My wife and I stayed a week here for our honeymoon just recently. We love everything about it!! The prices are more than reasonable, especially considering the inflated rates at the W hotel where you would also be smothered by tons of other tourists. We preferred the more secluded and local feel...you get that here. You get paradise privacy while only being 10-15 minutes from a local town that doesn't reek of tourism.

Wanda is a big help by the way. Neither my wife or I can speak Spanish very well and we got into our room too late to want to frequent the market. So we decided to order in some food...not many places do this, however, and the one that did (Pizza) couldn't speak much English. Lol, so Wanda offered to order everything for us over the phone so we were able to eat!! Just awesome, a real big deal when you're starving and don't have any food. The pizza was awesome by the way....$27 (with tip) got us a Lg 2-topping + 1.75L soda, it lasted 3 days!!

The grounds are absolutely stunning...even one of our cab drivers remarked with a "wow" when she pulled into the grounds. The semi-private beach is amazing!! While anyone can technically enjoy this playa, most locals only frequent it on Sunday or from their car (scenic) off a small road that runs the edge of the grounds.

We also rented one of Wanda's Jeeps to check out the Biobay, Wildlife Refuge, a 375 year old tree, the bunkers, etc. and couldn't have been more please. We only wanted a vehicle for one day so this option was best for us (~$50 for the day). Just remember that there are only 2 gas stations on the island, and they close at 5 pm...so don't put off refueling.

One poster commented on the noise in the morning, and while he/she is not incorrect, it proved to be not as big of a deal for us. We stayed in the Media Luna, which is the upper suite that is closer to the road of the two two-tiered residences. On the first morning, yes we could here the large commercial trucks go by, and yes it was loud. But really, we were getting up early anyway (Sun has been up)...and the noise only lasted 20 minutes (in spurts) anyway, so if you chose to go back to sleep it was pretty easily done.

Again, nothing really negative to say about this place (the free kayaks were a bonus as well!)....when we return to this paradise we will most definitely be staying here again!!

We all had an amazing time at the Ababor Suites. Rooms were clean and updated only regret was we could not have stayed longer. We also stayed at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan during our vacation and everyone in my family including me wished we would have stayed longer in Vieques with Wanda instead of the Ritz. You wont be disappointed. Beautiful suites, wild horses, use of kayaks and relaxation with a Hammock on the pourch. I only hope it stays a hidden treasure because we are already planning our trip back next year. Take care and enjoy.

So much to praise about this lovely, personal set-up. We chose it for the lagoon out front so that we could relax about our younger kids enjoying the water without big waves or too-deep water. All five of us loved floating around in there several times a day. Wanda has wisely developed only a few suites on her pretty sizable grassy oceanfront lot, so you feel you have your own private beach, shared with only a family or two if the other rooms are booked as well. (On our third day another family did arrive, and we really enjoyed getting to know them while sharing the kayaks and surf boards Wanda makes available to guests, free of charge.)

As other reviewers have said, there's a Jeep on site to rent for a 24-hour-period ($55). We weren't sure if we would need it, but it quickly became clear that bikes would not be safe for us with the kids on the narrow rural roads. And we wanted a way to explore the island, not to mention bring groceries back for the kitchen. So we rented it for two different 24-hour periods and didn't regret it. Happily, we didn't need to worry about things like dish soap and spices because the kitchen was not only well-equipped with dishes (and a full stove/oven and microwave and toaster and counter space, etc.) but also basic non-perishable staples from prior guests.

As for the suite itself, we loved the paint colors, the tile floors, and the wood doors and porch railings. We ate often on the porch, used the BBQ in the roofed outdoor area, and availed ourselves of the mop and broom nearly every hour to keep the floors nice between all the beach time.

Finally, Hurricane Isaac was looming before we were supposed to leave, and on the same day we were checking whether and calling relatives on the mainland, Wanda contacted us and urged us to take the ferry off the island a day early to avoid getting stuck. Some proprietors would have capitalized on the circumstances, but Wanda initiated our safe return plans and credited our account for the last night we didn't spend there. Now that's good business!

All in all, this is a great choice for a family interested in relaxing in Vieques. It's not the W, but the W doesn't strike me as the real Vieques.

Room Tip: If you're in Caracas suite, you can fit 5 but really there's only one bedroom, so someone wi...

My rating is based on what I saw elsewhere on the island. This is the place to stay. It is on a nice empty stretch of beach. It is in the middle for nowhere. I would not plan to walk to anyplace from here. The rooms are very nice. Not fancy, but clean and neat. I drove all over the island while I was there, and most places were either not on the beach or the beach was really poor. This beach was beautiful and we snorkeled off it. There is a rock wall off the beach and a reef beyond that. The rock wall created a nice tide pool. Lots of small fish in it. I even saw a barracuda in it. I used water shoes to get over the rock wall to the reef. The only nicer place I saw was the W, but that is a big crowded resort which is not what we wanted. Wanda the owner/ manager was onsite and helpful. If I go back this is were I will stay.

We stayed at the apartment for 3 nights. The view was beautiful and the rooms (though very modest) were very neat and clean. The air conditioning was great in the bedroom but it was very hot in the living area and kitchen. This was a nice place to stay for the price though. This was a great location to watch the horses run along the beach. The Kayaks are also provided free of charge which was a plus for a relaxing stay.

The only down sides are that there were only 2 beach chairs available for use and no lounge chairs for the beach and there are no beach towels provided. This was a slight issue for us since there were 5 of us and we would have liked to lie out on the beach. The other downside is the first day construction work next door was very noisy very early in the morning and the garbage trucks way you up even earlier than that going by the apartment.

Overall I enjoyed my stay and the owner seems very helpful.

We had THE best time at Ababor! We stayed there for a few days' mini-moon after our wedding. Ababor was just what we wanted and more. Our self-catering apartment (Media Luna) was clean, well-equipped and had a beautiful wrap-around veranda where we ate our meals overlooking coconut trees and a gorgeous ocean view. The secluded beach was a wonder. The crystal clear water is protected by a reef. In places it's shallow enough to simply wade in and cool off when needed. You can also find deeper spots to swim about or head past the reef for deeper waters. The protected area is great for quiet kayaking. Again, head beyond the reef for more thrilling kayak adventures. Wanda, the owner, was off island when we were there, but she left Lionel Sanchez in charge...and he's a gem: friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The island of Vieques is beautiful and low-key, especially the town of Isabella II, which is about two miles down the road from Ababor. If you're looking for a resort where you'll be waited on hand and foot, Ababor is not for you. But if you're looking for a place that's magical. gorgeous, relaxing and makes you feel like you've just acquired a home in paradise, then Ababor is THE place to be in Vieques. We can't wait to go back!
