The Seagate hotel is a basic, clean hotel- a perfect spot for exploring the Island. They will also rent you a car. It has lovely grounds with beautiful tropic plants and a distant view of the sea. Penny is an animal lover, so there are dogs, cats and horses abound---which are very well mannered and add to the charm. We would stay here again. Penny went out of her way to be sure that we caught our flight back to the mainland as not to miss our Flight from San Juan.
Getting Vieques can be a little tricky- we took a cab from travel with padin then the ferry for under $100; then took a VAL flight back for just over $100. The flight was under 30 minutes, where the cab and ferry were over 2 hours. Each were unique in their own way.
One small drawback was the early morning animal noices- roosters etc. Again- its how you look at it- an annoyance or part of the ambiance.

Our flight from Boston to San Juan got delayed, so we missed our connection and had to take the last ferry to Vieques, which was also delayed. We arrived at the dock around 10PM in Vieques. Penny met us there, found an open restaurant, dropped us off and then came back to pick us up an hour later! The room was spacious and very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful! Stay in the captain's quarters if you have a few extra bucks....

This review is only for the horseback ride, as we stayed somewhere else but were recommended to Penny for the horseback tour.
When we first got there, Lawrence (one of the managers) talked to us while the horses were gretting ready. He gave us some great tips (and a little history of Vieques) about the island and was very friendly, a real gentleman.
The horseback ride only involved my wife, daughter and myself. We had two guides, one man and one younger boy (seemed about 16 and was training a young horse while with us... that kid can ride!!!). There was a language barrier to overcome with them, but they were so nice, that just gestures worked out perfectly. My wife was nervous the whole time (kinda scared of horses), which kept my daughter and I laughing. The horses were beautiful, the scenery amazing (and I do mean amazing), the route a little steep at times (which made it all the more fun). We went past a wedding on the beach, and the wedding party all waved to us, which was funny (everyone loves horses). Some parts of out tour were a little less desirable (we needed to go through a path by the island landfill to continue, but they need to dump their trash somewhere too). Once we went through the town and into the countryside and beach, we could really enjoy the beauty of Vieques. Afterward, we spoke to Penny and Lawrence for a while, and they were both very gratious.
I would recommend this tour, and my family enjoyed it very much.

Seagate served all our needs. Penny, Lawrence and the rest of the staff were always helpful and attentive, the setting is magical, the breakfast was delicious, and the room was clean and nicely decorated. We liked walking up and down the hill into Isabela II, and Penny rented us a vehicle for the last couple of days so we could get out to the beaches and to our boys' first snorkeling adventure. We'd stay there again.

My wife and I researched hotels in Vieques, PR for quite some time before settling on Sea Gate. While we regularly go to Puerto Rico, we had never been to Vieques island before. My wife and I stayed at Sea Gate for one night just after the New Year 2010 and it was great!

First, we ignored the information about taking a ferry from Fajardo and instead flew to Vieques out of the Ceiba Airport (JATA) in Ceiba. I highly recommend this if you are going to Vieques - it's only $40 a person round trip, an 8 minute flight and you get in nice and early to do things in Vieques. While not the easiest airport to find, it's small, easy/safe to park at, and the flights fly every hour.

When we arrived on Vieques, the airport taxi was easily able to take us to Sea Gate Hotel, which is in Isabel II, maybe 15 mins from the airport. We arrived about 10am and Penny was there to greet us with a smile. Since we were early we wanted to get out and do things, but our room was not ready. Penny however was very gracious and put my wife and I in a different room until ours was ready so we could leave our luggage and go out and explore the town.

Also, I recommend you have a rental car in Vieques - there is almost no public transportation. I was there a full 2 days and probably saw a taxi only one time. I mentioned this to Penny when we arrived and she promptly found us a car right there at the Sea Gate we could use for our entire stay. How great was that? We used it so much in fact, we forgot to fill the tank with gas when we were leaving and she had her staff take care of that too!

We got out to explore Vieques most of that day (the happening place is Esperanza) and when we finally got back to the Sea Gate, our room was all ready for us. We were in Room 6 on the top floor and all I can say is wow! It was fantastic! Great view, kitchen, balcony, lounge area, king size bed, satellite TV, A/C, the works! Way more than we expected in Vieques. And the view from up there is breathtaking... I noticed other reviewers mentioned the cats, dogs, and horses at the hotel - we almost didn't notice them at all from our balcony it was so secluded. If you go, definitely try to get one of the top floor rooms.

Penny also gave us the skinny on bio-bay tours, snorkeling and even the Three Kings Day celebration we happened to be there for. In all, it was a great trip and we got to see and do a lot, largely in part to our accommodations at Sea Gate. Thanks Penny!

This review is ONLY for horseback riding at Seagate, and not for the accommodations. (we stayed at EvaMer, which was wonderful). On our last day in Vieques, we went for a horseback ride at Seagate. The local guide, Ramon (?), got us on our horses WITHOUT offering us helmets, tightening the saddle, or adjusting the stirrups. The horses were also wet. About halfway through our ride (which was mostly on pavement), Ramon had us accelerate through an intersection, and my wife's saddle slipped off to the side. She was thrown to the pavement and suffered a concussion. She is currently in physical therapy for what looks like a long-term chronic injury. Ramon told me that they've previously had several accidents at the same intersection, resulting in several fractures (including a fractured skull). Bottom line: I believe that the guide, the hotel, or both were negligent in: not tightening the saddle or adjusting the stirrups on a wet, slippery-sided horse; not offering us helmets; and not re-routing the ride so that it did not go through an obviously dangerous intersection. RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

We stayed at Seagate for six nights over Christmas. Our hostess Penny was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Seagate for us provided a place to rest our heads at hight and shower up after our days @ the beaches of Vieques. Seagate is very clean, albeit, bare bones. It is a true Caribbean experience, insects and all. If you are looking for a 'resort' experience, look elsewhere. At Seagate you will get the true flavor of the Island.
