“Top service, top food and an American friendly bubble”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2014

Halcyon Beach is perfect for people who want to indulge in the all inclusive Sandals experience but don't necessarily want the reggae thumping watchtowers bawling out when the volleyball is going to be on. Don't get me wrong there is a smaller version of this by the main pool but having visited the Grande and La Toc there is no doubt this is a more peaceful location.

We were fortunate to stay in the 500 block close to the quieter Honeymoon hideaway pool but not right next to the noisy road which the 700 and 800 block are. The room was modern and comfortable with a four poster bed, well appointed bathroom, cable TV and an iPhone docking alarm with speakers.

The food on the whole is excellent. Many don't like the buffet style but the breakfasts there were fantastic with the choice to have freshly cooked eggs, healthy breakfasts and the usual American style overcooked bacon. The evening eateries are American friendly versions of Italian, steakhouse and Japanese. Kimonos is certainly fun to try even if the Caribbean style of cooking teppanyaki is far from authentic. Kellys Dockside is the big draw with it's pierside location. It's a cavernous steakhouse with pleasant fillet mignon and fish dishes where you choose your own sauces and veg. Mario's is a very friendly if somewhat underwhelming Italian pasta and pizza place with a very pleasant antipasto buffet.

There are a lot of friendly and greedy cats all over the premises. Each has their own territory. One in particular likes the Beachside grill and we nicknamed "Fast Food Kitty". The fast food there is perfectly passable if not particularly memorable.

It is certainly worthwhile to go to the other two resorts. We went to the Caribbean street party at La Toc which was good fun. Certainly worth walking up to the Sunset bluff to see the sun set. Also the Grande is more of a young party place and the beach there is probably the best. You can also rent kayaks and other watersports equipment and we went snorkelling for free which was great fun.

There is no doubt that Sandals is marketed predominantly to the American visitor and we were very much a minority in not being American. This means that service is friendly and good and it's all about the cocktails which will suit a lot of people. It is also a bubble and not the real St Lucia and most visitors should at least try and get out and see the wonderful scenery even if it is to go on a zipline through the rainforest.

However if you want a relaxing and stress free break especially for a honeymoon then this is a great place to come and we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: If you can specify don't choose the 700 and 800 rooms

10 year anniversary celebration with my hubby. Shuttle from airport is a 1.5 hour commute and the road is windy and shuttles fit about 6 people. I would have tried the helicopter transport. Great room, service, and staff. Traveled to both other St. Lucia resorts and were happy with our choice. Halcyon is the smaller of the resorts, but the most tropical without high-rise buildings, leading to a more relaxed and quiet retreat. We had a Romeo and Juliet walk out Beachfront room- bed was comfortable, bathroom was tile but not updated (but I didn't mind, it was fitting) The resort has 2 pools, one has activities most of the day if you are into that, the other is the quite pool where you can relax and enjoy drinks- may I say that Agnes lives up to her reviews! You can commute to the two other Sandals properties, they are about 15 minutes away and the shuttle runs every 2 hours. Food was excellent. Did not have a bad meal! We ate at all of the restaurants on the resort- the Filet at Bayside is excellent; Soy is awesome and kudos to Subrena, Lorenzo and our favorite server Davis; Mario's anti-pasta bar is unbelievable; Beach Bistro burgers, fries and nachos were great; La Toc (French) was amazing and Gordon’s has a breathtaking view with great seafood choices and cappuccino. Included water sports: paddleboards, Catamaran, kayak were fun and you can cruise out to “Rat Island” to hike around. We did snorkel to Honeymoon cover (included)- it was a nice time and didn’t take all day. Spa is extra, but there are many options to choose from- and the massages are done outside in a cabana; pedi’s in the Body shop. Did not do much excursions, but would change that and tried the Zip line and Julian’s Tour if given the chance. Our Butlers made our stay more memorable- hats off to Roland who is the Butler Manager, our reservations were booked for the whole week when we arrived and they made our anniversary a night to remember. We booked for next year!

Room Tip: If you want quiet, ask for rooms near the quiet pool or South side of resort.

