Getting to Vieques is a fun start to your trip make sure you are on time for the ferry very punctual shame you can't travel on the top but overal ok trip.
The island is really what one would expect of and island that is not overdeveloped and overcrowded it still has the small town feel to it and that's great.
The beaches beautiful and natural bring food with you some are national parks and there only the beach and it is a woundeful experience.
Do get a ride from their taxis worth every penny and arrange your ride back they are very good.
overall I recommend Vieques if u want to really be untouched jwith nature and wonderful beaches if resorts are your thing then forget it stay in the big island but if u go u will not regret it.

Vieques. Good place, with nice beaches, but it's not for everyone. If you like 5 star accommodations, white table cloths, manicured golf courses, bumping discos, paved roads, I can't recommend it. The island is off the beaten path and not well developed (this is why I give it three marks). Picture the opposite of Cancun. The island has lots of horses, dogs, chickens, goats, etc running about and the roads are 3rd world. If you like to snorkel you get good coral and lots of fish where you don't have a lot of people. Many days there were no more than a dozen other people on the beach. There are many areas off limits. Still under clearing of unexploded munitions. The home rental situation was a mixed bag. The pictures of homes one sees on the internet are not true to what one finds there.

But the good thing was it took us to some of the nicest beaches!!! But getting there is a bumpy ride full of dust and pot holes. The only wildlife we saw where three horses alongside the road, but you can see that in town and all around the island. I expected more.

The beaches were great here. The roads were bumpy, but not as bad as I had expected. We had a two wheel drive Toyota Rave and had no problems. The beaches are marked pretty well. When you get to Vieques get a free map. They are in the airport and all over in town. As long as you have an idea where you want to go the signs are just fine. My favorite beaches in here are Red Beach (Playa Caracas) and Blue Beach (Playa La Chiva). The great thing is if one is too windy or crowded, just drive a bit to the next. You will definetly find one you love!

Be careful not to hit any wild horses but this place is self guided. You will find deserted beaches and some remarkable views!
