“Fantastic value for money”
Reviewed May 22, 2011

Being owned by Saga this is a fantastic hotel where the client certainly comes first. The rooms are spacious, brilliant views, clean and come with extra luxuries such as DVD player and binoculars. The rep. Andy is incredibly hard working and fun to be with. Patrick, the manager, is attentive and very visible. Food is plentiful, varied and well presented. The free bar is difficult to abstain from! Our only expense [and well worth it] was visiting Pigeon Island, which costs $5 each and $2 for sun bed as it is a national park. [take free shuttle bus] You are a bit stuck in the hotel because of its position and there is not a lot to do on the island, but with lovely gardens, good pool, varied bird life it is a good place to stay in.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff, food and excursions were excellent  and we would certainly come here again.

Room Tip: All rooms were fine.

I will first of all get rid of any negative comments.
1. Steep Hill. Requires great fitness to climb. Difficult by day, and by night, or in the wet, downright dangerous.
2. Small poolside area. When all the guests decided to stay in there was limited sunbeds and shade.
3. Compared to larger hotels such as Riu the food choices are more restricted.

The way the hotel got around these problems:
1. Frequent shuttle buses to town and beach.
2. A good selection of free and optional excursions meant that the hotel was rarely full by day.
3. The number of food choices available was more than adequate and the standard of food was excellent.

Overall the holiday was very good. The main plus was the staff, from Patrick the General Manager downwards, they were all exceptional.
Also exceptional was the weekly gala dinner. Many a top notch restaurant would be proud of the quality and presentation.
The overall quality of the drinks was good. I thought the Maipo Chilean wine was as good as any I have received in an All Inclusive.
Bedrooms and public rooms were all large, bright and airy with wonderful views.
No gym though. Never mind, you are on holiday.

My husband & I recently stayed for a week on our first Saga holiday at the Bel Jou. It would be hard to find fault with the service provided and the room was extremely comfortable with a beautiful view from the balcony of the garden and the town of Castries and the Caribbean Sea.
Our only comment would be that we felt considerably younger than the other guests and feel that it may not be the perfect choice for the lower end of the Saga age range.
Having said that, most people seemed to be having a wonderful time and perhaps we're just not quite ready for this kind of holiday yet.
A word of warning about the over-pushy airport porters who try to grab your suitcases and take them a few steps to the waiting Saga rep and then expect a tip.....carry them yourselves!

Room Tip: check the notice board for daily happenings

My wife and I stayed at the Bel Jou for a week in early March and were very surprised how good it was. This was our first saga holiday, so we were very nervous about what to expect. The hotel is very good and was extremely good value, food, rooms, pool area and restaurants are excellent. We got two free trips with our holiday these were certainly worth going on as they gave you an insight into other areas of St Lucia. We used the courtesy bus to go to Rodney bay and Pigeon Island which was very reliable. The best thing I can say about the hotel, is it is one of the friendliest hotels we have ever stayed at, despite us being the youngest people staying there we made several friends and had a good laugh everyday. Andy the Saga rep is very helpful and we recommend his beachwalk. We are sure to return to this hotel one day.

February is always a miserable month so some Caribbean sunshine was wonderful. This hotel has some drawbacks mainly the location .To be fair Saga do say in their brochure that it is situated up a steep hill. The hotel was very clean with comfortable bed rooms iron ironing boards binoculars umbrellas and safe. The food was good but would not rave about the desserts in fact the Black Forest gateau was like something from a low budget supermarket in the 1970s ice cream was a better option .The wines were Chilean and were as good as M&S Chilean range .The champagne was from Rheims not some cheap fizzy plonk. The evening entertainment varied but the Country and Western singer L.M.Stone was brilliant .It was a bit crowded round the pool area and the German habit of reserving sun beds early was evident even though this habit was frowned on .Andy the Saga rep.was excellent and Patrick the manager was always around. The owners of a house nearby had a dog which was a nuisance but other guests at other hotels on St Lucia complained too on Trip Advisor .Must go with the territory. The tree frogs which croaked in the evening were delightful.

We had not taken a package holiday for 17 years so were a little worried about being herded around. Well you only got "gathered up" if you wanted to be. The rep., Andy, did a lot more than any company could reasonably expect. He was brilliant at helping people meet friends and not be lonely as well as sorting out a fantastic range of days and trips out to meet very diverse attitudes. The hours he worked were extensive.
The food was exceptionally good with lots of choice - there was always something we liked - too much really - we put on a good 1/2 stone each and we were trying to cut down! This all inclusive holiday was really just that and very good value.
The rooms were very comfortable and spacious - cleaned impecably every day. Lots of hot water always on tap so they have obviously got over previous years problems.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at all levels. They were always smiling and happy and obviously enjoyed working there and this rubbed off on most guests who wanted to enjoy themselves. Particularly good atmosphere which made our stay a pleasure and a "real holiday".
The evening entertainment was very appropriate and exceptionally good.
One last comment - I have stayed in a lot of hotels where the Manager is a picture on the wall if you are lucky. Well this was not one of them . The General Manager, Patrick, could be seen every morning doing checks around the Hotel and was exceptionally good at meeting and helping his guests. His wife Victoria was also around a lot with a wonderful smile and cheery personality helping lots of the guest to feel their best.
In conclusion we will certainly go back as soon as we can get another holiday organised.
