“Shiny Penny”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

Upon arrival, my wife and I felt welcomed right away. Penny is the owner and operator, and she made us fell right at home. We couldn't have been happier with the room. The deluxe suite had a great view and was very cozy. I'm from Texas so I enjoyed the horseback riding. Best horseback riding by far; Ruben was great. I would seriously go back just for the horseback riding. Penny and SeaGate are truly shiny pennies.

Room Tip: Get the deluxe suite.

Very clean and quite place. They give you what You Need for a comfortable stance. The only thing is that because they give horseback riding it's smell like horse poop around. Jejejeje. If you don't mind about that and some dogs around, like me, this is a place for you.

This place is awesome! If you are laid back, love the rustic experience, and totally love animals, then this is the place for you! My wonderful husband booked this hotel and got the "Hopeless Romantic Package" as a surprise birthday/honeymoon gift. (August 2012)

Penny the owner is very helpful and accomodating. She picked us up at the Ferry dock 6:30am and again dropped us off 2 days later in the early morning hours because my husband and I took the earliest Ferry time in and out of Vieques. We wish we could've stayed a little bit longer but we had the mainland to explore as well. When Penny took us to our room (Captain's Quarters) I wasn't expecting the gorgeous views, spacious room, and the fresh sea breeze that awaited us. The room was situated in the very top area of the hotel grounds with a private balcony and even more private setting. I felt like my husband and I were the only guests at the hotel. The bed was very comfortable, bathroom was very clean with towels and body wash provided, kitchenette was very well kept with cool sparkling champagne and Dove ice cream in the fridge provided as part of the package. Dining area was spot-clean and spacious as well. Large ceiling fans and powerful AC. And the balcony was our favorite spot where we stargazed the 2 nights we were there! We were lucky it wasn't a full moon that week so it was so easy to spot the Milky Way and the other star formations.

The package also included a rental car (4x4) which totally helped as we navigated the winding potholed roads of Vieques leading to the beaches and other wildlife areas on the island. Horseback-riding was among my favorite experience with my husband as we and another family toured the mountains and beaches in a 2hour period. Ruben, our guide, was very helpful the entire time showing us the different fruit trees growing around the island and some trivia and history of the place (in his native Spanish language which thankfully I was able to understand half the time) and even letting me ride my horse "Star" faster once we reached a ranch area.

Penny also booked us with a company for the BioBay tour which was also a very surreal experience. We never had any problems during our stay here. She was most helpful with directions and suggestions where we can go and eat and have a great time. She also suggested with check out Sol Food foodtruck which is located near Mosquito bay and we're thankful she did. Yummy food is all I can say! Complimentary breakfast that day were fruits from their own fruit trees, toast, jam, boiled eggs, cereals and milk, and orange juice and it was good enough for me. Plus we get to hang out with their friendly pets, with Fuzzy (chihuahua) standing out among the rest.

All in all, we had a great time in this place. Everything reminded me of how simple life can be and you still get to have a wonderful experience. Penny referred to us as the "Hopeless Romantics" per the package name and we couldn't agree more. With the mere 2 days that my husband and I were there, we felt just like it. We would definitely stay there again! Thanks Penny! ^_^

Room Tip: Book the "Hopeless Romantic" package. You will love it!!

Recently married, we decided to stay here for our honeymoon. We dealt with Lawrence at first, who picked us up from the airport as advertised and he showed us around the island. After arriving at the hotel we were offered a better room at the same rate (much cozier than the alternative, which was basically a hole in the wall with a bed). I'll start by mentioning that those not used to farm animals, dogs, cats, or animals in general should not be staying at places such as Puerto Rico or Vieques. They are mainstays and you need to look past it to have a good time. The Coquis and Roosters actually made the sleeping easier on some nights since the alternative was the obnoxiously loud air conditioning unit in the room.

In terms of the room and grounds everything was sufficient. The owner, Penny, was a different story altogether. The first day she was very welcoming although we spoke to her through the office door. After that it seemed a little more downhill. We both grew up in the country so we are used to "non-city" conditions and we had very few complaints. Coming to a tourist island, we sort of expected to be given advice on where to go and what to do and I think there was a misunderstanding as to how the stay would be. I read plenty of reviews that praised Penny's attentiveness and helpfulness but we didn't really experience it that way.

Notwithstanding the typical farm smells, the dogs that were present were ridden with fleas and ticks and we weren't sure which ones were hers or simply strays that had wandered in. We attempted to be friendly with them as we heard she was an animal lover but she certainly didn't present herself as such. The breakfasts were brought in every morning as promised but a few times my wife had to pull hair out of the bread and some mornings we had to walk into town because there was nothing but coffee out when we woke up (typically between 8:30-9:00 while breakfast was said to be served at 8:30).

