We have been visiting Vieques for 5 years now ( sometimes several times in the same year) and tried many restaurants in the Island. This last trip we tried Tin Box and we discovered a diamond in the rough. The tapas style side dishes gave us an opportunity to try a broad range of flavor profiles. From the "bad [--] bacon", jicama salad, Mac & cheese (with bacon of course!), roasted batata, to the mother butter loaded corn bread...to die for! They grow their own vegetables and spices right in their back yard. Last but not least, their friendly staff from the bartender to Max the oyster Mother shucker (and "plastic güiro musician") complemented the entire dining experience. A must try place!

We first heard of this restaurant when we drove past it during the day, then again saw some glowing reviews on Trip Advisor later that day, so we decided to check it out. The place is run by the same people which run Duffy's, which we also like, and had been open for only two weeks. When we got there it was pretty packed, and the ambiance was great. Luckily we got a table for two overlooking the bar. We had the [--] Bacon as a starter, which was so good we spent the rest of the trip trying to figure out whether we should come back and just order five of those as a main course. However, main courses were pretty mouthwatering too: we had the pulled pork and the bbq trio - I particularly liked the BBQ chicken and the pulled pork best. As in Duffy's, they have very decent craft beer selection, including beer from Old San Juan's Old Harbor brewery. Lastly, service was very friendly, and servers seemed to know the menu inside out.

to give you background, one of us worked at Bon Appetit for many years, and the other lived in RI, TX, and NC, so we feel qualified to talk food, esp shellfish and BBQ. This was the best meal we had in our week on Vieques. The owners were friendly and involved and we appreciated their advice on the menu. Our waitress was also friendly and attentive and knew the menu well. The atmosphere was relaxed. Dinner music was Sinatra, kept to a low level. We never had to struggle to hear each other - most definitely a plus! The restaurant is open-aired, and we were able to enjoy the full moon from our table. We started off the evening at the bar with three different drinks - the green bloodless Mary, the Box Mary, and the Box Rita. All were delicious, well-spiced and had the right amount of alcohol. The shellfish were fresh and of good variety - we tried the cherrystones, oysters, shrimp and lobster. I would've liked a wider variety of dipping sauces - the menu mentioned a mignionette but we were offered catsup with fresh horseradish, and lemon. The meats were tender; you can chose either Western or NC BBQ - the NC was an add-on sauce, not a rub, but had a good tang. There were two slices of brisket - a bit sparse. Overall portions were small so don't worry about ordering a shellfish platter to go with your entree - you should be able to finish both. We ended our meal with fresh berries and cream and were perfectly full. There is only one dessert choice, which turned out to be just what we wanted, but others may appreciate more variety. We left quite happy and full. This was our favorite meal of the week, and certainly not the most expensive. We recommend Tin Box with two thumbs up.

The Tin Box opened on Friday, March 8th, 2013. We went twice during our trip to visit the raw bar. Max, the on-site "mother shucker," provided great service as well as great conversation. This is the only raw bar on Vieques! We ate copious clams and oysters, and there was lobster and shrimp available as well. On our first visit, we brought in fresh conch meat from a conch we found on the beach (which a local helped us remove from the shell). We had no idea how to prepare it so we asked the chef Matt if he could help us out. He took it in the kitchen and 15 minutes later presented us with a beautifully plated conch ceviche, complete with organic arugula and tomatoes from the restaurant's garden. It was delicious!! We also enjoyed our "Bloodless Mary" cocktails, which contained blended herbs and pickled veggies from the garden. We had a great experience at The Tin Box and would recommend it highly! It's an especially nice change of pace from the bars on the malecon in Esparanza as there is more of a lounge feel here.

Yet another choice establishment founded by the family Duffy. The quality of the ribs and oysters found at this island outpost is nothing short of phenomenal. The microbrews are a nice surprise for us beer lovers. And the tropical open air atmosphere and island vibe tunes puts it over the top fun. Oh, and the moist cornbread has got to be the best ever anywhere. Nice job Mikey & crew!
