Street dancing, crowds, roadside drinks, etc, with a ( small ) number of pushers offering faked drugs, a "Cuban" cigar seller wandering around with some dubious "Havana " cigars and some "commercial" looking and calculating local girls ( and probably some boys ) for hire. Friday night is the big night, as it is in most of the Caribbean.
Its a place mainly for tourists and if you go, take it all with a pinch of salt but watch your surroundings and possessions ( ideal place for pickpockets ) , don't carry or wear too much fancy stuff or look too affluent, don't get falling down drunk or you will be an easy victim, but otherwise enjoy it. Having said that I was with around 40 street - wise Trinidadians who pretty much took it over and I live in the Caribbean so I know the score. Yes there is some security but look after yourself , however its probably less edgy than it initially looks, so don't be scared away. Its the sort of place you probably go to once and with some friends, and the next Friday you find something better to do.
The small restaurant in a wooden chattel house just down a side street from the main crossroads, The Golden Taste, has been highly recommended and we chatted with the chef / owner who is very pleasant.
