“Will always remember the Sea Gate Hotel!”
Reviewed April 23, 2011

My boyfriend and I saw this hotel listed in the Lonely Planet Guide. Although we really wanted to be near the beach, this hotel, located slightly up a hill, will never be forgotten. Now that I'm looking at the Sea Gate's website, it's pictures don't do justice to the charm and beauty of the place. It's owner, Penny, was more than willing to pick us up from the ferry. She greeted us warmly and personally showed us to our room. She has over a dozen rescued horses on her property, which overlooks the blue-green water and palm trees. The room she offered us was more beautiful than we expected for what we were paying. It was clean, pretty, cozy, and very spacious. It was decorated with unique artwork, had it's own kitchen and sitting area, and tons of windows. To boot, there was a balcony with tables, chairs and a hammock to swing lazily on. It had a slightly luxurious feel. We woke up to the sweet sounds of the breeze blowing through the trees, tweeting birds, the rooster, and horses. Before heading down to a lovely continental breakfast, we stopped to pet the horses, who were extremely friendly and curious. Penny made us feel welcomed and at home. She helped us organize scooter rentals and recommended activities on the island. We were only sorry we could only stay two days! We'd gladly go back to Vieques just to stay at the Sea Gate with Penny again. Thank you, Penny for helping us make our ferry on time back to Fajardo! We'll never forget you!

Room Tip: Ask for the third floor for the best views!

SeaGate Hotel is a difficult place to review. On one hand it is a fairly rough guest house, but on the other hand it's no more rough than the island itself. What I mean is this... Vieques is not a luxurious destination... it's a beautiful place full of difficulties, and in that sense, SeaGate fits right in.

For me when it comes to guest houses and hotels, quality of sleep is the most important factor. In that sense, SeaGate completely failed. The windows in our room didn't seal at all, so any outside noise (and between the roosters, the dogs, and the birds, there is plenty of it!) can be heard in full volume. Also the window coverings provided almost no blockage of light... so when the sun came up, the room was fully lit.

The next most important factor for me is service. I would say that the service at SeaGate was decent. Booking the room was extremely difficult. We tried numerous emails and phone calls to no avail. When our emails were responded to (a week later), the response was a generic form email that didn't address many of our questions. After managing to book the room via phone, our reservation was never confirmed, and our deposit never charged. The week before we left, we tried calling and emailing to confirm our reservation... again, no response.

Once we arrived, the service was fine... breakfast was good, and Penny and Irma did a good job of helping when we needed it. Our room was upgraded upon arrival, which was great! We were picked up and dropped off at the port on time without issue. Our rental vehicle wasn't available upon arrival, but was made available to us an hour or so later... it was low on gas, but Penny gave us some gas money.

The rental vehicle wasn't the prettiest thing, but it got us where we wanted to go! The room was fairly clean... but the day bed in the kitchen area was infested with tiny mites. Our balcony was very nice with a beautiful view.

Overall, I'd say SeaGate has plenty of upside and downside. If/when I return to Vieques, I'd look elsewhere... that being said, I wouldn't be surprised to not find anything better in that price range.

We loved our three days at Seagate. Penny and Ruben went far beyond just the expected and even came to pick us up in town after we went scuba diving with Black Beard Sports (another place I would HIGHLY RECOMEND--ask for Charlie to be your guide and instructor). Yes, the roosters were noisy and the horses smelled a bit, but Penny let us stay in the comfortable house and we felt so at home. The oceran views and breezes and the joy of driving one of her old cars made us imagine that we actually lived there and we loved it! Red Beach is a cozy, breath-taking secret and everyone on the island were so warm and helpful. The plane ride there was perfect and Penny met us and drove us back to the airport. All in all, we built so many warm memories here that you would never gain in a fancier hotel. The house was clean and we slept great despite the animal noises.

Room Tip: jUST ASK! Penny is wonderful

We've stayed at the Sea Gate five different times. To add to what other reviewers have noted, Penny Miller IS the Sea Gate. Over three decades of traveling, she is among a handful of unforgettable innkeepers I've encountered. She can arrange anything-- including, in our case, our wedding in the BioBay almost eight years ago. This is no mean feat, since nobody has been wed in this ecologically-protected area before or since. She helped arrange a myriad of hoops, so all we had to do was jump. But she won't be there forever. If you're going to Vieques, catch Penny and the Sea Gate while you can.

Penny and Lawrence are very helpful and nice. Rooms are clean and comfortable, however, it is not very quiet, if that is what you are looking for. Also, I wouldn't recommend renting a car from them (they have cars available on their property). The cars are old are not very reliable, and they are not always ready when you need them.

We loved this place. Penny, the owner, arranged for us to be picked up at the ferry dock, and supplied with a rental car on premise. She and her staff were above and beyond friendly and accommodating, down to a late check out time so we could enjoy the morning on the beaches.

The hotel sits high on a mountain with gorgeous views and the rooms are nicely appointed, as well as the patios. We had a kitchenette with a roomy sitting area and futon, and separate bedroom and large bathroom. Ideal. If lying in hammock with island breezes and a view of the Caribbean blue ocean is your idea of heaven, this is the spot for you. Penny also runs an animal friendly place and the hotel dogs made us feel right at home. She also has a stable of horses that can be rented. Without a doubt, we will go back..
