“Hated the food, the beach, and the noise!”
Reviewed April 14, 2004

The food here was cafeteria-style at best. It was awful. We ended up eating salads or a hamburger every day. The beach is so small you cannot move to a quiet spot. Because their are children here, it is always very noisy. The only redeeming day was when we took a side trip to The Grenadines. The facility has not been well-maintained and the concierge needs to find a new profession!

We did a lot of research when planning our honeymoon and even read some of the negative reviews here of St. James Club. But...when we got there...we were like waw. The entire staff was so friendly...the food was great...our room was well kept. They really treated us like honeymooners and gave us a great start to our marriage. The watersports were great and they were helpful in making tour arrangements. The hotel grounds are beautiful. Wonderful place to visit in the Caribbean. We are definitely planning to return next year.

I must say I was somewhat anxious having read such mixed review of the St James. I am so glad I ignored the ignorant cretins who trashed this hotel. I just returned from a weeks stay and it was one of the nicest vacations I have been on in a long time. The grounds were reminiscent of botanical gardens, the service was great, the food was excellent even in the buffet restaurants and the liquor was top shelf, they even had champagne! One of the restaurants does have a $35 charge for dinner, but it is well worth the money for the food and service. The rooms look just like the pictures online and were spotless. There were no "tip cups" anywhere that seem to be ever so popular at most resorts. The property is on the small side and is a bit older but in very good shape overall. The staff is continuously working so much that there was nary a stray leaf on the ground. The only negatives I can really think of is that reservations were hard to come by at the Tradewinds restaurant, even when it appeared to be less than full and the lighting was pretty poor at night. But that's really about the only "bad" comments I can come up with.

Like everyone else do not listen to the negative reviews. This is the second resort we have been too where there were similar reviews.

We arrived on a friday, flew down by helicopter to Castries which was great ans saved over an hour drive. Jumped in a taxi and arrived at the resort. Check in was quick they give you a towel card, your room key - ask for a safe key then it costs $1.50 night. Then a member of staff takes you off in a buggy to your room and explains where everything is.

The rooms were extremely clean, roomy, the air conditioning if there was a fault was a little noisy so take ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. If you us a hair dryer take your own, they have the continental europe things.

The food and drinks - wonderful, we mainly ate in the tradewinds which is a buffet restaurant, breakfast is held there - loads of fruit, ceral, cooked breakfasts and an omlette/fried egg section where the chef cooks what you want. At dinner time was a bar b que style lunch, burgers, chicken, sausages, steak, corn on the cob, shrimp etc plus salad etc. It varies each day.

A couple of days we at in the palm grill for lunch you do not need to book this, they have more sandwhiches again very nice. In the evening you have to book, they have a set menu with pasta, chicken, pork etc.
Again very nice food. The trick is to look at the tradewinds menu for the week decide what you don't like and then go and book the palm grill with the conceirge.

We ate in Nicoles the last night - for my american friends i would call it 'fancy', exceptionall well prepared food, you have to pay your $35 and wine is extra. Again this is booked at the Concierge.

We did see people trying to go to breakfast and other meals in their swinsuits and no shoes, don't they will very politely ask you to cover up with a sarong, t shirt.

The staff were exceptional, they are very gentle people, but very funny, all work very hard. Some people were quite rude to the staff and never uttered a please or a thankyou.

The sunbathing area was mixed, the adult pool had very little shade so we opted for the grass area between the pool and beach which had palm trees. You collect the towels each day from the sundower which is the central bar area by the pool. They also had a book library for you to sign out book, you also bok the tennis courts here.

On this point there was a huge range of activities avialable, the tennis pro got a big thumbs up for his lessons, aerobics, water aerobics, hobbie kats, kyacks, pedalos etc. However if you don't want to take part you don't have to.

The staff were also very good at putting out warnings about sun cream, hats etc even on the cloudy days, every one we spoke too said how easily is was to get burnt here, more so than other islands - not sure why, but they were right.

In terms of trips out, alot of people went of joys trip, he is located by the water sports and said how good it was. We went on the land and sea trip that Virgin holidays sold, which was too the volcanoe, tropical gardens, some villages and a catarmaran trip in the afternoon.
If you get travel sick take some tablets the roads are quite rough in places and with lots of hairpin bends but it just added to the fun.
They were well worth the money and everyone we talked too said their trip out was just as good.

As for the beach, well to me a beach is a beach, if you want a very long beach or to snorkel don't go here go to a resort in Rodney bay.
The St james club beach was good for us as it served only the st james club, was never that crowded, nice waves to jump.

apart from that we had a thoroughly lovely time swimming sunbathing, drinking and eating.

After reading the reviews had mixed feelings but went with an open mind. The welcome we received when we arrived very was very warm and friendly and we were delighted with the standard of our room. OK the bathrooms could do with updating but no complaints. We got a third floor room with partial sea view but the rooms opening out to the gardens were just as nice. A good selection at meal times but we prefered the Palm Grill and there was no limitation on the number of times we booked it. All of the staff were great and seemed only too happy to make us welcome. Yes the beach is small but it is cleaned everyday and there are plenty of sunbeds. Joy's trip can be recommended, good value for money. Do not be afraid to go out on the locaL bus, we went to Castrise and Rodney Bay, everyone is very helpfull. The situation of the adults only pool is nice and has a small bar and they also serve afternoon tea and snacks. We found that the evening entertainment was very good, generally bands. Recommed Piers Hideaway which is situated next to the Palm Grill and by the waters edge , so in the evening before you eat it is very pleasant to sit with you drinks listening to the sea and looking at lights of Castrise. I would recommend this hotel as we had a very good holiday.

I don't know what those stuck up people are talking about how this was the worst trip. Hands down this was one of the best resorts I have ever been at. We like it so much we found another St.James Club in Antigua and we are going there in the end of June. You can't find any better service anywhere, and the food incredible. If you are thinking about going here do it, it is non stop fun for your entire stay.

Myself and my husband have just come back from a 2 week break at St James. After reading the reviews we were a little concerned to say the least. But to be honest I don't know why because whatever you read about how shabby and horrible the place is, it is a load of rubbish.
The hotel is excellent the staff are absolutely wonderful polite and could not do enough for you. The rooms are spotless and cleaned every day. The food is fine with a wide selection. Right the beach is not that big but its still ok and whats great about this hotel is the fact you are central to Castries which is a short ride down the road and also Rodney Bay which I recommend taking time to visit. St Lucia is a wonderful beautiful lush green Country and I would recommend anyone to try out this hotel. Unfortunately you can't please everyone and quite frankly from reading the reviews if these people are not happy then they should spend more money and go to somewhere like sandals but then again I think they would still moan wherever they went.
