4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2014

We stayed over Easter although slightly dated the hotel is very clean and the location is breathtaking the beach is pure paradise, the staff were all very pleasant and always eager yo help. The food was good but tended to be slightly the same sort of food each meal time, it was a wonderful holiday and we didn't have any complaints, for the small amount we paid for the week it was excellent value, the wtersports were great and we loved sitting in the restaurant overlooking the sea, we would most definitely return. Room Tip: Room 276 was great and the sea view was magic

My boyfriend and I decided to spend a 5 day vacation at the St Lucian after we compared the reviews of multiple resorts on the island. We were extremely pleased with our choice. We chose the sea-facing room and we were not disappointed. The room was clean, the bed huge and comfortable, and we were surprised with a stocked minibar. The view from the room is completely breath-taking. The food was great! Furthermore, the resort is staffed with the most wonderful, helpful and truly vibrant people.

We will definitely return in the near future!

Room Tip: The view from the highest floor (ask for a sea-facing room) is breath-taking!

As everyone states fantastic location one of the best bays I have ever been in and with an ever changing view of lovely boats and yachts. Yes the public areas could do with a little updating and also a daily clean and tidy up, my main bug bear is they did not wipe the tables around the pool area as the drinks and cocktails are served in plastic cups they often blow over and spill leaving sticky liquid and it then just remains! On a couple of occasions I asked for a wet cloth to clear it up and was given it and all sorted. Surprised though they did not offer to do it for me! It would be nice to have plastic glasses rather than cups... Saying that we were there two weeks and never really felt disappointed about the food, yes maybe slightly repetitive but when eating three meals a day never hurts to maybe just have a little less at anyone meal. There are many restaurants close by which we never used but know people who did and they were very impressed (prices appeared similar to uk) we did couple of trips catamaran day and a must do the Segway was such fun and not as difficult as thought it would be. Over all a great location big rooms and maid service was good all the staff very friendly and had a good banter with you, they all seem to enjoy their work which is a joy to see.
We definitely will return to Sri Lanka and certainly would consider this hotel as a three star it is what I would expect but has the location of a five star. (Sandals grand being in the same bay!!! ) shame that the sister hoer is closed bit of an eyesore hopefully when the economy picks up it may be bought up and rebuilt but will no doubt carry a higher price than the St lucian excellent value for money.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2014

My friend and I stayed here for a week (Dec 2013) and our biggest complaint was about the food. We have never been to an all-inclusive where there wasn’t something to eat just about any time of the day. At the St. Lucian breakfast is served from 7:30am-9:30am, lunch from 12:30pm- 2:30pm, and dinner 7-9. Other than those times we didn’t see any food available except for some coffee and tea. (One nice thing they did for us since we checked in after lunch had been served, and a few hours till dinner, was make us a ham and cheese pressed sandwich with one slice of ham and once slice of cheese with fries.) We didn’t like the fact that we had to strategically plan our day out so we didn’t starve waiting for the next available time for a meal. There is also only one option for dining and that was the buffet at the Mariner’s Restaurant. It was mentioned to us later on in the week that you can request an early/late meal to fit your schedule that day; however it was also noted that if you request food to take away from the restaurant for a day trip, for example, they will charge you a fee. The breakfast usually consisted of pancakes, beans, bacon, some fishy dish, sometimes sausage, oatmeal, frosted flakes, special K, fruit, and an egg station. Chef Kurtney was definitely the friendliest chef there. He usually was at the egg station in the morning and the grill for dinner (a huge thank you must go out to him for fulfilling some of our wacky requests; our trip wouldn’t have been the same without his thoughtfulness and desire to please the guests). For lunch and dinner there were only a choice of 5 hot food dishes (fresh market vegetable (usually carrots) and plain white rice were always served as 2 of them). They also tended to have a lot of curry dishes during our stay. There was always a bowl of plain romaine lettuce and 3 other cold salads. Dinner had soup and either freshly grilled fish or a hot carving station and lunch had a sandwich press station with fries. Desserts consisted of 2 choices of precut small pieces of cake and a bread pudding. We never saw any ice cream :( Most of the wait staff were on point and courteous. There were a couple of times we were ignored for getting our water glass refilled and one instance we were asked if we wanted tea and then it was never brought. Our last night there we noticed a menu posted in a display box. We almost fell over when we saw how much we would have to pay for the lousy dinner if we weren’t part of the all-inclusive plan. It was something like $45. Totally outrageous for what we were served. I wish I had noticed this at the beginning of the week to have a complete set of photos. One last thing about the dining experience – you have cats begging at your feet. Since you sit right on the beach the dining area is open and when food is out so are the animals. We saw at least 3 different cats and 1 dog (Wendy) while we were there. The dog stays on the beach (all day) and doesn’t really beg for food, but does have barking fits from time to time.

