Great Escape
Ranked #16 of 28 Isla de Vieques B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 13, 2007

Me My wife and I were at the great escape for 3 nights (end of February 2007). We really weren't sure what to expect from Vieques or the Great Escape... We had a great time!!

We were thrown off a little when we first arrived and there was no one around except for another couple chilling by the pool. We asked where the office was so we could check in. They told us to just relax, grab a beer from the fridge, and Dana (the hostess) would be back. Dana arrived shortly and showed us to our room. She is very friendly and treated us like her own family the entire time. Dana is very helpful and welcoming. It was kind of sad leaving.

The room was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. The grounds of the Great Escape are very well planted with a wide varity of fruits, flowers, and palms.

Some on here say this place is way out of the way... We thought it was in the perfect location (assuming you have a car). a few minutes drive from Esparanza and a bit further to Isabella (Esparanza is a much better place to be) It is far enough from town to just listen to the quietness of the night, but a very easy drive to civilazation. . As you may have read in other reviews the driveway leading up to the great escape is pretty rough. Some make it sound like miles of rut filled 2 tracks. The road is actually only about 100 yards long and it really isn't that bad... especially compared to some of the roads to the beaches.

although we didn't go in the pool, it looked very clean and refreshing after a long day in the hot Vieques sun. There was another family there with kids and the kids seemed to love the pool.

The honor bar system is teriffic. Grab what you want, when you want and write it on the sheet. Dana will add it up at the end of your stay and add it to your bill... Beer, wine, liqour, well stocked. The daily breakfast was delicious. Eggs, fruit, bread, cereal, juice, coffee and other things. A perfect start to the day. I guess the fruits are picked right out of the back yard every morning.

The nights are very quiet. We actually got in little trouble the first night. Up late, tearing into the honor bar talking with the maintenance man and another couple (hi guys if you're reading this, we're glad we stayed :). We were apparently a bit loud. I really didn't think so. Sound must just travel in the quiet of Vieques.

In a nut-shell. If you are looking for a little bit of peace and quiet, a place to "reset your soul". Vieques is where you want to be. I would not hesitate to send my own mother to The Great Escape.

While on Vieques be sure to check out the Bio-Bay. Even on a full moon which they say is the worst. it's still amazing and un-like anything I have ever seen.
Media Luna beach was our favorite of the bunch :)

Happy Travels

Though I hate to parrot the reviews of the Great Escape by others, it is impossible. We spent a week there in March, and it and Vieques were everything we wanted and more. It is named quite appropriately, as it is a true respite in a quiet spot (OK, except for the morning announcements by local roosters) on a quiet island. A real find given its moderate rates. It is a beautifully and artistically designed, landscaped and maintained B&B. Its seemingly isolated location is in fact ideal, giving easy access to Esperanza and the roads leading to any location on the island. The hostess/proprietor Dana was warm, friendly and generous with her ‘extra’ time, taxi-ing us and other guests to nearby Esperanza, the ferry or other locations in Isabel, whenever a need arose. Chatting with Dana at the bountiful morning communal breakfast, and with the other guests to get ideas on prime beaches and sights, was a fun way to kick off each day. And, relaxing in or by the pool with Dana after a day spent out and about was great as well. The relative quietude at the Great Escape, no phones, no TVs, no loud AC units, just the breezy and cool tradewinds coming through the open windows, made it one of the most relaxing places we have ever been in the Caribbean. And the island itself? Just awesome….the relative lack of development from laidback Esperanza to funkier Isabel was a definite plus in our book. A different beach each day, each with its own unique characteristics, some busy, some isolated, some with waves breaking enough for body surfing, others placid, some with great snorkeling. A truly unique and unbelievable experience was the kayak trip on the bioluminescent under a clear ultra-starry sky. We spent evenings in restaurants in Esperanza and had great meals at Duffy’s, Bili, and El Quenepo, went to salsa night at Chez Shack, tripped over to Isabel for sunset drinks at Mar Azul, picked up some terrific local foods at a stand across from the Sun Bay entrance, with a final exquisite dinner at Carambola to close out the week. Vieques is a terrific island for a quiet, fun getaway, and the Great Escape is a true gem. But, please don’t go. We want it to stay that way so it never changes.

