunsets there.
I have stayed at many resorts all over the Caribbean and I want to thank the people at Bay Gardens for a fantastic vacation and for running such a great resort. Unfortunately I can not remember the names of both the women managers that were there, hopefully we will be back soon and I can thank you again in person!

We travelled the first week in November to celebrate our wedding anniversary and booked half board or "modified american plan"as the hotel termed it. We had a deluxe beach front room. The hotel is a good hour and a quarter from the airport on very winding and hilly roads. However, it is in a beautiful position and the room choice contributed significantly to our enjoyment although some shade on the balcony would have been a great advantage in the afternoon. We were tired when we arrived and were confused by the description of the "modified american plan" that we were given on arrival. We initially understood that we could order up to $35 per head per day from the menu. On viewing the menu the first night such a sum would not have gone far. However the following morning we clarified that breakfast was excluded from this amount and providing we didn't order specials such as lobster we could order what we wanted ( we did find out when we checked out that we had to pay for the bottled water we had ordered with our evening meals N. B. the tap water is perfectly o.k.) The Dolphin Restaurant was closed for most of our stay, but was opened for one night when a special function was being held in the Hi-Tide Restaurant. On two ocassions during our stay Thursday and Friday and again on Saturday and Sunday, the same limited menu was offered which was a little disappointing i.e two menus for four nights. The same seafood starter in the Dolphin on the Thursday night was however completely different when served in the Hi-Tide on the Friday. Sometimes the food was really good and other times rather disappointing. There was a limited buffet breakfast (compared to other caribbean hotels we have stayed in) however one can always order omlettes or pancakes etc. from the menu to suplement the choice. On one ocassion we tried to order room service to go with a bottle of champagne the hotel had kindly given to us to celebrate our anniversary. Initially we were brushed off by a member of staff who said there was no room service as they had some event on. However, when we took this up with the front desk and the F and B Manager this was quickly resolved to our entire satisfaction. The evening entertainment was almost non-existant and, as the position of the hotel means that there are a number of restaurants in easy walking distance. this might provide a more varied option for an evening meal rather than being tied to the hotel through a half board option. Whilst we did not try any of these, other guests told us they were good, but expensive. We took in an island tour which included the Pitons, volcano, waterfall, plantations etc that was enjoyable and good value. The St Lucians are very welcoming and friendly and at no time did we feel insecure. They are almost as laid back as the Tobagans!

We would really recommend this hotel for couples or families. It has a fantastic hotel right on the beach at the quiet end and a gorgeous swimming pool too. Staff are all very friendly and courteous. Rooms are well equipped, particularly the suites and the large bed and bathroom heavenly.
We had a really fantastic relaxing 'baby moon'.

After a 1.5 hour drive from the airport it was wonderful to be greated by such friendly staff + glass of champagne! This holiday was to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

The deluxe room was superb and the standard of the hotel was excellent. It was only a short walk from our room to the beach.

This was one of the best holidays I've had in a long time and the experience at this hotel was a great factor in that.
