Been visiting Vieques for years and have stayed in numerous places, including Esperanza Inn when it was Ted's place. The transformation that the owners, J and Lisa have made are stunning. They have created a perfect balance between hominess and professional efficiency. Rooms are always clean and well appointed. Location is perfect for quick access to the beautiful Melacon and the 4th floor rooftop is a special place to watch a sunset/rise or simply stargaze. J's fishing charter business provides a nice compliment for those with the urge, he seldom comes back empty handed and fresh Mahi is not a bad supper. My wife and I both agree; the combination of mellow ambiance and friendly personality make it a very special place. Our last stay was 2 weeks long and it was much too short !!

Room Tip: If you like to cook the choose a room with a kitchen.

Let me count the ways we got so lucky finding the Esperanza Inn....great, funky, small place run by its owners, J and Lisa who are respectively experienced as a charter fishing boat captain and innkeeper. Close enough to "downtown" Esperanza for a stroll to dinner but somehow secluded with a sense of privacy. We extended our stay on either end so we enjoyed over two weeks in three different rooms. All clean, great a/c, island decor, large showers and, beach towels!!! The one bedroom apartment was especially nice for an insomniac's late night reading. The Inn offers a communal kitchen which we enjoyed for many of our evening meals. "If you can't find it, you did not really need it anyway!"

This trip was primarily a fly fishing trip for us. With J's secret map hints, a rental kayak from Fun Brothers (down the street) and a "want to go exploring?" Attitude, we had a blast. We caught four species on the fly....not huge numbers but some great fun....including one episode of screaming about drag that was too light!

The money we saved by cooking for ourselves went to fishing offshore with J twice, resulting in great stories and two new species for us! One is on the grill as I write this.

Esperanza Inn is also dedicated to helping Vieques' domestic pets who need their forever homes. We were priveleged to spend time with pup Allegra, take her for a few walks on the Malecon.

Many, many guests are repeat guests....we will be as well!

Thanks J and Lisa!!!!

Lisa and J, the owners and operators of the Esperanza Inn have thought of everything. There is a large communal kitchen, livingroom/tv area, 2 outdoor patio/seating areas with lots of furniture for everyone to have a place to sit and relax. There is an honour system minibar with water, soft drinks, beer and snacks and you pay for what you take by leaving your money in the jar. There is a nice continental breakfast with fruit, breads and muffins, an urn of coffee and hard boiled eggs, plus you can make meals and snacks if you don't feel like doing restaurants all the time. They provide guests with beach toys and chairs, lots of towels and are available for information on things to do an see. Really nice people running a great little guest house. The only downside is that there are roosters everywhere in the neighbourhood, and they crow all night. Not much anybody can do about that, though.

I stayed here for 3 nights with my mom and sister, and we had an amazing stay!! The inn is located on a quieter street, but still a very fast walk to the restaurants and bars, and to Sun Bay beach. We stayed in apartment 2, which was very cozy and nicely decorated. They have a great garden in the back where we had breakfast every day. It was also a nice place to sit and read during the one rainy morning we had. I enjoyed just spending time in the garden and relaxing. And they have beer, pop, and snacks for sale, which was super convenient.

They do have a lot of cats and a very adorable puppy. I am not a big cat lover, but the cats did not bother me whatsoever. They stay outside and keep to themselves, unless of course you want to play with them. It was nice sitting in the garden with all the animals wandering around. Horses would also stop by in the morning to eat the mangoes that had fallen from the tree by the house.

They do have a roof deck, but it is a bit bare. It had a nice view, but could be made a lot nicer by adding some plants and decorations. This of course did not detract from the stay, as their garden is a beautiful place to sit and relax.

Overall, this is a great place. Comfortable and well decorated, in a great location, and the owners were very helpful! I would definitely recommend it!

Esperanza Inn could be a great place. The owners need to spend more time on cleaning and decorating. People with pet allergies be warned. The owners have rescued about 10 cats and 1 small dog that live at the inn, mostly outside. The cats are house trained but dog is not. Cats own the outside furniture and have soiled them badly. Towels and bedding are mismatched and low quality. No hot water in kitchen. Kitchen glasses are mismatched and not much available (3 wine glasses ) My advice to them: take the pets home, and do a major cleaning, Remove window screens and wash them. Decorate the inside common area. I would recommend this Inn to people if these things are done. Other than that, the location is walking distance close to Esperanza shopping & food. Drive to beaches, they have ground floor and 2nd floor rooms, I would come back if the pets were gone.

Thanks to this guest for sharing his thoughts. I'm surprised however, since we hosted them for five days and heard nothing but happy comments. The children had a great time with the pets and I'm sure it only enhanced their visit. No, the eight week old abused foster puppy is not house trained. Eight weeks. Abused puppy. Please find some patience for her.
Our website clearly states that we work closely with the Humane Society and rescue animals. Why choose a property with animals if you don't like them? I'm terribly sorry to hear that you won't come back till the animals are gone because they aren't leaving. Also why stay for five nights if you're not happy? Future guests everywhere- Your innkeepers only want to please you and if there is something we can do to make your visit more comfortable we will leap at the chance to help. In this case we could have found other, more sterile accommodations. Let us know. Help us to help you, otherwise we are all disappointed in the end.
Thanks for including the photo of our cat Salma. It's great to see her, and I'm sure all of her fans will enjoy the pic.
The "cinderblock desk” was made by a local artist - Eddie Jolly - and we find it to be both attractive and useful for its purpose.
At count this morning, there were 11 mismatched wine glasses on the shelf. Everything is mismatched and will stay that way. Towels and linens are purchased in a department store. Mismatched yes, low quality no. We aren't going for the sterile hotel vibe. We want the Inn to feel like the laid back beach house that it is.
To sum up - we rescue animals and animals are on the property. For those of you with an open heart please come visit and enjoy. We can't wait to see you

I can't say enough good things about J & Lisa (& Brian!). We had such a wonderful experience at this inn - we arrived early and our room was ready anyway (thanks Brian!). We got tons of great advice from J & Lisa about places to go and how to get there. One morning our car wouldn't start and J was right there with jumper cables even though we had rented it elsewhere. The location can't be beat, within walking distance of the Malecon. The room had a constant, wonderful breeze and we never had to turn the AC on. The only complaint I have (and it's not even a complaint because it was a constant source of amusement for my friends and I) was the roosters. They are loud and they don't know when sunrise actually is. But it's a small price to pay to stay in paradise.
