“Great 8 days at the Rex!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2012

We just returned from our trip to st Lucia - we stayed at the Rex 8 nights and are VERY happy with our choice. I do a good amount of research while planning our vacation, and read a lot of reviews of the hotel. Some of the very negative ones worried me a little, but I knew from the experience to take it with a grain of salt. We could not be happier with our choice. The hotel is in an amazing location - within walking distance to a lot of restaurants, bars , a coffee shop etc. We had no interest in AI as we prefer to try different places to eat and drink , and this hotel is perfect for those who want the same. Close and safe to walk to many restaurants in Rodney Bay.
The hotel is in a perfect spot on the beautiful Reduit Beach. They have their own chairs , reserved only for guests staying at the Rex and security checks frequently that the spots are not occupied by cruise people. We didn't find the cruise ships in town to be that big of a deal.
Everyone in the hotel is super friendly, and happy to help you with anything. Tim the bartender makes THE BEST drinks !!!
The big pool with the swim up bar is open , but we used it once, as we wanted to take advantage of the beautiful beach.
We enjoyed the entertainment on some nights, especially on Monday night, when there is also a happy hour with free drinks 6-7 pm.
Make sure to get to know some of the locals, we met some really nice and interesting people. Yes, they do approach you to sell you things, but most of them are very nice about it, and if you don't want to be bothered , they won't nag you. Felix makes great birds, if you want a nice souvenir. Also Smiley, Quincy and the Wisard ...
But the best of all, something you MUST try is a little tent set up by Spinnakers called " Sabrina's" - two women cooking jerk chicken and fish right there on the beach every day for lunch! It is the BEST chicken ever. She also has cheap beer ( 2 Pitons beers for 5 EC) and unbelievable Rum Punch. She's there every day from about 11 am till she sells out and we strolled down the beach every day and had lunch there!! Just try it once and you'll be back.
Overall, we were very happy that we didn't listen to all the negative comments. The fact that the hotel could use a fresh coat of pain doesn't make or break our vacations. We had a sea facing room, with a gorgeous view , it was very clean, and we really didn't spend much time in the room anyway . The hotel is an excellent value and in a perfect location. Not sure why some people expect it to be luxurious ,for the price of a 3 star ?!

One of the best things about the St Lucian hotel is the genunie friendliness of all the staff (with a couple of unsmiling exceptions). We found them very helpful and happy to serve you; remember they do work very long hours and some can be a bit shy so make the effort to be friendly with them. Overall we think St Lucia is one of the best islands for getting to know the locals. Remember also that St Lucia is also suffering from the world economic recession.

Ok, this hotel is not Sandals but you're not paying inflated prices to go 'posh'. Parts of the hotel are 'tired' and in need of refurbishment but we found the rooms to be clean and acceptable standard for showering and sleeping. Upgrading the room definitely helps; the ones with the beach view and enclosed grass area are probably the best. We also found the Mariners Restaurant buffet food ranged from good to very good with a wide variety available though it is repeated every week and choice is occasionally limited.

The beach is great and in a wide bay. True, some days hordes of cruise trippers invade the beach, using the hotel facilities which can be annoying; however you can escape them by walking a few metres along to the southern end, most cruise trippers seem incapable of walking further than a sun lounger. By 3.30pm they're all long gone and you get the quiet beach back again We didn't find the beach sellers any problem at all. A polite 'no thanks' and they quickly move on. A couple are real characters and good at local crafts - seek out 'Mickey' near the Spinnaker beach bar for excellent palm leaf hats, whilst up at the far north end 'Smiley' makes exquisite little birds from coconuts. Support their efforts if you can.

So if you want 5 star luxury go elsewhere and pay a fortune. Remember St Lucia is suffering from the drop in tourist trade and economic recession as well so we reckon the money isn't there for major upgrades. The St Lucian isn't perfect but as a three star it's fine. You'll remember the quality of staff and the great location long after the inconveniences. Take some of the whingeing in other reports with a pinch of salt and be thankful you're priviliged enough to spend a couple of winter weeks on a warm and friendly island.