Just home after 6 days at Halcyon. We had the best time. Can not find one complaint about our stay. We stayed in room 410, we had a great view of the ocean, and it was super quiet. At our arrival we were greeted with a cool rag, and a bottle of water, and Maverick took us right to our room. Brendalynn was our room attendant, and did an awesome job. We ate at all the restaurants at this location, and found no faults, I simply liked having variety. At Bayside, we were greeted on several occasions by Delores, she was always super friendly. We enjoyed the Paradise Pool/Bar it was more quieter, but mostly because we enjoy Agnes and Garie. We visited the souvenir shop, and had the pleasure to of met, Laevern. We had photos shot by Eden, he was very kind, and then we were helped by Cheryl in the photo shop. There is several cats that roam around, they never were a bother to us. We also had booked a couples massage, the ladies did a real good job. We had the pleasure to stay at this beautiful location, and hope to go back next year.
The only down fall to this location is the 90 min drive to/from the airport. After you travel for several hours, the idea of sitting in a hot van, and driving for another 90 min, we were tired, and hungry by this point, made this part the worst.
We did visit The Grande, beautiful place, but It is quite busy, we couldn't wait to get back to Halcyon for some peace and quiet.
Overall, We would highly recommend this location. We are in our 40's and found it very enjoyable.

Room Tip: stayed in building 4, very quiet, ocean view

We came to St Lucia for a friends wedding and elected to stay here versus the Grande where the wedding party stayed. We took the shuttle to the Grande to hang out with friends during the day and came back to the Halcyon for dinner. The Halcyon is 10 times quieter, laid back, and easy to get around. The Grande is Vegas huge with long walks to get around. We we're able to get poolside chairs or beach chairs at any time. All chairs are gone by 10:30-11 at the Grande and reservations are needed at almost every restaurant. The staff was either super friendly or not friendly at all. Food was surprisingly great at the Halcyon. My expectations for all-inclusives is not very high on past experiences, but the sushi was excellent, the Italian restaurant was my favorite and the retaurant on the pier had excellent steaks. You can save a ton of money NOT booking excursions throughout the front desk. Just look at any add from the magazines in the room and you will save 50%. Internet is horrible..they charge $14 a day or $42 for a week.

highly recommended. The service was outstanding, Amanda (Bayside), Angel (Mario) were the best hostess ever. It's going to be hard to measure serve from anyone else. Micheal, Marbel, Nadia will help you with all your needs as if you were family. Shara is the best bartender ever. She'll whip up anything. Lum teaches Scuba. My husband was very comfortable learning from LUM. He's the best. The Water sports people are the best.

Please see Jacquiline at Island Routes. She knows it all about the extras on the island. Much better that a cruise.

Must do tours are Treetops ziplining and Joe knows Tour with Capt Willy, Snoop dogg and Big AL

Room Tip: Corner suites are great

When booking our St. Lucia hotel, I was having trouble picking between Sandals Halcyon and Sandals Grand. I am very happy that I picked Halcyon. We are in our early 40s and when we travel we like a quiet and relaxing resort. Halcyon fit the bill! We had a beachfront Butler Suite. Upon arrival, I think we surprised them because we were early (took the helicopter). I did send an email stating that we were arriving early. We were led to the concierge area and waited a few minutes for Willard, our butler, to arrive. He led us to our room, and conducted a brief tour along the way. Our room (134) was nice, a large bed and a nice patio to sit out and look at the ocean. For me, the priority is a view of the water, and this was perfect. As per earlier reviews, the room needs updated, but this did not bother us at all and I have stayed in very high end hotels. I knew from previous reviews that the rooms needed updated so I was not surprised. Concierge rooms towards the back of the hotel have been renovated and look very nice. Our room was very clean, no issues at all. Our butlers (Willard/Claudia) saved us a lounger by the pool every day and packed us a cooler filled with water, beer, and soda. They also brought us snacks as well as lunch by the pool. The head butler Roland is a wonderful man, we got to know him a bit and he is a great asset to the hotel. This leads into why Halcyon is special - the staff. All of the staff work hard, and perform jobs that are not "their job". I witnessed on many mornings the hotel manager cleaning off outdoor furniture and picking up after guests. The employees were all pleasant and helpful. My husband especially loved Danny at the pool bar. The young lady that keeps the pool clean (Darnella) is very friendly and always working! All of the food was delicious at every restaurant. The fire pits are great and we met many wonderful people lounging around them in the evening. We did take the shuttle to the Grand (beautiful but very busy). We hiked in Pigeon park which is a 3 minute walk from the Grand. We ate at the French restaurant at La Toc and it was good. La Toc is a very nice resort and seemed quieter than the Grand. We truly enjoyed our stay at Halcyon and would return in a second! Please feel free to message me with any questions.

