“A five star gem disguised as a two star!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2012

We were only able to spend one night at this little jem due to travel constraints, but if we get back to Vieques we wouls spend much more time there. It is up a hill and a little difficult walking there, but not bad. They will pick you up at the airport or ferry terminal if you call. The rooms are delightfully decorated and have a wonderfdul veranda right outside with table and chairs. The rooms have a small fridge and they serve a nice continental breakfast. The staff will go way out of their way to hel in any way possible. We got in a day early with no reservation (it was the next night) and they called and found us a room and took us there!
Penny and her husband are fantastic and so is everyone else. A great place to kick back and relax, and easy to get to asny other place on the island with the Publicos. There was an island wide power failure the night we were there (which made the biobay adventure fantastic!), and when we returned they had a small generator lighting the entrance and office and had a candle burning in our room for us.

Penny, the owner of the hotel was very nice though a little bit forgetful, probably because of this busy period of the year. I has to called her theee to five times before everything is settled. We stayed there one night mainly for the biobay, which Penny booked it for us. She also helped us rent a scooter and lend us long pants (for riding a scooter). The room was neat and Penny was kind enough to let us stay in a larger room than we had paid for. There was a private kitchen and a small "courtyard" included in our room. However, make sure that you are animal friendly before you book the hotel. Penny keeps dogs, cats and horses (they are actually everywhere on Vieques). During the night of our stay, I slept ok but my boyfriend slept super well -_-. I was waken up by some roosters twice but the room was actually more than comfortable. You will have a great stay if you can sleep through all the noises made by he animals. The complementary breakfast was better than that I had been expectig. Penny has great Puerto Rican coffee and good homemade bread. Don't forget to try her bananas of possible!

We stayed in PR for 2 weeks, out of which we were in Vieques for only 2 nights. However, the place was timeless and we feel like we spent half our vacation there.

I knew that we were in for special treatment the minute I got a phone-call from Topher when I was waiting in line for the ferry at Fajardo. To our surprise, he said he was going to come pick us up straight from the terminal in Vieques. This eliminated a huge obstacle for us as we were renting a car and didn't know how we were going to move about with all our luggage.

Pros:
-------

+ Amazing people: Topher and Penny, you know how to make your guests feel special and take care of their every need. Not only did they help with our immediate reqmts on the property, they went out of their way to double-up as concierges. Topher got us a booking at the Mosquito bay tour though we couldn't find any availability when we called.

+ View and location: Surrounded by lush greenery and the breeze is out of the world. Vieques is very small, so you are close to most things by default, if you have a car. We never tried walking to the restaurants near the ferry, but I would assume they are about 15 min walk away.

+ Free breakfast: Cake, bread, eggs, orange juice, fruits

+ Pets: Many animals to play with, if you are an animal lover

+ Room: Very quaint rooms. Old feel and very comfortable. We were on the second floor and the common patio we shared with just a single other room was massive, with a hammock, beach seats, at least 3 couches, a chest full of books, etc.

Cons
-------

- Amenities: Don't expect regular hotel amenities while you are here. They don't have a pool or a gym, etc. You are in Vieques, so there's no need for these anyway.

- Parking: They were very cramped for space and we parked outside. But the road was narrow and getting the vehicle to Uturn was an effort

- Mosquitos: Even with precautions, there are bound to be mosquitos at night that will get you. This is part of the package for staying in a tropical hotel like seagate

Overall
---------
As you can see, the cons did not affect my 5-star rating of this hotel. If we ever come back to PR, we will be back in SeaGate without a doubt

Room Tip: Higher floors had a great view, great patio and great breeze.

My family and I wanted to ride horses during our visit to Vieques and Penny Miller made sure we had all we needed to have a great time. She was flexible about timing, the age of the riders (I wanyed my 2 yr old in front of me, which was fine), and lack of experience. I learned later she rescued or raised all of the horses on her property - and they were lovely (I saw 5 in action). Our guides Ruben and Ivan were generous and patient as we made our way past houses, farms, pastures, and even the beach (where we rode through the surf). Bottom lone- we had a fabulous time and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Wish we could go again soon.

The Sea Gate is a wonderfully authentic tropical paradise. Located on a hill to catch breezes and provide a beautiful view, it is within a short walk to town for groceries, shopping, or ferry rides. The suites are charming, clean and decorated with local art work.-Very comfortable and the balconies provide a relaxing place to spend time in the hammocks or lounge chairs. However the main reason I would strongly encourage anyone to stay here is the endless attention that is given to each individual guest to make their island stay easy and thoroughly enjoyable. What ever is needed, questioned, or dreamed of, Penny and Toffer will make every possible attempt to assist with. They are welcome rarities in this age of declining service quality.THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY ON VIEQUES.

Room Tip: higher rooms probably have a better view rooster do crow all the time - but you are Not in Kansas a...

Our second floor room was wonderful. Comfortable bed and relaxing balcony with beautiful views. Hotel is within walking distance to restaurants but definitely need a car to explore the island. We rented a vehicle from Penny, which I would only recommend if you have no other option. Our jeep wouldn't start when we went out to use it. Penny found us another one- it ran, but barely. Overall though this place is awesome and I highly recommend it.

Peggey - the owner, and Topher - the concierge - are simply the best. Ive stayed at B&Bs before and never felt this "at home". They helped us find a rental car, when we couldnt get one directly from any of the rental companies - I dont know how!! And They drove us around town till we got it [Its a small island, and the few rental cars there rent out quickly - so book ahead!]. They even showed us around!! We cant comment enough on how awesome these people are.

The room itself has views of the island and the old fort. Esperanza, the south side of the island is a nicer place for strolling around in the evening in my opinion, and all the nicer beaches are there as well - but you absolutely need a car to get around on this island, so living here worked out perfectly for us after all. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