Best bits: The staff and hotel location. Virgin rep is excellent. Try the Segway and catamaran tours which are also excellent
Worst bits: No visible senior management presence. Parts of the resort and some facilities may be closed as guest numbers decline (check with your tour operator first). Busy beach on some days from 10am to mid-afternoon

Room Tip: Check out the rooms with beach views and grassy frontage. Room numbers in the 180 range

Just returned from a 10 day stay at the Rex St. Lucian with my girlfriend for some winter sun. We had a fantastic stay on the island. The hotel was pretty quiet and I think they upgraded us to a Pool View room (#176) which was great - we could stroll out to the pool and then straight on to the superb beach and sea in seconds. The room and bathroom was spacious (2 double beds), comfortable and very clean. Flowers on the bed on arrival and a free drink were a nice touch.

We definitely made the right decision in going for 'Room Only' - we ate in the Mariners Restaurant at the hotel on our first night and waited for an hour for a very average (at best) meal. But there are loads of amazing restaurants and bars in the Rodney Bay area and being room only meant we could take full advantage (check out Delirious and Ku De Ta in the village, and Starfish & Bread Basket at the marina - all superb although quite expensive, London-type prices). We did have the continental breakfast a couple of times at the hotel which was alright.

In terms of the hotel staff, facilities and condition - I was impressed with the staff, there always seemed to be plenty of them around keeping the place clean and tidy, doing repairs etc. Ever-present security around too, not that you felt like it needed it but nice to know they are there. The large pool has re-opened although it was pretty deserted down that end - we didn't even know it was there until the 4th day of our trip. My girlfriend enjoyed the free aqua-aerobics sessions each morning - again another nice touch.

Overall we would definitely recommend the Rex St Lucian to others looking for a good value, clean and comfortable hotel in a superb location to explore the surrounding area and island. It isn't Sandals and as the other reviews say, is a tad tired in places but if you go with the right expectations I'm sure you'll love it as a base for your holiday, we certainly did.

Couple of other positives - free wifi, beach towels, sun loungers - we never struggled to get a good spot.

Negatives - we weren't part of a package holiday - the desk weren't very helpful when it came to booking tours and trips, but I just checked places out on the free wifi on my iPhone and then booked directly. Can recommend the Simon Says Tour from Sandals Grande (10 mins taxi ride or 5 mins water-taxi).

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2012

Both my husband and I arrived at the St Lucian on the 10th January 2012 and awaiting our transport to the airport as I type. (24th January 2012)

Like many, we read the some of the reviews on here but came with an open mind.

We flew with Virgin on a Virgin holiday package for the 2 weeks, we were welcomed at the airport with bottles of cold water for our one/half hour journey to the hotel. If you suffer travel sickness, then I suggest you take something before you leave the airport as it is a rather long and winding journey.

On arrival at St Lucian, we could see the place looked a little tired but we were welcomed by the most friendliest of staff and a refreshing cold drink then shown to our room. We had upgraded to pool view room and to our amazement and surprise we were provided a beautiful oceon view room that provided everything we needed, including the mini-bar (small fridge) stocked with beer and cold juices. The room was lovely and clean, nice white clean towels in the bathroom. The bed covered in beautiful petals and rolled up were our beach towels.

My other half being a fish eating veggie is very fussy with his food and we were worried that this may be a problem, NO, every meal was to his liking and taste and always plenty to choose from. The waitresses and all bar staff were friendly and only to eager to help in whatever way they could to make your stay comfortable.

Our only issues were the swim up pool bar was closed on our arrival and for the 1st 10 days of our stay. There was often difficulties in getting a sun lounger on the beach as the cruise liner guests invaded the public beach. However, these issues were soon dealt with by Management and staff alike---the pool was opened and the beach seating issue resolved. So thank you Ajay for listening to the guests and taking our views/concerns into account.

In all, we have had a super time here at the St Lucian and seriously considering returning with other family members as this resort, the management and ALL staff go out of their way to make sure you have a superb and relaxing holiday .
It would be difficult to just name a few staff who helped make our holiday so we just want to say THANK YOU to ALL of you and hope to see you soon.

If looking at going to the St Lucian, then do as we did and go with an open view.

Room Tip: Oceon View

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2012

First we have stayed at other rex resorts and we thought we knew what to expect for the price. We were not expecting a five star resort or anything of the sort. We knew what we had paid and what we should be expecting. A tired resort with average to good food, friendly staff and the essentials well run. This sadly is generally not the case for the St Lucian.