Room Tip: Romeo and Juliet beachfront walkout (134) has excellent views of the ocean. We fell asleep to the s...

My husband and I who rarely book trips at all-inclusives did so only because my sister decided to get married at Sandals Halcyon. And are we happy we went! We had a fairly large group including my four sisters and their partners, and seven other close friends of the bride and groom. I can speak for everyone that WE HAD ONE OF THE BEST VACATIONS here. The staff assigned to my sister's wedding (the Collins party) were absolutely wonderful: Tracy, Dane, Kermany and especially Trevor. And Michael Gaspard, the marriage officer who presided over her wedding, was simply wonderful, too. They were all so professional and yet also so warm and friendly. It was amazing how easily they became part of our crazy group. After the 4:30 wedding, we all enjoyed a two-hour sunset cruise on a lovely catamaran with the Sandals staff from the wedding. (My sister booked this ahead of time through Sandals.) The appetizers were delicious, accompanied by bottom-less paper cups of wine, champagne, beer and alcohol. And we danced to a great mix of music on the boat. After the cruise, a van ferried us back to Halcyon for the wedding dinner/reception at Kimono’s on March 24th. The staff was amazing here and the food was great. Even the kitchen staff came out at the end of the evening to sing and dance with us.

Aside from the incredible wedding day experience, the other days at this relatively intimate resort were lots of fun. Our group tried everything from waterskiing, sailing, paddle-boarding, kayaking, snorkeling to learning how to reggae dance at the Sunset Pool. The female staff running the activities at that pool were really great, too. We also ended up spending more of our afternoons at the Paradise Pool because the bartenders there were so much better than the ones at Sunset Pool. (That was the only place I encountered a staff member who basically never spoke or smiled. Why she was a bartender, I have no idea.) But at Paradise Pool -- the quiet pool -- a bartender named Agnes runs the show, and is she a pleasure to talk to everyday! She embodies what I think the Sandals culture strives to be all about. The two Gary’s who worked with Agnes were also great.

At all the Halcyon restaurants, the food was above average. I loved all the choices at Bayside for breakfast and lunch everyday. I’m a healthy eater and loved ordering a plain omelet at the grill every morning and eating the local fresh fruit. Yum. The Jamaican coffee served in nice silver carafes was delicious. I even stopped ordering my usual morning cappuccino because the regular brewed coffee was so darn good. At lunch, it was heaven to have poached or grilled or curried fish every day. A note about the restaurants’ staff: you’ll usually see the same waiters in the morning that you saw the night before at the restaurants. Most of them work split shifts and most of them will remember you, too. We had dinner at Kelly’s one night, which was good and the location is beautiful. And because we ate dinner later most nights, we would have sushi at Soy (no reservations required) around 6 to tide us over. The sushi chefs were delightful, and the sushi was quite good, too. Otherwise we ate most often at Mario’s (no reservations required here either) because we loved the large selection on the antipasto bar, the wait staff and especially Angelo, the manager, who might be the most accommodating manager I’ve ever met. Ditto with the manager at Kimono’s.

One night four of us ventured over to the Grande to eat at their fancy Italian restaurant, which was very nice, too. Another night six of us went to La Toc to eat at the French restaurant also called La Toc but our reservation was screwed up. The hostess said they only had room for 4 of us not 6, so my husband and I volunteered to bow out, got back on the shuttle and went back to Halcyon. It was quite disappointing to learn afterwards when the other two couples returned that a 2-top and another 4-top were empty the entire time they were at the restaurant. They complained to the manager who had said that if they had been MORE insistent that they would have found room for ALL of us. To say the least, that’s not how to handle your guests. And it was so unlike any experience we had at any of the restaurants at Halcyon where everyone seemed to bend over backwards to make us happy. So that was not cool.

As for the resort grounds, the two pools and beach at Halcyon, everything is very well maintained. I know it’s unavoidable but be prepared for the weed-eaters buzzing in the morning but not until after nine. The pools were spotless and fun to swim. I did an Aqua-size class one day, which was a real workout. And unlike the other resorts (from the reviews I’ve read), at Halcyon we never had trouble finding lounge chairs in or out of the shade. Same on the beach, which wasn’t very long, but reasonably nice and good for a pre-sunset or early morning walk.