We went down for 6 nights in March 2007 and had the best time imaginable. As soon as you drive up the driveway to Great Escape, you know that every single review you've read is right on! We were incredibly impressed with the simplistic beauty of Great Escape, the beautiful plantings around it, and the great vista to the ocean in the distance. I was so happy to see the cleanliness and simplicity of the room- it was cleaned to a T every single day and despite a caribbean climate, we didn't see one spec of mold or mildew or one bug during our entire stay! The bed & mattress was also a pleasant surprise as it was very supportive and felt brand new.

The grounds at Great Escape are really fun to walk around- with all the unique plantings like cashew trees, mango trees, and grapefruit bushes. The pool was GREAT, and very clean. And, the best part was the inn is soo small, it feels like your own private estate.

Dana, the hostess, was incredible. She's one of the nicest ladies you'll meet out there, and she runs a tight ship. Everyone who stayed there when we were there was thrilled with her and the place. She won't hesitate to sit with you and really get to know you, providing great information about the island, her inn, and good restaurants to go to. Not to mention, her breakfasts at The Great Escape were great! Fresh fruit, great coffee, a nice selection of breads, cereal and scrambled eggs! We loved it!

Highlights of the trip include visiting every beach you can possibly see, doing the bio bay (we did it once with a tour and then rented a kayak from Fun Brothers overnight to do it ourselves- a GREAT experience) We rented wave runners from Fun Brothers 4 times and had a blast! We also got to spend some time speaking with locals, which was a great way to get a feel for the island. The only negative of our trip was with Penny from SeaGate Hotel. We had to cancel our horseback trip and she was extremely rude on the phone, not to mention I heard she was rude to another family too.

We ate at Duffys & Bananas- typical american cuisine, although I have to say Duffys' had the best bloody mary. We also really liked Blue Horizon and Tradewinds- great pina colada and great food! I heard from another couple that BBH was good too.

I hesitate to brag about my trip because I don't want Vieques to be overrun and changed, but I also want to let people know how great of a place it is! You will have a blast, and you will get what is so rare these days in searching for a sleepy, untouched caribbean island. Go, enjoy, and explore! And, stay at The Great Escape!

The place was very clean and kept up very well. The garden and grounds are kept beautiful.

Visit soon! Before Vieques becomes overrun with tourist and the prices go way up.

Perfect place for a quiet getaway, far enough from Esperanza to be tranquil, close enough to be convenient to town and the best beaches. Dana was a wonderful hostess. The room was large, tasteful and had a balcony with a view of the gardens and the ocean in the distance. Wonderful experience. Don't miss kayaking in the bio-luminescent bay! Amazing.

We stayed at the Great Escape the week of Feb 12th. We decided to try someplace a little different and had heard good things about the island and Trip Advisor seemed to have good things to say about the Great Escape. I will probably be repeating what others have said..but I will at least confirm what they seemed to have experienced.
The BB is in a central location, close to Esperanza, which I think is by far the better side of the island. It's quiet and has some great little bars and restaurants. I'll confirm that a four wheel drive is mandatory if you plan on heading out to the outlying beaches. Some of the dirt roads can be a bit dicey, including the short one up to The Great Escape.
Dana was very helpful on the phone, as we had made very last minute reservations, and she was just as helpful and accomodating in person. The B&B is on the top of a hill and has great views of the surrounding hills and the ocean in the distance. The room was spotless and well taken care of. There is a gathering place with tables and a bar for having breakfast and end of the day cocktail. It sits next to a nice pool and the area is a great place to wake up to and also great to sit at night, grab a beer out of the fridge(pay as you go) and look up at the stars.
A nice breakfast is included and Dana has put out a nice spread with eggs/fruit/juices/coffee. Having an area like this to spend time with other guests is a great way to pass on/garner information from others who have experienced Vieques. We had a great group of people who we seemed to run into just about everywhere. (It's a small island)
If you're looking for a small laid back and friendly B&B on a beautiful island that has yet to be fully developed,(thank god) give Dana a call at the Great Escape....well named.

We have just returned from 4 nights at the Great Escape B & B. From the daily luscious grapefruit plucked from a neighbor's tree, to our very comfortable and clean room, to our wrap-around balcony views of the Vieques hills and the ocean, we felt well served. Owner Dana has created a lovely retreat with decor that reflects her passion for whimsy. As we drove around the island, we appreciated the central location of her B & B, in a rural neighborhood that appears to be growing. Her 4 acres of planted fields insulated us from the rest of the world. We two 60-somethings enjoyed the company of our fellow travelers because of the intimate atmosphere of the place. During our stay, we visited the other B & B's in the Esperanza area and were convinced that Great Escape offers the best value by far.
