Hotel l'Imperatrice
Ranked #4 of 8 Hotels in Fort-de-France
Reviewed March 17, 2012

We spent just one night at the Hotel l'Imperatrice before getting the ferry to Guadeloupe. It is a charming hotel – the building is full of colonial charm and other reviewers have said, it is quirky. Our room was small but well equipped and was spotlessly clean. The bed was very comfortable, high quality linen and the best we experienced in Martinique. Shower-room was tiny but spotless and very modern. Only downside was room size – I wouldn’t want to spend several days there because you had to keep stepping over your suitcases. The staff don't have much English but were extremely helpful at all times and very apologetic when our check in was delayed for 30 minutes.

Although the hotel is on a main street in Fort de France we had a quiet night. There is a balcony to sit out on and you can sleep with the air conditioning off, just catching the sea breeze. Breakfast was good - typically ‘continental’ but with lots of fruit – the dining room is a lovely room full of colonial furniture.

The location is great for taking in Fort de France and is walking distance from the ferry terminal, all the main attractions and restaurants. I am not sure what has gone wrong for other reviewers, but if you need to spend a night or two in Fort de France it would be hard to find a better place. I certainly wouldn't stay in Fort de France as a base to explore Martinique though - the traffic would drive me bonkers.

One note that i haven't seen elsewhere - taxis seem to be very expensive indeed, and public transport (the taxi collectivs) very hard fr the tourist to get a grip of.

Madam, thank you for your review, it helps us to improve our hotel. Now, we are refreshing the paintings, improving the bathrooms and in a while we will offer new spaces for our guests (business center and a 4th floor terrace to relax with the view on the park). We will also offer new amenities in the rooms. All the employees indeed don't speak english but 6 persons on our 11 employees speak english with one fluent. You can always find somebody here who can help you in english, and the others will do their best even if they don't speak english. We will try to plan english lessons for them to be able to meet the expectations of our international guests. We will be glad to welcome you again.

This was one of the quirkiest places I stayed during a month long Caribbean tour. I love quirky, but the fawlts knocked this down a notch. I used this as a base for a several day exploration of Martinique and will say I am glad I did. Fort de France is a shabbily gorgeous place...scenically the equal of New Orleans in terms of potential and similar in architecture. L'Imperatrice is set in an imposingly impressive white art nouveau meets the 1950's moderne building on the Savanne (the main park) and a ten minute walk to the catamaran terminal. It obviously underwent a massive rennovation with EU/French public funds a few years ago, but this is fading rapidly. I was given a room on the top floor with a perfect balcony looking over the Savanne and toward the old "Fort" and sea. The styling is colonial nouveau, the room smallish but very comfortable and the bathrooms nice but already fraying. TV is French only at poor reception. Internet worked well. I spent much time on the balcony, and the teak furniture is possibly not the best choice considering the exposure to weather. On the second night many of the rooms were used for an art exhibition as crowds wandered freely through the entire Hotel...several "visitors" managed to jiggle my locked door open and some were indignant when I indicated they leave (I was not exhibiting). I don't believe there was danger but it would have been nice to have been warned and possibly have the exhibition restricted to one floor or area of the Hotel. There just seemed to be a laissez faire attitude toward management and maintenance here, which is a shame give the amount of public money that has been recently dumped in and the fact that the Hotel seems to be a key aspect of reviving central Fort de France. The ground floor cafe is a good approximation of a Parisian bistro and the food is excellent. It was quite difficult to make a reservation and the inability to actually present competitive rates might be one reason they need to stage art exhibitions rather than just be a good city boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Balcony on the top floor...a nice refuge.

We chose this hotel for one nite after late nite flight before going onward. Loved the location and charm of this hotel located on the park in central FDF a block or two from the water. Wood floor room with 4 poster bed. We had a front room with balcony, got a little noisy in the morning from the street. But not that big a deal. Typical European breakfast of meats, cheeses, breads, etc. Helps if you can speak a little French. But that adds to the ambience. Would stay here again.

stayed here on two different dates in two different rooms....Rooms are clean, charming and so French West Indies....The bar is wonderful and has great atmosphere....Unfortunately, we did not eat at the restaurant but it looked beautiful....The hotel is in a very central location...across the street from a park with lots of great food vendors that do a sit down and serve business. The port is only a couple of blocks away...and one of the museums is down the street. There is a large supermarket just a few blocks away that has really yummy food and some excellent rums. The management is as helpful as can be...I will say that it helps to speak at least some French. Very few people speak English. Take Euros.....lots of them as many of the places we saw do not accept credit cards. Yes, the hotel does...The rooms are small but beautifully decorated. #42 has a huge bathroom with a hug tub....and a lovely balcony that goes around the whole front of the building...with a roof terrace down the hall. Both rooms that we stayed in were immaculate and also very French West Indies. It was like being in Paris in the 50's but with mangoes, papayas and bananas all around...We loved the hotel and would not hesitate to stay there again...The beds were very comfortable in both rooms....They do not have king beds however...The linens are good quality. Floors are wood. The rooms all have a flat screen TV if you like that sort of thing and speak French well...and the hotel has free WiFi...and the bar is a great place to watch the world go by, do your email, and have a Ti punch...the drink of Martinique...BTW, the ice cream in the park is delicious. All home made with some unusual flavors....

