“Brilliant Steak”
Reviewed May 9, 2011

Big Chef was recommended by our hotel and we're so glad we went.

Our waiter was very quiet and seemed inexperienced. When we asked for a non alcoholic cocktail menu, he brought the martinis menu (which - totally disgustingly - had a squashed dead mosquito on the back of it). We asked whether they did non alcoholic versions and he had no idea (Lil' Chef / Ti Bananne in the same chain did lots of alcohol free alternatives). Perhaps he was new to the job.

However, there really is no excuse for dead insects to be stuck to a menu - please, please, please clean your laminated menus!

The steak was delicious. They will cut to any size, so my 8oz sirloin was smaller than the 12/14 oz options on the menu. We didn't expect a significant saving (it was about appetite and waistline, not cost!), but were very pleasantly surprised by just how much they'd been reduced.

The steaks are incredibly succulent and cooked to absolute perfection. Superb!

Sides - parmesan and truffle chips were extremely tasty, as were the
caramelised onions. Plantain chips were just oil and close to inedible.

Go again?
Definitely - the steak is SO good, and those truffles fries? Yu-u-mm-yyy!!

“Hate the name - loved the food!”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

It was the photos of the restaurant on their website that swung the balance for dinner here. The name makes it sound cheap and that it is in the Caribbean never fills me with confidence. However I was pleasantly surprised.

4 people, 2 bottles of wine, 2 filet mignion, 1 rib eye/ribs combo, 1 New York Strip, 3 starters = EC$700/US$264 with tip.

The arrival greeting was what I expected of the Caribbean; a busy important local talking on the cordless phone running around with the reservations book and completely ignoring us. Thankfully, it got better.

A personable, bright, well-informed staff member seated us, organised bottled water (don't drink the local water at the moment), told us about the specials, took our wine order and then guided us through an efficient food order all the time being cheerful and engaging.

All 4 of us where happy with our Texas-sourced Black Angus steaks. Sides were, sweet potato fries, garlic mash, cream spinach. The total bill was very near to London prices but not surprising when you consider most of the food and drink is imported. We were too full for dessert but the list stated all were freshly and locally made.

Well done to the Big Chef staff - I was surprised and impressed, will be back and will recommend to my friends and colleagues.

“Very Disappointed! Over priced for meat and potatoes!”
Reviewed May 3, 2011

Before going to St. Lucia for our seventh time, I checked reviews for a new restaurant. We have a couple favorites which we frequent every time we go (The Edge and The Charthouse) so we looked for different place. We chose Big Chef for the reviews and we very disappointed!! The decor is lovely, comfy and the food was edible but the service was deplorable. It was only myself and my husband so we were not going to have a large tab (especially with only two glasses of wine) and, so given this, I assume this was the reason for the lax service. We were seated immediately by a very friendly host but had to request a waitress for drinks. When the waitress came to the table asking for our order she was very disinterested (looking to other VACANT tables) and appeared ticked off when asked to questions about the menu. Yes, the owner appeared at our table for her nightly "run through" with customers but lingered the entire time we were there on a table of six who ordered BOTTLES of wine. Obviously my husband and I were not going to be big spenders and did not require attention. Our steak arrived medium at best when we requested RARE and was tasty but $40 for a piece of meat and baked potato was rather much. During dinner, another table of eight had received their dinner order. They were served by the ENTIRE staff who hand carried a plate in each hand to the table (I guess they didn't know a tray could hold several dishes at a time!?) While serving this large group one server trips and drops most of her rice plate on my husband's lap, apologizes and continues serving!!! No, the owner did not come over (too consumed with pouring bottles of wine at the next table) but another customer shared our distaste for lack of apology. For a delicious meal AND superb service visit The Edge in Rodney Bay!!!!!!!!

“Fantasic Fabulous Food”
Reviewed May 1, 2011

Great to go back and to see it had expanded but the food was still fantastic and the staff were still fabulous. It was our second trip to St Lucia with our 3 sons in two years and The Big Chef was the first place we headed to after we landed. It was great to see Kissi again and we ended up visiting three times during our vacation.
Thank you all and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.......

“The staff was great! Ambiance quite inviting.”
Reviewed April 14, 2011

The Big Chef sounds like a no frills chain name but do not be fooled. This restaurant is a gem! i was delighted upon entering to find such a pretty place with soft lighting and quiet dining. i was somewhat distressed the evening i dined there (nothing to do with BC) and our waitresses could not have been nicer or more helpful. Digna (sp?), our main waitress did everything she could to make me feel like i had a friend when i needed one. i was so grateful to her for her kindness. Many thanks, Digna.
