“What Luck we Found La Lanchita”
Reviewed November 15, 2011

We only spent one night on Vieques last March. We needed a room, and were surprised to find out that many of the guest houses do not allow children. Someone - I think at Island Adventures - recommended La Lanchita, and what a great tip! We felt like were visiting old friends, and we had never met Doug and Marikay before in our lives. It's so casual - Doug picked us up at the ferry terminal, took us "home" where we sat down in the office which is also part of their living quarters. We met the family dogs, all former Vieques strays now living the good life. We rented a vehicle, which refreshingly consisted of us giving Doug $55 dollars and him giving us the keys. They had towels, chairs, and boogie boards for borrowing - no signing out or deposits. Just take them and bring them back.

Our room was very nice, and the best part was the sound of the waves crashing on the beach just below. I slept better that night than I had in a long time. Our room would not have been ideal for a longer stay because we would have needed more cooking facilities, so I'd be interested to check out their other rooms.

Marikay drove us back to the ferry terminal the next morning. One of the dogs came along and spent the trip snuggling up with our kids in the back seat.

I stayed here for 1 night over the past Labor Day weekend. Although La Lanchita was not my first choice. I am very glad we stayed here. First of all, the island is very small. That means with a car any location is good. Even though i can't remember her name, our hostess was very welcoming. She gave us a ride to and from the airport. She made sure that we were on time to our flight. If i had more time, I would have stayed longer. The plane ride was expensive $200 RT per person but the views were beautiful. Casa La Lanchita is clean, quiet, and affordable. It is located in a residential area so there weren't any restaurants or stores to walk to. The car rental here was very convenient and I loved to hear the ocean in the morning.
We came to the Island for the Biobay. I was disappointed that the water didn't glow more. Maybe the moon was too bright. Don't forget your mosquito repellent. We enjoyed the beaches that Saturday especially since there were few people there. I went skinny dipping for the first time. I would return to Vieques to get a better look at the Biobay.

We have now stayed at La Lanchita two consecutive summers (2010 & 2011). I thought I had submitted a review earlier, but I guess it never went through. In any event, this place is as gorgeous as the other user-submitted images attest. I went in very large groups, so I got to see a lot of the rooms. They are very large and comfy rooms, air-conditioned, and overlooking the ocean. The owners (The McHouls) are very attentive hosts and eager to provide you with anything you might need. Another very helpful thing at La Lanchita - you don't need to bring your own beach chairs or coolers - you may borrow these at La Lanchita. The rental cars are nothing special, but they get the job done for the right price. While you will most likely need to have a car in Vieques, Vieques itself is a small island, so you won't spend much time in the car anyway. As for beaches, we liked Red Beach (aka Playa Caracas) so much we went both times. It is breathtaking. One last tip, if considering between ferrying and plane, ferrying is much cheaper but far less reliable. Flying there is a breeze and not too expensive.

Room Tip: Suite 10 is my favorite - it's in a nice corner overlooking the pool and the ocean, the bedroom...

We spent 3 amazing nights at Casa la Lanchita and hated to leave! Upon arrival we were greeted by Doug and his amazing rum punch but no matter how good it was it was nothing compared to the view from the balcony!! Our room was exactly what the pictures showed but what it couldn't show was the peaceful waves crashing on shore and the cool tropical breeze that blew through our windows all day long.... we never used our air conditioner (and I am a light weight when it comes to heat). Our rental car (conveniently provided on site) was cleaned, and gassed up ready to go. The reef in the water directly in front of Casa la Lanchita was huge. Full of different kinds of corals and fish. When you come plan to spend a day at home. We schedule ourselves too busy and had to squeeze in time to swim the reef and in the pool. We wish that we had stayed at least one more day where we just slept in, took a dip in the pool, ate breakfast down the road at Mamasongas, back for a snorkel tour of the reef, a nice nap, up in time to get ready for dinner (short walk down the road) at Barefoot Bistro, and then back for another dip in the pool... that will have to be the next time I guess.... I can't wait to get back!

Room Tip: We stayed in the suite room #12. Nice suite with private balcony.

