This review is ONLY for horseback riding at Seagate, and not for the accommodations. (we stayed at EvaMer, which was wonderful). On our last day in Vieques, we went for a horseback ride at Seagate. The local guide, Ramon (?), got us on our horses WITHOUT offering us helmets, tightening the saddle, or adjusting the stirrups. The horses were also wet. About halfway through our ride (which was mostly on pavement), Ramon had us accelerate through an intersection, and my wife's saddle slipped off to the side. She was thrown to the pavement and suffered a concussion. She is currently in physical therapy for what looks like a long-term chronic injury. Ramon told me that they've previously had several accidents at the same intersection, resulting in several fractures (including a fractured skull). Bottom line: I believe that the guide, the hotel, or both were negligent in: not tightening the saddle or adjusting the stirrups on a wet, slippery-sided horse; not offering us helmets; and not re-routing the ride so that it did not go through an obviously dangerous intersection. RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