I’ll now give a run-down of other things we observed/learned/experienced while staying at the St. Lucian.

Our room – Our reservation said that we were to have a garden view, but we had a pool/ocean view instead (free upgrade?). The room was a typical Caribbean room with tile floors, a dresser, a table and chairs, a desk type thing with mirror, sliding door to balcony with table and chairs, 3 closets with hangers and a safe, 2 beds, and a bathroom. There was a flat screen TV on the wall, but it didn’t rotate so the person in one bed didn’t have a very good viewing angle. The channel selections and reception were poor (DirecTV), most channels were full of static. The one clear channel was in Spanish. The bathroom looked like it could have been updated recently however, our tub didn’t drain so well and by the end of our showers we were standing in ankle deep water. The shower head was big and the pressure was adequate. We also noticed tiny gnats/ants on our sink daily. Housekeeping did not replenish the soap/shampoo/conditioner and once forgot to replace our towels, leaving us with nothing. Towels were brought up to us a few hours after we notified the front desk. The sheets were changed although I’m not sure about daily. None of these things were a big deal for us, but I’m just letting others know what they can expect. Also, while we were there the main water pipe burst. We weren’t affected by it (except for some air in pipes noise when the water was used) and might not have ever known it had even happened except that they left a note in our bathroom explaining that they were in the process of fixing it and were sorry for the inconvenience. One gripe about the room is the key they gave us to access it. They gave us a metal key on a big key chain (no electronic card access). Our door took a little messing with to get it to open each time.

Amenities - They said we had access to the spa/gym next door at their sister hotel the Royal. Although we could use the spa/gym it was noted that we could not use their pool as it was for the Royal guests (much nicer pool than what the St. Lucian had to offer). Also if you ate or drank at their bars/restaurants you were subject to pay for it. The gym at the Royal was VERY outdated. As far as cardio equipment went there was one treadmill, one stepper or elliptical (can’t remember which) and 2 bikes (one was out of order). The rest of the gym was filled with weight machines all from way back in the day where I would be scared the cable might snap. They also had some free weights which looked rusted. We did not use this facility. The spa area consisted of 2 lounge type beds with cold water and tea, a hot tub, a cold tub, a dry sauna, and a steam room. There were showers and locker rooms available also. We sat in the steam room a few times and tried the dry sauna once (it didn’t seem hot, didn’t feel like messing with it, so we left).

Watersports – we saw kayaks, 1 paddle boat, a paddle bike, and 2 sail boats. If you need a lesson to operate the equipment lessons will cost you $30-$35 (depending on who you talk to). Most of the equipment is dated. We decided to take a paddle boat out and almost didn’t make it back in because one of the paddles broke off! It was rusted and with the pressure applied by peddling, it just snapped off. Later on in the week it looked like they fixed it. How… I don’t know…my advice is to not go out very far if you chose to try something out.

Entertainment – One word – nonexistent! During the day there are no games, lessons, or even music to listen to. This didn’t really bother us since we were out and about but it might be nice to know. At night a few times at dinner a guy came and sung with his guitar. This was nice, but he repeated the same bunch of songs every time he came. If there was going to be real entertainment for the night the hotel staff would put a note under your door letting you know the morning of. We were unable to make the one show they had while we were there (a band). We heard from others that the hors d’oeuvres that were served were okay.

This resort seemed to cater to the older crowd 50+ (mostly European) and was casual. We brought dresses and wedges to wear with our dresses but we felt very over dressed so we downplayed it and stuck to flip-flops all week. We did see a guy get turned away at dinner for wearing shorts and a sleeveless shirt so I guess they aren’t too casual.