The hotel L'IMPERATRICE [www.limperatricehotel.fr] situated in the centre of town is an ideal place to stay. Recently renovated with assistance from European Union Funds, it has been restored to its former majestic self. Its exterior is imposing. The rooms are all elegant with fine mahogany four poster beds and furniture [had a view of the different rooms].Excellent lily white bed clothing. Bathroom clean and tidy with lily white fixtures. The complimentary breakfast is excellent consisting of a continental spead of croissants, baguettes, sliced bread for toasting; fruits melon, bananas etc, fruit juices, cheese, cold meats, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, hot milk. The breakfast is similar to what you would obtain in Paris [I am a regular visitor to Paris] . The food at the hotel is very good. Lots of special lunches and dinners are held at the hotel. The cafe style KIOSK owned by the hotel across the road in the Savane also serves mouth watering snacks and lunches. Cold fruit juices and sodas 2-3 euros per bottle, served with ice in plastic cup. Water is free by just asking at the bar in the hotel, even passers by enter to ask for a cup of water. The Hotel's Bar is a very cosy place to sit for a drink, chat or to use the internet. Chairs are also outside the hotel just as they are in Paris. Complimentary WiFi throughout the hotel. Very helpful and friendly staff - everyone goes out of their way to assist. Fort-de- France is going through a restoration and modernisation with the emphasis being now on Heritage and Cultural tourism in urban places, in addition to the customary Beach tourism -Sun sea, and sand. The sea wall and wide promenade along the sea front gives it a feel of Paris in the tropics. La Savane strip just infront of L'Imperatrice hotel is very impressive with the open air Kiosks. It stretches from the sea front all along rue de la Liberte to the end of la Savane [Central Park], selling delicious foods - full meals as well as snack and drinks. Hotels guests have a wide choice of foods both at the hotel and from L'Imperatrice kiosks as well as all the other kiosks just across the road. La Savane strip becomes alive in the evenings as locals and tourists come out to sit, eat and chill out in the open air [al fresco]. Security is evident as in Paris. Police vans and cars patrol constantly along rue de la Liberte. Police men are also on the beat walking up and down the Savane up to the promenade on the sea front. I particulaly looked for the type of security available aound this uban tourist area and in my estimation it was no different from what I normally observe in Paris. I felt safe sitting at the open air Kiosks eating Creole foods. The vicinity of L'Imperatrice Hotel is naturally beautiful because of the wide expanse of blue sea with beautiful pleasure boats - yachts - moored along the water's edge at the Malecon. Many persons go for walks along the sea front on the wide promenades along Boulevard Alfassa, others just sit on the many benches enjoying the sea breeze; la Savane [the public park] provides a wide green space in the centre of town, for hotel guests to go for a stroll early in the morning or just before sun down. Famous historical sites such as the Cathedral of Saint- Louis and the massive Fort Saint- Louis - a strategic fort on the sea front - are all a few minutes walk from the hotel; Schoelcher Library dismantled from Paris and brought to Fort-de-France is close by. The museum of archeology is a stone throw away from L'Imperatrice hotel [ website: www.limperatricehotel.fr]. [email: hotel.limperatrice@wanadoo.fr] [TEL: 05 96 63 06 82, Fax: 05 96 72 66 30]. I am very pleased with my stay at L'IMPERARICE and am enjoying it tremendously. It was very difficult for me to make contact with the L'Imperatrice hotel as there was no booking page under TripAdvisor or Expedia. I just took the chance and turned up at the hotel as tourists do in Paris and was welcomed. I cannot ask for a better stay and a better introduction to Martinique.

We stayed at L'Imperatrice for 2 nights when we'd just arrived in Martinique, before going on to explore other parts of the island. The location was good, the rooms small but very nice, and the service jovial. The adjoining bar was very quaint and nice, a pleasant place to sit and relax on a hot afternoon. We were in Fort-de-France during the Antillean Music Festival, and the hotel balcony was a PERFECT place to watch the parade go by! Our one complaint about L'Imperatrice was that over the weekend, the guy working at the hotel also ran the bar, and so it could be hard to catch him between customers and get our room key or ask a question.