Also be prepared for vendors to approach you on the beach. All beaches in St. Lucia are public, so vendors have a right to be there. Most of them are polite and will leave you alone if you ask them to. If you do go on the beach, expect to meet one of the guys wearing yellow shirts -- Julian, Kennedy or Eric. They’re not affiliated with Sandals. They’re with Julian Boat Tours & Cruises -- www.julianboattours.com -- and well worth a listen. Our whole group went on their tour, and aside from the post-wedding Sunset Cruise, it was the other highlight of our trip. Julian’s crew picks you up on the Halcyon beach around 9 a.m. (you have to wade out in the water) and zooms off along the stunning St. Lucia coastline for a day filled with an itinerary of must-do’s and must-sees on the island. For $110 a person (you give them $40 cash -- U.S. is fine -- when you sign up and then the remainder at the end of the trip, also preferably in cash, but you can also pay the balance using a credit card in a Souvenir Shop at the end of the day), you ride on a comfortable boat with a Bimini for shade, stop for photo ops in front of the Pitons or other famous sites, dock in a lovely cove to snorkel (they provide the gear which is pretty good), watch cliff divers (who will swim up to the boat asking for tips, which we didn’t have and wish we’d brought money with us like one dollar bills), then you get off the boat, get in a van and travel up hairpin turns to the volcano and mud baths (very hot water!), and the pounding waterfall (very cold refreshing water!) If you want to do the mud thing, and you shouldn’t miss it, pack an older suit with you to wear that day because it’s hard to wash off all the mud and your suit will smell from the sulfur for a few days afterwards. But the best part was having real island food at Kennedy’s home next to the volcano, prepared by his lovely mother. Everything was delicious. (Please bring money to tip her, too!!) Then the van takes everyone back to the boat for the nice ride back to Halcyon. (Beer, wine and rum punch -- yummy -- are all included, too.) Around 3:30, we were dropped off at the Halcyon beach. It was a very fun, memorable day, money well spent.

It’s true that Halcyon skews older. Our group ranged in age from late thirties to early sixties. But there were also plenty of younger people, especially honeymooners. And yes, things close down earlier at Halcyon, usually around 11, but we were always tired by then and ready for bed. The Friday night we were there, we danced for a couple of hours to the great music from a fabulous cover band -- four guys, one of whom was an awesome singer. One of the female staff members who had assisted with our reggae dance class joined us on the dance floor. I wish that cover band had been there another night, too! That was the best entertainment we had during our 7-night stay.

Lastly, a few pointers about the rooms. Most of us opted for the concierge rooms, which are in four separate buildings that arc around Paradise Pool. We were all on the second floor with balconies, which I thought were preferable to the first floor rooms. All balconies have a table and two chairs and a nice umbrella. It’s a great place to sit and relax and listen to the crazy birds and watch the world go by below. We also liked having our fridge and wine and liquor restocked daily. It was nice to open up a bottle of wine before dinner. We did end up changing rooms a couple of times though. The first night we were there we had to move because of a weird persistent mechanical noise that I likened to a dying animal kept us awake. So the kind night manager with the help of the maintenance man moved us from Room 611 to Room 712 (I think). That room was better but there was also a strange recurring noise in that room and we could also hear the traffic noise since the main road butts up behind the 700 and 800 buildings. So we asked to be moved again the following morning and landed in Room 513, which was wonderfully quiet. I admit that we are both unusually sensitive to noise, so things like this might not bother other guests. One nice thing was that we rarely heard noise from adjacent rooms or from below us. And we never heard a television, which to us was nirvana. The last thing I want to hear on vacation is a dumb T.V. blaring in the next room. Only one couple stayed in the 400 block of rooms which face the ocean. I think they may have even had a little bit of an ocean view. They never heard any traffic at all! Those rooms aren’t as up-to-date as our rooms were, but they were quite nice. Oh, and a big thank you to our cleaning lady, who spiffed things up for us every day. She was always smiling and singing.

As for things we wish we would have brought with us: 120-volt convertors. There was only one 110-volt outlet in the whole room, which was a real problem for us because we had two iPhones, an iPad and camera batteries to charge daily. (We filmed the wedding and trip for everyone.) And there was no outlet in the bathroom for the hairdryer, so you have to use that in the bedroom. If you have allergies, bring Benadryl and eye drops. And bring Croakies for your sunglasses if you plan on doing any water sports, too.

I give Sandals Halcyon a warm thumbs-up. I’d definitely return but probably with a group again as it was a blast to play with all the people you love for seven glorious days. A big thanks to all the great people who work at Halcyon, too!

Room Tip: Rooms in the 500 block are quieter and away from the traffic noise. Second floor rooms are nicer too...