The big issue we had with this resort is the cruise ships. The St Lucian has a relationship with the cruise liners. This means that daily tens to hundreds of cruise ship passengers are dropped in the resort. They then walk through and use the hotel facilities, often with what seems preference over the hotel guests. There is one beach bar at the hotel which we were told we could not use, while the cruise ship people could use whichever bar they wanted. The hotel beds are squeezed into the worst part of the beach and the beach boys are very keen to tell the hotel guests where they can and cannot sit on the beach. If I wanted to subject myself to all the germs that go round a cruise ship I would go on a cruise. I don't, so I do not expect myself to have all the germs from dozens of cruise ships brought into my hotel. The crusie ship passengers can come and pay to eat the hotel buffet - causing the restaurant to be overcrowded at lunch and all those germs being spread round the buffet food. This behaviour from this resort is not on. Hotel guests have to come first and to my mind this was not the case. There is also something of a security risk with hundreds of unknown people walking past the hotel rooms on a daily basis.

The second big issue was that half the resort was closed - the part we were supposed to have an upgrade to. This meant that the big pool, the larger part of the gardens, one restaurant and one bar was closed. So a good portion of facilities we had paid for were not available. The pool area did re-open on our last day, but not, as far as I am aware, the restaurant. Nothing was said about this or no kind of apology given at all - the hotel management seemed to hope that guests would not notice what was missing. The fact that half the resort was closed meant that the cruise ship issue became more magnified.

The resort is also poorly maintained and dirty in places. Light bulbs are not even replaced in the restaurant meaning you cannot see your food at some tables. There is bare wiring in places and by the pool there was a rotten collapsed box with what appeared some form of electrical equipment showing. We had numerous problems with the plumbing in our room (bloked toilet, broken pipe, some days a trickle from the shower and a horrible smell pervading the whole bathroom if the aircon was not on), the safe in the room failed to work on a number of occassions and the maid service was very inconsistent (sometimes not even a proper clean (including not cleaning the toilet) and don't expect the shampoo and soap to be replaced unless you ask). The linen of the beds is not changed unless you ask which nobody tells you when you check in. Why not just change the linen once a week as a matter of course? If you walk round the resort and look there are some areas which would make you wonder what the kitchens look like!

The buffet food is what you would expect for a three star with good choice (although there could be more fresh fruit). The lunch was generally better than dinner and we found the breakfast good. However, if you eat off the menu at dinner the standard is horrific. Tasteless industrial gunk over meat and fish that had certainly come out of a freezer and probably been defrosted in a microwave. The Oreintal restaurant in the resort is of the standard of a very bad English chinesse take away. The sauces tasted very industrial and the quality of the raw ingredients poor. Do not bother with this place - it is empty most nights and that must be because the food is so bad. The main Mariners Restaurant has great views but the tables are so close together do not expect to have a quiet romantic chat with that view.

There are also issues with some of the staff in this hotel. One member of the bar staff gave me a coke that had been sitting behind the bar for god knows how long and when I asked for a fresh one refused. She also told my wife she did not do light on the rum in the cocktails and on one occassion the cocktail she made was so strong it made us feel nauseaus straight away. She also made sure she served you your drink when she wanted. In the end we just did not get a drink from the hotel when she was serving as she was so unpleasant. Other members of the staff could also hardly raise a smile or say two words to you. There are however, some lovely people working at the hotel and it is a shame that some of the other staff spoil their very good and hard work.

The resort is on a good position on the island, with the long beautiful reduit beach right outside your door. Just beware at times this beach turns into a crowded hell because of all the cruise ship people and there are a lot of beach sellers. Not all of whom are pleasant - some can be pushy and nasty.

The lounge at night is dead. The entertainment is terrible, the worst I have ever encountered. Bob Marley was murdered by numerous bad artists that could not sing and insisted on coming right up to your face to scream the lyrics at you. The dance troupe were like watching a school show. Therefore in the evening the resort has no ambience at all and for me the lounge was depressing to sit in. Think Peter Kay in Phoenix Nights!

We would not go back to this resort, there are problems here that go above those at other rex resorts which could spoil your holiday.

My Island tour guide was awesome. Frooty Lum (http://www.frootylum.com/frootylumpersonalguide.html) was a heaven send. He liaised with me from the time I emailed him about me thinking of visiting the island to the time I arrived back here at home. He made all the preparations for my stay on the island from Hotel Accommodations to Taxi and Tours plus Restaurants and myself and my sister did lots of massages and all of us absolutely loved the Mineral Bathes. The most important thing is, we saved loads of money because he knew people who offered the services directly. He was our personal butler. We simply communicated with him our needs whilst on vacation in Saint Lucia and he did everything. All we had to do was wake up in the morning and get going on our adventure.

Thank you Frooty. There are no others in the world like you.