They also provide free Wi-Fi, however the signal is very weak. The resort also charges for ALL calls. Local or not, any outgoing call will incur a charge. When I returned home my father asked why I did not return his call. Apparently he called and left a message for me to call him back which I never received. I guess I needed to pay for a message service too? Good thing it wasn’t an immediate emergency! Even though they accept US dollars the reception more likely than not won’t make change for you. A couple of times we needed smaller bills for the bus and they claimed they didn’t have anything. Some of the bar/wait staff were able to exchange bills for us using their tip money.

The best thing about this resort is the location. It is right on the beach and only about a 10-15 minute walk to other restaurants, bars, shopping mall, and bus stop. The buses are easy to catch, cheap, and convenient. If paying in US dollars make sure they are newer bills. They won’t accept older, wrinkled/worn bills. One other tip we learned is that if a taxi driver approaches you and is overly friendly he is trying to take you somewhere they are probably trying to rip you off. We had a taxi driver telling us that he would take us somewhere for $20 (after he dropped the price a few times when we said no). We continued to say no since we knew the bus would take us there for $1 each! If you need a taxi try and find a professional driver.

Since I slacked off for a few months before I could get my review on here maybe some of my complaints have already been addressed. I have read some more recent reviews and they make reference to entertainment on Wednesdays and a beach BBQ on Saturday nights. Also, the other restaurant seems to be open and available to eat at (although you must pay for it since it doesn’t seem to be included in the AL plan). These things were not the case for us (maybe we were there on the off season?). We also didn’t have a problem with cruise ship passengers on the beach. The chairs and umbrellas that are set up in front of the restaurant are not for guests. Guests are to use the yellow chairs (watch out for dog hair on them as well). We did get the occasional local trying to sell us stuff or just sit down next to us and talk our ears off though. We only planned to chill on the beach one day so this was the only day we encountered this. We were extremely active and highly recommend that if you are able you should go out and see the island. We walked to the bus station and ventured out every day. Pigeon Island and Castries were easily accessible via bus. We also took a few tours which included hiking up the Piton, Tet Paul trail, 4-5 different waterfalls/mineral baths, zip-lining, volcano and mud bath, snorkeling, catamaran cruise, and botanical gardens just to name a few off the top of my head. So much to see! Don’t stay at the boring resort – go out and explore!

Top location, best beach and views, the management need to listen to the very loyal workers.

Tim Alfred should be made Minister of tourism for St Lucia.

Wendy the beach dog is an asset to the hotel and needs to be looked after by the hotel.

The place needs a massive cash injection in decor and training, prime for a "Sandals type" takeover.

Great location good value, listen to the staff who are the key to our great stay.

Do something with the old hotel next door as it is a breeding ground for the many mosquitoes....bring your spray!

Dear valued guest,

Thank you for choosing The St.Lucian by Rex Resorts for your holiday and for taking the time to post your review about your stay.

I certainly agree the hotel is not modern facility, but it offers a true Caribbean charm which do appeal to a great number. Unfortunate that it did not appeal to your liking; nevertheless your concerns were noted and addressed accordingly to our shareholders.

I alarmed by the comment regarding the management needs to listen to our workers as there is an open door policy to listen, communicate and disscuss with them any matters related to the operation of our Resort as we will be more than happy to exchange Ideas and criterias that will enable us to to provide a much better service to all our guests. We will ensure that the open door police is reinforced at all Manager levels in order to be more closer to our valuable staff as we recognize they are key in our organization.

The hotel next door is part of a project for works to start very soon.

Once again, our sincere thanks for choosing The St.Lucian by Rex Resorts for your vacation holiday and we do hope to have you again with us in your next trip to the beautiful Island of St. Lucia.

Just returned from a 7 day at the Rex Resorts all Inclusive in St. Lucia. The hotel was a bit outdated and could definitely use some major updated. That being said the rooms were very comfortable and clean. The staff was always friendly and willing to answer all your questions. The food left alot to be desired, very bland and very limited, not enough variety. The locals were all very friendly and my husband and I struck up a conversation with a very nice gentleman named Lincoln on the beach and we ended up hiring him to take us on a day tour with his boat and we got to see some of the beautiful sights that the island had to offer.