Doug and MaryKay are great hosts, you feel immediatly more like visiting family then guests. The rooms are roomy with all the amenities you could ask for. At the end of a Hot day you can cool off in the pool and look over the edge right into the Atlantic just below. If you have never slept with the sound of waves this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: forget the TV and PC and enjoy the ocean view

We just loved every second we spent on Vieques. The hosts at lalanchita were great and they have everything you really need right at their place. We packed up early everyday and headed on our adventures to the beaches....but it was really nice to come back the the house and hear the ocean breeze and relax at the pool. The view is breath taking!!!! I loved driving to the town on the other side of the island....but Casa Lalanchita is also located in a small town, that offers everything you could need. This place is truly a catch......don't miss out! The owner picked us up at the airport and then we used their car for 2 days for a fee!! That was extremely convienient and for sure....the best deal around! We also went on the kayak of the biobay!

Try all the beaches.....each one is more spectacular and we are so glad that the hosts of casa lalanchita gave us all the information to get to them! We are looking forward to going back!

Casa La Lanchita is the best place to stay on Vieques:
This was our second trip to Casa la Lanchita and we can say that on a trip to Vieques we wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Doug and Marikay are great tour guides and were truly helpful at answering all of our questions.
On this trip we looked at the resort on the island to see why people were paying so much to stay there. It was very nice, but for the price you’re paying I think you miss out on the real Vieques. When you stay at the resort all you get is the same weather.
We loved it so much in Vieques that we looked at real estate and rentals this time. We decided it is the ocean breeze and the constant white noise of the waves which is what makes Vieques, Vieques. That being said, Casa La Lanchita is our choice as the place to stay whether you want to stay a few days or a few months.

How to decide if Casa La Lanchita is right for you:
As far as our vacation choices go, we like a nice place, but we’re not into fancy. If you need your bed turned down every night this is not the place for you.
It’s got everything you need (including air conditioning, which I’m ashamed to say I turned on twice on this stay because it was a little too hot to sleep.) It’s better with the air off though because La Lanchita is one of the few places you can stay where the sound of the wave’s slooshing on the beach can be heard from every room.

These rentals were like efficiency apartments. The kitchen area makes it possible to make your own meals when you choose. While it had a stove, we didn’t use it much, but the coffee maker and the full size fridge were very convenient. We bought some of the great bread at the bakery just down the street and some necessities from the grocery store in town. Many times though we stopped for food at the roadside stands on the island. Can’t wait for our next visit so we can have more pastelillos and rellenos de papa. The roadside food was yummy, authentic, and you couldn’t beat the price. We often ate a meal for two from the roadside stands for about $10.00.

Casa La Lanchita is one of the few family friendly guest houses on Vieques.
I especially appreciated the laundry facility on site which made it possible for us to pack light.
The heated pool was a nice option on the rare occasion when the weather was drizzly or for a quick dip in the early morning or at night.

What to do in Vieques:
Our normal day trips consisted of using a Casa La Lanchita cooler (there are different sizes available to borrow) packing drinks, homemade sandwiches, chips and bimbos (these are cookies; no need for raised eyebrows) and off to a beach.

We rented a Jeep from Casa La Lanchita. Yes, you can rent an SUV right at the guest house. You can rent vehicles from other places too, but we found renting from Casa La Lanchita to be easy and cost effective comparatively.

Casa La Lanchita has all of the beach necessities; coolers, beach chairs, towels, and boogie boards. We brought our own snorkel gear, but they also have some to use.

The snorkeling was amazing. The water world with its myriad colors was so beautiful. We saw so many varieties of fish I couldn’t even tell you. My husband most enjoyed the stingrays and turtles though.

The variety of beaches is fun. From prime snorkeling spots in calm waters with lots to see to areas where you can wade out for 50 yards or more and still only be in about three feet of water, to a beach with perfect waves for body surfing or boogie boarding. We even saw some surfers in front of Casa La Lanchita.

The beaches we were at had anywhere from no other people to probably less than fifty on over a mile stretch of sand. No crowds here.

The owners of Casa La Lanchita will inform you of many options of things to do and see. In our opinion, if you only do one thing in Vieques, go see Bioluminescent Bay. Captain Mark at Island Adventures really knows his stuff and the experience is beyond words. It’s a naturally occurring phenomenon that you need to see to believe. Just get there early and wear your bathing suit.

Driving on Vieques:
The narrow roads can seem scary at first but after awhile my husband became a pro. The topic of ‘Island Time,’ should be mentioned here. People are not in a hurry. It’s common for people to make a road impassable while they chat, cars driver’s side window to window. While frustrating at first it was liberating when I realized waiting like that didn’t matter because there were no clocks, no places to be . . . just ‘Island Time.’

Speaking of driving, the horses have the right of way whether grazing by themselves or being ridden on the streets. They roam free around the island along with dogs, cats, and chickens.

I hope this review is helpful if you’re deciding where to stay.