Penny herself was pleasant to speak to unless she had business to attend to (which was often), in which case her attitude went from happy and perky to dismissive and flighty. There were times we weren't sure what to do and rather than suggest and make calls to connect us where we needed to be she gave us a list of things to do and left it up to us. That's great if you've been there before, know who to talk to, and know where to be. It's not so great if you don't know anyone, don't know who to trust, and aren't sure how to get around.

In addition to that, a taxi was called for us to take us to the beach but the driver randomly pulled over to get himself a snack and didn't speak to us - not only did this make us extremely uncomfortable, he didn't even take us to the right spot. We asked when he could come pick us up and he basically shrugged at as so we opted to call Penny instead (we were told by Lawrence to do so if we were in a situation). When we did call her, she made a slight stink about it and said we needed to learn how the taxis work here and that we need to tell them what time to pick us up and make our own arrangements. Rather than get us herself, she did call for another taxi to come get us. He was running late, so we ordered some food. He arrived about five or so minutes before our food was ready and waited for us but the experience of it was nerve-wracking for vacationers. On a day where we wanted to rent a car Penny gave us a number to someone she recommended but we had to arrange our own transport there and back and the owner didn't even answer the phone when we tried to call him. We ended up going with Maritza's rentals, who picked us up and dropped us off, and had a great experience driving ourselves instead of paying $10 a taxi to drive you 2 miles to the town.

If you're planning on traveling to Vieques here is my advice - rent your own car or stay in Esperanza if you're a beach-goer. It seems like the only real reason to go to Isabel Segunda is to catch the ferry to Fajardo on the mainland. All of the real beaches are on the Esperanza side unless you're staying at the resort.

Finally there was one situation in particular that really soured our stay and it had to do with business. Lawrence, who vanished for the remainder of our trip, had offered to take us to a restaurant so we could eat and there weren't any drivers available. He asked for $10 to cover gas and we were in the middle of getting ready when Ms. Penny asked me what our plans were. When she heard Lawrence was taking us she stormed off to speak with him. My wife and I walked over to the car to hear her haggling him for splitting the money and basically trying to get a cut of the $10. This was a little bit unnerving and embarrassing, especially when you consider the circumstances and that we couldn't get a ride otherwise. This continued for a bit until she noticed we were there and suddenly the story changed into "can't afford to have you so far away from the office it's busy". The restaurant was about 2 or so miles out and took five minutes to get to by car. Here in the U.S. it's basically a drive to the McDonald's. Not a very good impression to make if your business is hospitality.

On the day we left, Lawrence wasn't there (we don't know what happened with him) but Penny was taking a few of us to the airport to catch our flight. She had asked us to tip the cleaning crew for cleaning our room (they made the bed and emptied garbage, something we thought was pretty common for hotel staff to do), which made all of the people there feel pretty awkward. While we were leaving we passed another family walking up the road. When asked where they were going, they said to the SeaGate. Apparently she was supposed to pick the family up from the Ferry but had forgot. When the father mentioned this, she swore she sent them a message but none of us really cared for the details.

All in all, the horseback riding was excellent (Ruben is terrific) and the location is great. The hotel is currently under construction; the grounds are very peaceful and the view is great. I don't know what happened with Lawrence, but we can only assume he left for better pastures or took his own vacation. It's a shame, really, because from the reviews here we felt promised a better experience and ended up feeling as if we should have stayed elsewhere.

Room Tip: Don't rent the economy rooms. Rent the suite or the higher floors. They seem to have much more...

We were fortunate to find this beautiful hotel, and were lucky to be able to stay in their two-bedroom cottage. Perfect for our family, and it was fun to get up in the morning and make coffee in our kitchen while overlooking the ocean! The cottage was very quaint and clean, and we had a breathtaking view of the city and the water from the rooftop. Penny and Lawrence were excellent hosts, and made us feel very welcomed and at home. They were extremely helpful with activities we wanted to do, and helped us get a car and arrange a snorkel tour. They gave us great advice on what to see in the time we had there. I would definitely recommend this for families, or anyone who wants a great experience while visiting Vieques!

And cats, horses, iguanas, etc. We had a wonderful time at the SeaGate and would highly recommend it- unless you require the stark immaculate conditions that come with a high-end resort stay. This is not the place for uptight people who seek luxury. Penny the owner was the ultimate hostess and made us feel like we were family. We still miss Fuzzy, the chihuahua that came with our room. Because the hotel is up on the hill, the breezes were amazing, we didn't have any mosquitos, and we had a fabulous view out towards the ocean. The accommodations were very comfrortable, and we appreciated having the little kitchenette.

This is a beautiful hotel with the BEST BREAKFAST! Penny is so incredibly helpful and accomodating. She rented us her Jeep so we could get around the island. Thanks Penny! It was a beautiful room with great water pressure, comfy beds and it was lovely having a view of the ocean and horses outside our door. The dogs and cats are charming as well, and the location is great. It was a short walk down the hill into town and access to bars and restaurants. I can't recommend it enough and look forward to visiting again soon!

Room Tip: Higher floors have a better view of the ocean.
