“Great little hotel”
Reviewed December 7, 2009

The rooms at Posada Vistamar are a little smaller than a college dorm room, but that's really all that you need. The rooms are air conditioned, and because they are so small, the rooms get cold pretty quickly. There is no TV, fridge, or microwave in the room, but there is a communal refridgerator and coffeemaker at the end of the hallway that all guests can use. The bathrooms are clean, and there was plenty of hot water when we showered at night; there wasn't any hot water in the morning (maybe they use a solar panel to heat the water?). We contacted the owners before leaving for our vacation for recommendations on BioBay tours and other must-see attractions, and were very happy with their recommendations. They also left maps and guidebooks for us in the room before we checked in, which were helpful in making other plans once on the island.

La Posada Vistamar is located in Esperanza, which is about a 15 minute cab ride from Isabel where the ferry comes in. It isn't really a problem getting a cab from the ferry to the hotel, or from the hotel back to the ferry, but a lot of cabs don't want to shuttle people from Esperanza. I would highly recommend renting a car, or bringing your rented car over from Fajardo.

The hotel is walking distance from the main "strip" in Esperanza, with restaurants open late even on a Monday night in November. There is a little bakery on the same street as the hotel with the best (and most reasonably priced) breakfast that we ate on Vieques. That is where the locals come to get their coffee and baked goods, so you know it must be good. Esperanza is right on the water, though the good beaches are a 10 minute or so drive away. I HIGHLY recommend the Red Beach.

Stayed over Labor Day weekend. We had two rooms and we were a party of 4. Our stay was short but perfect. The owner Lisa is extremely friendly and accommodating. The place is just what you need when you are spending the day at the beach and need a good nights rest. Beds are comfortable and air conditioning is each room are relaxing after a long day. Rooms are brightly and cheerfully decorated. For city people who are not used to roosters; you will be woken by them. Don't worry about it, you are in Vieques and things could be a lot worse! Walk to bakery and beach and town! Enjoy your trip!

I stayed at La Posada with two friends for six nights and we had a totally great experience! The owner, Lisa, was very nice about warning me when I booked over the phone that the rooms were quite small for three people (two twin beds are really all that fit, and we crammed in an extra cot), but on a student budget that was just fine for us! Everything was very clean and cheerful, and the bathroom was small but perfectly functional with a very decent shower. For eighty dollars a night for three people, I can't think of anywhere I would rather stay. The size of the room was completely unimportant, since we spent all day out exploring anyway. There is also a very pleasant roofed-in porch and garden, perfect for drinking your morning coffee or evening cervezas outside.

There was someone on the premises for a few hours every morning and afternoon to answer our questions or just have a chat, and even though La Posada Vistamar doesn't really have room service, they were happy to provide extra towels and sweep things out a bit when everything started to get unbearably sandy. Even when nobody was around, contact information was clearly available. We also loved having the outdoor communal refrigerator/microwave/coffee station. Although the free coffee certainly wasn't fancy, I think it saved my life a few times!

It's only a short walk of a few blocks to the beach and the main strip in Esperanza. Equally importantly, it's a much shorter early-morning stagger just down the street to the really great bakery for breakfast. The neighborhood (the whole town, really) is quite quiet and feels very safe, even late at night. It's true what everyone else has been saying about the roosters, but honestly chickens are inescapable almost everywhere on Vieques and after the first night they didn't even wake us up. If you're really concerned about rooster noise in the mornings then bring earplugs, but I personally didn't need them.

Overall, if you are looking for a friendly, no-frills place to stay, La Posada Vistamar is a comfy and charming option. I'm only sad that weren't there a week later, when the mangoes would have been ripe!

The hostess told us exactly were to go and eat, according to our interests... Very helpful if its the first time to Vieques. The place is exactly as in photos: ubicated in a neiborhood with roosters around, but this doesnt bother if your out having fun all day & night. At night its peaceful. They have a micro and big fridge... and gave us free coffee and popsicicles! Two minute walking distance to el Malecon: restaurants and little shops. Ideal place if you want to have fun outside and just come inside to bed, bath and beyond. Can keep lugadge in office until you're ready to leave!

The rooms are a great bargain if you're traveling solo or as a couple and don't mind losing sleep or wearing ear plugs. The roosters start crowing at ~4am and don't stop for hours - they roam freely in the neighboring yards and they are LOUD. The rooms are TINY, as in there's barely enough room to pass another person in a room with a full sized bed. We were traveling with one child who slept on a rickety fold-up cot next to the bed, making the room feel particularly miniscule. The rooms are colorful and set up with a random assortment of odds and ends, towels of different colors that look like linens I retired years ago. The photos you see online make it seem like there is a yard to look out over from the porch area in front of the rooms - DON'T believe it! If you'd like to sit out on the porch, have a drink and enjoy the view, you'll be staring at a fence <10 feet away from your chair. There is no view. Having said that, it is otherwise a cheap place to stay near the main drag. I'd recommend this to a college student or young couple travelling on a budget....only if they bring ear plugs.

We stayed at Posada Vistamar for one night in March, having read many favorable reviews on TripAdvisor.

Good things, first. The neighborhood is quaint, with roosters and dogs at every step. We've run into a few horses as well. The hotel is within a short walking distance to the main street and the beach. The accommodations are fairly minimalist but clean - no surprises there. Although we've paid $93.00 total, this rate was comparable to the rates at other places.

What put us off a bit right away was that there was no one on the premises to greet us, show us around, or address our concerns (e.g. a sheet of foam instead of a cot for our toddler son to sleep on). This was not really a big deal - we made do and a note was left to instruct us how to find our room keys. There were notices of a couple of numbers we could call if we had questions or concerns, but nobody in person that whole afternoon/evening.

This absence of any management on the premises contributed to the main reason for our negative review of this place. Namely, a valve on a water tank started to malfunction late in the evening, emitting a very loud spray and bang every couple of seconds. This banging went on all night, causing us to wake up several times and making it difficult to go back to sleep. Eventually, we were forced to be wide awake before the roosters began to crow (~ 4 am). In the middle of the night we tried the contact number listed on our reservation, but this only lead us to a voicemail box. Apparently none of the other guests that night were able to reach the management either. It was only late in the morning that we encountered the manager apologizing to other guests, promising that a plumber would arrive that day to address the problem, and reminding us all that we should have called some OTHER number to reach an actual person.

Ultimately, the room rate is a lot to pay for sparse accommodations and a lack of personal touch. We look forward to visiting Vieques again because it is beautiful and pleasantly laid back, but we will definitely not stay at Posada Vistamar again.

As the owner, I take this review seriously, but I would like to make future visitors aware that I provide an after hours emergency phone # in all rooms. I sleep with that phone next to my head, and only live one block away. If this guest had called me, instead of on the general reservation line, his problem would have been taken care of at once. Instead, I received his complaint at 8am when I opened the property and checked messages. It was then taken care of promptly.
I can only hope that if this family returns to Vieques they will stay a little longer and not be so hurried/harried and let me show them what a charming little place La Posada can be.

I stayed at La Posada for a week in December 08. Lisa the manager was friendly and helpful. It's a nice place, away from the busy main street and traffic. Small convenience store nearby. Only thing I didn't like was there's a lot of roosters in the neighborhood and I'm a late riser (unlike roosters).
